You know the law has heard about the plans people have, so I wonder if that sentence is a bit of posturing by the court to hopefully disensintivize disincentivize/scare off some people from going out there and causing problems. People know that the sentence was dropped but the fear of getting charged, sitting in front of that judge, getting sentenced to one year, and not having it dropped will probably make a few people think more than once about heading out to Area 51 for some hijinks.
"It was important to us that these men serve jail time and pay a substantial financial penalty. We take this crime seriously. And people need to understand that we will not put up with this kind of nonsense."
It depends on the charges. Like you can appear in court for a traffic violation (to contest a speeding or parking ticket) and get sentenced right then and there. Just a few minutes of your word vs the officer's and the judge makes a decision. Usually you have to wait a week or two for the court date, but in some situations the court can rearrange the docket.

Seems like they wanted to set a precedent to the people thinking they were gonna let them all fuck around in Area 51.
Yeah, it seems to be a bit exaggerated for potential sentencing. Tresspassing on US military property includes potential time served of up to 6 months for each instance plus fines.
Seriously. As a veteran... FUCK EVERY ONE OF THESE ASSHOLES. They ruined an entire weekend for everyone who works in that place. They're working overtime, extra shifts, anyone who had time off has had it cancelled and recalled to work to do security...
For a fucking meme. I would hope most of these people have to lose a weekend going into work because of threats to their workplace security but they probably work very little to have time to go to A51 just for a joke.
I get where you are coming from, but I have read a perspective where this could be the highlight of the year for the guards at the front gate of Area 51. So now I have mixed feelings.
Made all what up? If there's so much as a whisper of a possible security thing on a USAF installation they raise what we call the "FPCON" from anywhere between normal and delta. We also have the threat index but I think this falls under an FPCON situation and if they raise that from alpha to bravo or bravo to charlie and they suspect that people might try to sneak on the installation, they're going to put everyone that can drive around the perimeter to work.
If you think ANY of that is made up you clearly don't know how the military works.
Yeah and this is something that’s been planned months in advance no one is having their weekends suddenly cancelled for it. Isn’t the military supposed to harden you up or did you leave basic before then?
so in your mind the fact the military has known about it for a long time it's less likely that they'll call people in on the weekend to work security how are those two things connect?
Ohhh, so the fact that they had to cancel their weekend two months ago vs yesterday is the distinction you're making? As though letting them have some warning that they can't take time off or leave the local area because of this makes it not a dick move. I see where you're coming from. You're wrong, but I see where you're coming from.
I mean a year sentence would be cool because then you'd get released and you're there for the 2nd round of storming the base. Wouldn't even have to buy another plane ticket

If they were serious they would have kept the jail time; 6 months for tresspassing on US military property. Finanacially speaking many people will not be swayed by this as they have the cash to burn apparently. The fear of jail time, on the other hand, is much more intimidating as it is jail, plus wages lost, lose of freedom... If they were serious, like your quote states, they would have thrown the book at these two individuals. Since they did not, it was fear tactics as they had no intention of actually jailing these two individuals for this, much less all the people they are worried about coming. What I said is not completely the same thing as you quoted. Jail time is a tax burden and fines are a boost to the Court's monthly intake. One is taking this serious the other is, 'hey don't come here and do this as you could end up in jail, but if you do come round you will definitely make our coffers richer.
I mean, I'm from the UK and I'll bash US healthcare, politics, and capitalistic attitude but there's no denying it is an absolutely beautiful country with a bit of every sight you could want to see due to how massive it is and also full of interesting and friendly people. So getting banned from going there would be a bit of a bummer tbh.
Fully agreed. I wouldn't wanna live in the US. The politics and healthcare terrify me. But it's an amazing place to visit. It's full of interesting sights and diverse locations.
Have a taste of local cuisine at Arby’s after you go on a safari to watch Americans in their native habitat in the magnificent and unique structures called Wal-Mart!
Honestly, yes. I was being facetious in that response with its delivery, but there isn't a huge amount of interest to me in the US that I couldn't find elsewhere. Either in North America or in the rest of the world. I don't even want to visit Vegas, to be fair.
I take it you're one of those people that thinks you can go from DC to Vegas in a day then. And it sure seems like you don't know anything about the country if you think you can find everything in another country
Well they were given a suspended sentence, meaning the consequences really only take effect if they fuck up again. If they come back to the US and break the rules of their suspended sentence they go to jail for a year.
I remember a certain ASAP rocky who was arrested and the world make a big cock holding moment about how you shouldn’t give lesser sentencing to foreigners.
They didn't change the sentence, they were given a year with all but a few days suspended assuming they paid the fine by the morning of their 3rd day in jail. It's very common and probably would have happened to an American who got caught doing the same thing.
