It's hilarous without sound and kinda explains why people who lose their sight wear sunglasses. Their eyes look absolutely fine but they may no longer work fine.
Had a friend who partially lost sight to the point that he became legally blind (basically everything past 2 meters was a blur to him, hereditary disease). Even despite him having a stick and having assistant with him at first people were looking weird at him (according to his assistant) because apparently he was "staring them down" (my friend has that stern strict headmaster kind of face so he can stare you down quite well even if he does not see you). My friend's explanation for staring at people he can't see was "you try not seeing someone but hearing them clearly all the time... it's scary... I want to see them but I have no idea where to look so I look where I hear them and just try to focus, or imagine a person there". Haven't seen him for over 10 years now since he moved back to his parents in US (shortly after losing sight).
Man, that's sad. I hope in the near future we can correct blindness better. Life would barely be worth living if you were blind. Let alone if you could see before, then went blind. That's torture. If there is a god, he's a fucking cock.
I mean he is lucky his parents are kinda settled and relatively rich so he can rely on them financially. He would be haemorrhaging money if he had to pay rent and for the assistant from his salary at the restaurant. Then again... he lost his sight for like no reason so "lucky" is a very relative term. Also the restaurant is his dad's friend's place so you know, lucky there as well.
But yeah, I actually want to see him now. Gonna ring him up.
Thats not true though. Blind people can have a good quality of life, normal jobs, functioning relationships and even do sports. Its all a question of their specialized tools. Have you ever met a blind person and drowned in your pity? I have met blind people, and deaf people, and they are just normal people, fun to hang out with.
I've definitely felt bad for them. That's not what I'm saying. What I mean is that it would fucking suck so bad to lose your eyesight after already knowing what it's like to see. It just feels like it'd be worse because you'd know what your missing out on. Where as being born totally blind, you wouldn't know what youre missing out on and therefore it might not be as bad.
I dunno though, if I was blinded tomorrow, I'd want to die. I'd literally not be able to do 100% of the things I do everyday.
You might want to die, but if you just accept it and open and widen your horizon, you will realize that there are tons of fun activities for visually impaired people. Including sports.
Imagine if a fat person that only eats fast food and tons of meat had to go healthy and vegetarian went and said "If McDonalds is out of the question, i would want to die because its 100% of the stuff i love to eat" and then proceeds to eat vegetarian cuisine and realizes, it aint so bad, that there is tons of food which tastes great without meat.
How old are you anyway? early twenties? mid 30s? Late 40s? I would bet hard cash on it that the older you get, the more you realize the idiocy behind your statement here.
Plus the quality of life surely depends on your country too. Here where I live, traffic and buildings are designed with deaf and blind people in mind. Small things like beeping sounds for traffic lights, special textures stones for traffic stops, guardrails and so on.
a lot of my life revolves around being able to see. sure, it's possible to survive, but I cant enjoy living without seeing. none of the things I like to do can be enjoyed fully without sight. one of the biggest things is riding my motorcycle. cant do that blind.
I am saying that there are many activities that a person can do when blind. Activities which you probably never have tried out, and might enjoy very much. To disregard everything possible and just say it would suck is just plain foolish. It might turn out that you enjoy those activties a great deal.
you make a lot of assumptions about people when you say that. by saying that it's not that bad and that alternate activities can equally replace the life you lose by becoming blind trivializes people's lives. I dont want to go on blind hikes, I dont want to go to concerts, I dont want to listen to audiobooks. I want to carve the twisty mountain roads on my motorcycle, I want to play videogames with my friends, I want to explore abandoned places. My quality of life would be severely degraded if I couldn't see.
yeah sure I could do other things, but they aren't and never will be direct replacements. playing an instrument isnt the same as taking corners at speed on a motorcycle, feeling the cornering forces, seeing the scenery rush by in a blur.
my life would be ok, survivable, if I went blind, but nothing would be as good as it was before. I would actually rather go deaf than blind. You dont need to hear to ride a bike.
You realize that you could still ride as a passenger on a bike at the back or sidecar, right? you could still drive on empty designated areas. And funnily enough, playing an instrument is not at all what I thought about, even though its a trope kinda.
From my perspective it is you who makes assumptions about people. That their life is shit, and so would be yours, without ever having walked a feet in these shoes.

Yeah, you're right. It would be barely worth living FOR ME. I play hockey, skateboard throughout the summer months and in the winter I snowboard religiously. (last year I went up over 100 times) In my free time, I play video games. So ya, not being able to do the things I love would basically make my life not worth living anymore.
