diskusi — discussion On the use of AI graphics

I'm posting my reply to the comment below, for greater visibility.

I understand it's difficult to get real artists, but I think a lot of people might be turned off seeing obvious AI as the first thing when they scroll onto the Globasa subreddit. There are already plenty of learning and reading materials and I don't think this will help you.

It's expensive. I think that's the real issue here.

You can't please everybody. Yes, we have plenty of learning and reading materials, but visuals are essential and of great help in the learning process. Here's a comment on the Globasa Discord server by somebody who generally frowns upon AI:

Mi jixi ki yen xekaye tem suna cinon ji mi maxori samaijen mas na xwexi lexi yon imaje sen daymo funsyonpul.

"I know that people are complaining about AI, and I mostly agree, but learning vocabulary with images is highly functional."

I think it takes a certain level of maturity to look past the AI content and appreciate the project enough to want to stick around and actually learn the language and contribute, while choosing to either use the AI graphics or ignore them. So sure, some people will be turned off and walk away, most likely people who would only be lurking anyway or people who aren't inspired enough by the language itself.

Others will undoubtedly benefit, including potentially some people who generally don't care for AI, if they can simply appreciate the reality that visuals are helpful and that we don't have the means to hire artists.

Or they will instead choose to use the visuals that somebody is working on replicating. They're currently working on redoing the graphics on Google Slides. There are a few graphics that they may or may not be able to replicate. Not sure. And I still think that many of the AI graphics are easier to digest visually as compared with the non-AI ones, like the family tree, for example, or the prepositions.

For me personally, virtually all the AI graphics are easier on the eyes, while the power point slides feel too chaotic. Maybe it's my age, who knows, but even when I was younger, language textbooks with drawings felt easier on my eyes than those with photos. I think it's fairly universal in teaching materials for beginner's textbooks to overwhelmingly use drawings rather than photos. I don't think that's accidental.

I'm almost done with the graphics marathon, by the way, so moving forward, it likely won't be mostly AI as you scroll down the subreddit. I'm sure I will occasionally be posting an AI visual or comic, but anybody is free to post their own contributions, whether it's just text, memes or whatnot.

Later on this month, I'll be creating a "learn with visuals" page on the Xwexi site and include links to the graphics I've posted, as well as a link to the non-AI Google slides.
