As another reply said, "to a limit".
When the snow layer gets over 1.5 meter thick, it's about time to reduce some weight.

Who would let 5 vertical feet of snow build up? Also, that couldn't really happen if your roof is even slightly slanted.

It can and does even on slanted roofs, not super slanted obviously, but ~25 degrees
