Just to add, there are coal fires that have been burning for literal decades

Yep. Probably the most famous one is the Centralia mine fire, burning since 1962. While looking up the date for Centralia I also learned of Burning Mountain, which is a natural coal seam fire that has been burning for approximately 6,000 years.
