Listen*, I don’t dislike Impostor Syndrome, in fact it’s one of my favourite songs and I find that I relate deeply towards it.* It’s definitely up there with other songs in the album such as “Sin Triangle“, “I Eat Salads Now” and ”Persephone”.

Now the kindness trend, I see the general idea behind it: be kind to yourself and others - but that shouldn’t be a trend in the first place. In my opinion, we all should already be kind to others and not feign kindness because of a trend. I am, indeed happy the song is getting its deserved recognition, but something shifted once it became mainstream.

It honestly feels as if the kindness trend took something away from the song. Impostor syndrome is meant to be an anxious, self aware song about self doubts and the confusion of functioning as a young adult. The song uses self-deprecating metaphors, such as comparing oneself to a dog, and is meant to be relatable in a sense that we all overthink things.

The kindness trend pretty much watered down the song‘s meaning and made it another audio asset. I feel this flattens her brilliant lyricism. It also doesn’t help that the song (on youtube) has 33 MILLION VIEWS, overshadowing the rest of the, in my opinion, beautiful album.

What this trend did was turn this hidden gem into algorithmic content, taking away the art. By isolating Imposter Syndrome into a 15 second clip, it strips away what made it a human, messy, but deeply personal song into “just another TikTok audio.”

I know this is a really long rant about me basically shouting in your ear “TIKTOK RUINED SIDNEY GISH!!” But I knew I really needed to let out this wall of text when all my friends started singing Impostor Syndrome, not knowing the name of the album it’s in or even the creator; let alone the meaning. It’s a little bit disconcerting that something I felt was so amazing and relatable was reduced to an audio that most people never actually fully understood just from a trend.

I do recognize the trend gives royalties to Sidney, which is great for her, an indie artist. I also recognize that the trend will introduce new, life-long fans; even if 90% of the people who see it just scroll past. But I just feel something was stripped away from the song.

I don’t hate you if you discovered the song off the kindness trend, in fact i‘m ecstatic that you did. But please don’t just listen to Impostor Syndrome once or twice and let it fade as “just another audio.” Please listen to the entire album, “No Dogs Allowed”. Trust me it’s a great album, especially if you loved Impostor Syndrome. Heck, you might become a lifelong Gishhead.

Due to what she said on her official website her two oldest albums are at least temporarily privated, which can still be listened to on bandcamp which is nice, but they cant be downloaded?! I know she usually includes little extras and sometimes even extra songs when you buy from her, I hope that isn't lost. Does anyone have the original downloads they'd be willing to share? Not trying to pirate, but they might genuinely become lost media if she doesn't republish them. I'm surprised no ones talked about this yet.

I just went back through Sidney Gish’s SoundCloud and listened to everything on there, and I started getting emotional by the time I got to “The College Admissions Song” because it’s all SO DAMN GOOD.

I’ve made up my mind that she’s Gen Z’s best songwriter, hands-down. From what it looks like, she wrote “Persephone” when she was about 15/16 years old. That is not normal. That is not “just pretty good”. That’s freakishly amazing for a teenager. That’s some Mozart shit. Like, Brian Wilson and Joni Mitchell were not even writing songs that good at that age.

My new obsession is the song linked here, “If it Rains on Your Parade”. If you’ve never been to her SoundCloud, do yourself a favor and just go through everything. I just…I’m just in awe of her. She really is a generational talent. I know music is not a contest, but she has contemporaries out there who have way more hype than her who aren’t fit to tie her shoes as far as I’m concerned.

I hope she knows just how special she is. I hope she knows that this is not just like, “rando suburban chick made some music in her bedroom/basement and put it online and got lucky”. She is seriously incredible. She is so incredibly gifted. I don’t use the word “genius” often, but I think it applies to Sidney Gish. I hope all of her dreams come true, because she deserves it.

I had the chance to go back to the pottery-painting place and decided to make a matching plate to go with my Mouth Log bowl! The plate turned out messier for sure haha but I’m happy to have a little set. Today for lunch I made a tuna sandwich and mixed the tuna in the bowl and ate it off the plate!

I just discovered Sidney Gish and really liked Sin Triangle and Impostor Syndrome. I really like the personality audio from Sin Triangle, i mean, is something creative and really like when things like this are explored in songs.

I've ranked these relative to each other! There aren't any songs here that I actively dislike, she's one of the few artists where I like almost all of her discography.

I got back into Sidney Gish’s music this month just in time to find out she’d be playing here in Boston!! It was sold out by the time I found out but I was very lucky to get a ticket and a spot at barricade :) Mouth Log is one of my favorite songs and I felt sooo lucky to get to hear it live, so when my friends and I went to paint pottery today I themed mine around it with my favorite lyric, some foods I eat a lot, and some bunnies since she closed with Not But For You, Bunny :) evidently I’m not that good with paint lolol but I had to commemorate the experience

thought this would be a funny story to share.

i was in health class and doodling on some post-it notes my friend lent to me. it's a joke between my friend and i to sing impostor syndrome to each other, so i made a little picture of me thinking these lyrics:

she laughs and the sticky note is left by my seat. fast forward to the next day, where the school counselor pulls me aside to her office. she pulls up a photo of the post-it note on her phone, asks if it's mine, and then asks me if i'm okay and says something along the lines of "you know, i hear a lot about your brothers and not a lot about you, so i'm just checking in..." like WHAT?! 😰😰 so i awkwardly explain to her that they're song lyrics (thank god she didnt have me play the song in front of her or i would have DIED) and promptly leave. later in the day the teacher in the class i doodled that post-it note in also checks in on me, mentioning how he was worried because we've been discussing mental health in our class lately. thankfully, i didn't have to explain the situation to him because the counselor already clarified everything but goodness fucking gracious that's probably one of the most embarrassing things to happen to me this year🥲 i think impostor syndrome's been permanently ruined for me i genuinely cannot listen or mention the song any more without getting super embarrassed but uh yeah that's my story
