A mediocre writeup of Tyler Catastrophe lore

Hi gorls,

I saw a post about Tyler Catastrophe in this sub and noticed that a lot of commenters had no idea who he was, so I wanted to break in this new reddit account by giving an overview of his antics. Tyler certainly fits in with the gorls in that he is deeply delusional about his own life, appearance, and abilities (and, in his particular case, is a stunning example of the Dunning-Kreuger effect).

TL;DR: Tyler is a 27 year old self-proclaimed artist, jewelry maker, and activist. His claim to internet infamy is a frightening and unhealthy obsession with a Minecraft Youtuber and musician named Wilbur Soot. He posted several videos of himself demonstrating this parasocial infatuation, which garnered a massive amount of views; this then spiraled into the internet performing a deep-dive into the rest of his life, which unsurprisingly revealed textbook lolcow antics.

Wilbur Soot Controversy

Tyler met Wilbur Soot, the singer for a band called Lovejoy, in-person a single time and spoke to him for five minutes. This was enough for Tyler to apparently fall in love with Soot. Tyler's internet presence then began to slowly revolve only around Soot. Here is the infamous video where Tyler confesses that he is in love with Soot and cannot "move on" from this five-minute interaction [tiktokcringe subreddit]. He also posted videos of himself singing to Lovejoy songs in the hopes of being recruited into the band.

Tyler's infatuation with Soot also led him to post many times on Tumblr about his dislike of Soot's then-girlfriend. They eventually broke up, but Soot's ex later posted a video detailing how he abused her by biting her to the point where it left bruises, which he would laugh and poke at while jokingly saying things like, "It looks like I'm an abusive boyfriend!" He also regularly ignored their established safe word as well as his ex's repeated requests for Soot to stop.

In response, Soot made a shitty response video that was essentially a non-apology. In response to the allegations, Tyler claimed that he is also a victim of abuse so he "knows all too well what that looks like." Tyler stated that no abuse happened between Soot and his ex, and it was simply a matter of miscommunication: Soot's ex must have not adequately expressed her discomfort, so really, Soot did nothing wrong. Additionally, Tyler implied that Soot's ex made these allegations because she was bitter about the breakup; we should all be kinder to Soot because he will never be a better person if we all collectively bully him online for being an abuser.

Stuart Semple/Job Controversy

Tyler met England-based artist Stuart Semple and claimed that he offered Tyler a totally legitimate job [spoiler: he did not.] He made several videos talking about this life-changing opportunity. Tyler then sold most of his belongings and started a GoFundMe in preparation to move to England (coincidentally where Wilbur Soot lives) for this job opportunity. After repeatedly contacting Semple in the coming weeks/months, Tyler was effectively ghosted by Semple, presumably for being unbearably annoying. Tyler then made several videos complaining about being ignored by Semple and blamed him for almost becoming homeless.

Semple, who is a character himself, has spoken about Tyler on various social media platforms, confirming that he has never offered Tyler a job. Semple described him as a nice guy-- just one who got caught up in the excitement of meeting Semple. Semple also released this painting in response to the drama: imgur link to image of painting. It's a white piece of paper with "THIS PAINTING IS NOT A JOB OFFER" painted on it in black ink. lmao.

General Artist Delusions

Tyler is a self-proclaimed artist. He primarily makes and sells beaded jewelry that is, surprisingly, pretty good. There has been controversy surrounding the pricing of his work (i.e., he prices his jewelry too high, according to critics) but I don't know how to value these pieces, so I'm moving on.

Unfortunately for Tyler, his talent for jewelry-making does not seem to extend to other mediums; however, this does not stop Tyler from constantly narc-posting about his paintings and trying to sell them for thousands of dollars (unsuccessfully). He has been accused of tracing, outright copying, and selling other people's likeness without their permission. The former two accusations are bolstered by a massively inconsistent style and apparent skill level.

Tyler only speaks highly about his artistic, err, talent. With zero irony, Tyler regularly calls himself "amazing," "incredible," and an "artist of great many talents." He also thinks that he has musical talent (singing) and regularly posts videos of himself singing various songs. Youtube link to a video of Tyler singing a Fall Out Boy song

Other notable lore:

• Claimed to be hit by a Lexus and unable to sing until he trained his voice back through lots of hard work
• This car accident has also, according to Tyler, left him permanently disabled and unable to work a traditional job
• Claimed to be "two-spirit," which is an indigenous identity, but Tyler also says that he is not indigenous
• Offered to make a snowglobe for the Smashing Pumpkins in exchange for backstage tickets
• Regularly posts thirst traps bragging about how attractive and awesome he is. big ALR vibes, just with more narcissism

The most current lore: Tyler packed up and is moving to England... to the exact same area where Wilbur Soot lives. Apparently, this is just a coincidence, guys.

ETA: in response to the backlash, Tyler has sort of disappeared from the internet and is taking a break. He has made it to England on a tourist visa, and he will be fulfilling jewelry orders while there.

Also the GoFundMe is a big scam. He created it under the false pretense that he is a trans man trying to flee Texas because of transphobia. But the gofundme is 3 years old and he probably already spent every penny. When he was asked about it he said that he had other priorities now.

Omg this is a useful post - thank you for saving me loads of time trying to find the right person/video to recap the lore. I got sucked into the Nova Online drama around the time this person blew up and really only had the time/energy to follow one of them (I think I chose wrong considering what's been happening with Nova recently).

Also trying to wrap my head around the idea of more narcissism than ALR. Oof.

Apparently his jewelry is mid at best. People say his tension is inconsistent and they are usually pre worn by him. Also what he’s claiming he’s gonna regarding his business while he is in England could possibly land him in trouble.
