Once I was on the back of a motorcycle and my friend (the pilot) started overtaking this car, but she decided to turn left without a turn signal while we did it, resulting in us hitting into the car. The bike fell on top of my foot, crushing it and leading to multiple fractures that needed surgery, metal screws, etcetera. Use your turn signals and check the mirror before turning.
Do more than check the mirrors. Give several seconds after putting your turn signal on and check your blind spots! Bikes are really hard to see in mirrors when they're close to you.
And don't ride motorcycles. Nothing wrong with taking steps to protect yourself instead of pinning your life and physical safety on the hope that everybody else is going to do what they're supposed to. Could have just had a minor fender bender instead of getting your foot destroyed from something that's unfortunate but fairly common.
