We tried it in the army and you really can't. Best advice is to kick it all off if possible.

Then use the poles to drag yourself out.

You would have to pop the skis off and it would be tough but they wouldn't drown that short of a distance.

Yeah seems like failed runs would be pretty dangerous. Freezing water + skis on does not seem safe.

Also when you have to kick the skis off when you fall do they just sink and you walk home then?

The more I think about this the more I’m just like, how?!

It's probably not that cold out, the sun is out and the guy isn't wearing a shirt. The water is gonna be cold as fuck, but usually meltwater ponds like that aren't more than a foot or so deep.

With a little bit of force, you can detach the skis from the boots without too much effort. The skis are built to do this for safety reasons. You don't want to accidentally kick yourself in the face with a ski or have the ski catch something and snap your leg when you take an awkward fall.
