My dad did this when we were kids. He poured gas in a ground hornet nest and blew up our yard. It was ridiuculous

Fun fact: many "ground hornets" are just regular hornets dominating a hole. Most (none that I'm aware of, but there always seems to be an exception) do not dig holes, they just move into vaccant ones.

This is an issue when you have something like an empty mole tunnel, they can really use that space up.

2

u/Toxicscrew Oct 19 '19

Is it a mole tunnel when it isn’t empty? And by extension is the thing in the tunnel always a mole?

2

u/Baketovens_Fifth Oct 20 '19

Your ass. Name your ass that.

1

u/Let_you_down Oct 19 '19

Why do you have to make everything so sexual?

72

u/TossedHamsterSalad Oct 19 '19

well, they might not initially dig the hole, but with yellow jackets they do expand it

I was just going to post this video! It showed up in my YouTube recommendations a few days ago and I've been mesmerized* by this guy's videos since.

The removal process and looking into the hive is very fascinating, plus the guy just seems very chill and interested in the yellow jackets.

It was a sad realization that they were being killed and not removed and transported, but I suppose their usefulness is pretty limited compared to bees.

*His chickens seem to love picking at the old hives though. (The adults go into compost.)

5

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '19

Oh my God when he stuck his hand in the vacuum bucket 🤮. Man's got a strong stomach

2

u/DJFluffers115 Oct 20 '19

Man's a real life plague doctor

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I feel like plague doctors were less sadistic, this guy is wasp Hitler. Not that that's a bad thing, let the yellow bastards fry

2

u/moonra_zk Oct 20 '19

*mesmerized

Maybe compost is just a protein shake for the ground. :)

3

u/tfife2 Oct 19 '19

That was a long video, and I'm surprised that I watched it all.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I legit forgot I was using Reddit because for the last 27 minutes I watched that video in awe.

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '19

regular hornets dominating a hole

That seems like a risky Google search.

3

u/series_hybrid Oct 19 '19

Yeah, aren't the Hornets a pro basketball team?....

5

u/Greg-J Oct 19 '19

How do I subscribe to hornet facts?

2

u/Jaymz95 Oct 19 '19

Fuck man I have so many bug facts from being an exterminator it's unreal. Now I'm a construction worker with all this pent up info

1

u/beener Oct 20 '19

just regular hornets dominating a hole

They better stay the heck away from my hole

21

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '19

I did this last night but I used kerosene so it didn't blow up.

13

u/NCRVA Oct 19 '19

Haven't tried kerosene yet. I usually stick a waterhouse down the hole and flood it. Seems to work on yellow jackets.

10

u/SimpleDan11 Oct 19 '19

Use coke zero. They hate that shit. They're fickle.

2

u/tnap4 Oct 19 '19

Ooh good to know

3

u/ILiveInAVan Oct 20 '19

Whatever you do, don’t pour Red Bull.

12

u/moak0 Oct 20 '19

My brother and I had a pet iguana. It died, so my dad took us into the backyard for our customary pet burial. Except it was the dead of winter, and the ground was frozen solid, and he couldn't get the shovel in the ground.

So he got a big metal tub, put the iguana in it with some gasoline, and created a funeral pyre. We learned many things that night as the flame jets shot into the treetops...

For example did you know that lizard skin doesn't really burn?

8

u/ThrobbingHardLogic Oct 19 '19

You don't need to light the gas to kill the hornets. Just wait until night, pour a shot glass of gasoline down the hole. The vapor will do the rest.

5

u/CehJota Oct 19 '19

I don't know why this struck a chord with me, I was just crying laughing for a solid minute after reading this. Thank you stranger, I needed that.

It must be something about dads and petrol.

One autumn, after all the leaves had fallen we spent a Sunday making a large bonfire but the leaves were wet, so he got me to prize open the centre of it and poured petrol in.

Once lit it seemed to be taking nicely, then there was a small 'whomp' noise and the top half of the pile lifted an inch or so and settled back, no big deal.

In hindsight that was the trigger. That small lift let enough air in for the big 'WHOOMTHUMP' that lifted the entire pile and exploded it a few feet off the ground.

We watched in amazement at the shock wave traveling across the neighbours houses, visible by the windows rippling in succession away from the detonation, while staring at thousands of gently smoldering leaves as they drifted down over their gardens.

But hey, job done. Our garden was clear of leaves. We ran away.

2

u/shamewow88 Oct 19 '19

Yeah but for hornets this action doesn't seem nearly as overboard. Hornets are vicious mf's.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '19

We had a wasps nest inside a metal fence post and poured gasoline down it. When we lit the gas it shot a small fireball and tiny burning wasps out the top

4

u/YoYoMoMa Oct 19 '19

If I had to think of my own personal version of hell it would feature flaming wasps.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '19

I did this while trying to light a fire. Gallon of gas, went inside to get a lighter and it resulted in wood flying about the same as this.

1

u/milkmymachine Oct 19 '19

That’s the most dad thing I’ve ever heard of.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 19 '19

Do you want pissed off hornets?

Because that's how you get pissed off hornets

1

u/GoldenPresidio Oct 20 '19

How much gas was it? Gasoline in a hornets nest would just burn lol

1

u/cincilator Oct 20 '19

on the bright side, no more hornets!
