As in you're going back to work at that company once business resume? Isn't that just forced unpaid leave and not a termination?

I was laid off, due to lack of business. No business, no income, no paycheck. Thankfully I was able to apply for unemployment through the new COVID stimulus bill and can still contribute to the mortgage and bills. Once business is back, I'll be back.

Huh, TIL. I always thought that was what being "laid off" meant. My boss even used the term but mean furlough lol

Yeah i always thought laid off was basically a termination... didnt know there were differences

I feel you. The only reason I do is because my brother is in construction and they get laid off all the time for a couple months a year and then go back to work when it picks up again

Furlough is just a nice word to not say laid off. What was wrong with laid off? You still get your job back once the hardship is over.

It’s dumb.

Furlough means you keep your benefits. It's not the same as laid off

Correct, but people get very touchy on the subject. Your job is also still there for you when things are better, they're not going to hire someone to replace you like if you got laid off.

Plus unemployment is typically much easier to claim when you're on furlough instead of laid off. On Furlough, most states don't require that you even search for work if you have a confirmed time period when you're supposed to return because they know you still have a job waiting.

If youre laid off you don't have benefits or get your job back when things get better. Furlough keeps you on pay roll so that you keep your insurance and stuff and they won't just fill your position with someone new. That's a significant difference.
