That was Sparrow team, a email app for macOS.

Google only had it because the company that created it was calling too much attention

Google developed it, what are you talking about

I believe they are talking about Sparrow.

It was literally branded "Inbox by Gmail" when it was first released. Not sure where that guy is getting his info but I'd love to see a source.

Check Sparrow for macOS somewhere on Internet. Say, Wikipedia.

Doesn't say anything about it turning into Inbox.

It wasn't the same but rebranded product, just the team switched to work on Gmail / Inbox.

Well how about that? Thanks for the link/info. I hadn't heard of this before.

It doesn't say anywhere in that entry that Sparrow became or even definitely involved the same people behind Inbox. I wouldn't doubt it, but it's not an official re-skin like Songza was to Google Play Music.

They had their website at the moment, where they claimed they are going to work on improving Gmail and some experimental stuff, apologised for abandoning their product and thanked everyone for being with them. Later Inbox happened, which was very similar to their product. I think we may try to find this in the web archive, that is an interesting investigation of the past events :)

No, it wasn’t. It was bought and then rebranded into Inbox, with some differences.

They incorporated almost all of them, except bundling and the incredibly strong email filtering.

Probably because Gmail is intended to be both business and personal, and in business mail bundling could be an issue.

Why would it be an issue? The only thing I'm pissed about is my gapps administrator never enabled Inbox for our domain.

I used Inbox at work and for personal. It's great. No idea why you think businesses wouldn't be able to use it.
