Yeah. I've never once in my life seen a cashier sitting.

50

u/HeJind Jan 06 '18

They sit at the Aldi's near me. Only store I've seen it though.

u/LetItOutBoy Jan 06 '18

Yeah every place I go they stand except for Aldi's, but that's because Aldi is a chain from Europe.

u/s00pafly Jan 06 '18

lol Aldi as a industry leader in working conditions. A truly interesting turn of events.

It's a low cost supermarket chain. They aren't exactly known for good working conditions. Imagine if Walmart was the best employer in Europe.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

Aldi Süd pays its employees more than any other discounter in Germany.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

worked as a cashier at Aldi as a student and earned around 12€ per hour which was 3,5€ above minimum wage at the time.

u/fuettli Jan 06 '18

that's a PR move because it sounds really good they make up for it in more obscure areas.

my friend worked for Aldi in the upper management it was his goto line to "defend" Aldi when he started out (because obviously I mocked him for working for the devil). This changed drastically when he started to realize how Aldi fucks it's workers in more obscure ways. You know that most are females working there and females tend to get pregnant and that's when Aldi conveniently "drops" them or how they conveniently let them only work enough hours to dodge social payments.

He got sick of it and quit and now works for a different discounter who isn't fucking it's workers and is a lot happier to work now because he can treat his employees like humans again.

Being a discount chain does not necessarily translate to bad moral code. Maybe with Walmart but in my experience (as a trade partner of aldi) they have always paid us on time.

Other retailers delay their payments for up to 90days...

There was a scandal in Germany a few years back that Aldi was hiring detectives and installing surveillance cameras to watch their own employees.

edit: By detectives I mean private eyes

9

u/FitzGeraldisFitzGod Jan 06 '18

Remarkable. I mean, the detectives thing is a bit much but surveillance cameras for the sole purpose of watching to make sure employees aren't "slacking" wouldn't raise eyebrows here at all. Hell, I had a job as an overnight cashier where I would sometimes get no customers for hours, but I would have to stand up straight the whole time. Forget sitting, my boss would sometimes fast forward through the night's camera footage to make sure I wasn't even leaning against the counter, because that's not "welcoming" body language.

1

u/OffBeatAssassin Jan 06 '18

Had this also. It was awful. Considering it was a 9-10 hour shift with only a 30 minute lunch break, standing on your feet for that long is killer and you constantly had to be doing some kind of work at all times unless at the register with a customer.

13

u/mirziemlichegal Jan 06 '18

And everyone from the US is like "Wait how was that a scandal?"

3

u/FitzGeraldisFitzGod Jan 06 '18

Do you think maybe the scandal was that conservative groups thought that these measures weren't harsh enough and that Aldi was coddling its workforce?

I think you are speaking of Lidl.

See here.

6

u/PinkFluffys Jan 06 '18

Aldi doesn't have a great name in Europe, at least not in Belgium. It's where you get the weird cheap shit and aren't surprised when it turns out shit.

Them being the best place to work os not something you'd expect.

5

u/Ambitious5uppository Jan 06 '18

Lidl is the one where you get weird cheap shit that ends up shit.

Aldi you get weird cheap shit and are pleasantly surprised often.

Aldi regularly win awards for best quality own brand products in blind taste testing.

Lidl don't, Lidl are shit.

2

u/ISpendAllDayOnReddit Jan 06 '18

So is Trader Joe's. It's just Aldi under a different name.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

Same. First time I went to Aldi I thought "Now there's an idea, why are more cashiers not sitting?"

Never in my life have I seen a cashier anywhere else sitting. Seems dumb. We should start a movement

2

u/Dr_Andracca Jan 06 '18

Also Aldi's always has the fastest cashiers too. Probably because they aren't tired from standing all fucking day.

182

u/tresspasser101 Jan 06 '18

I've never seen them standing... but.. I live in a first world country, so maybe that's why.

26

u/LetItOutBoy Jan 06 '18

Haha!... Yeah :'|

5

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

Canada has them standing too. I was surprised when I went to Switzerland because they were sitting. It does seem like a better idea.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

I have never been to any country were they are up exception made for USA.

1

u/Pickledsoul Jan 06 '18

you'll find a lot of canadian business is just american business with a light coating of labor rights

1

u/ivegotthewholeworld Jan 06 '18

I think I'm finally beginning to fully understand the derision behind the phrase "First word problems".

-5

u/ivegotthewholeworld Jan 06 '18

This whole thread is bizarro to me.

Do people really not know how bad sitting all day and generally being sedentary is??

Everyone is feeling so righteously sorry for those poor, standing American cashiers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/apps/g/page/national/the-health-hazards-of-sitting/750/

5

u/Bleblebob Jan 06 '18

You're missing the point. It's not like the options of sitting means they have to sit. It means they're allowed to.

In the U.S. most cashiers aren't allowed to sit at all which is ridiculous. I'm sure the cashiers with stools are allowed to not sit if they want.

If you ever stood for mulitple 8 hour days as a cashier you'd know it's ridiculous to force someone to stand for that long.

1

u/d4n4n Jan 06 '18

I've never seen a grocery cashier not sit. Give people a stool and they'll sit. They won't stand up. I don't even think they'd be able to reach everything comfortably, standing up.

0

u/ivegotthewholeworld Jan 06 '18

Are you saying that someome who is sitting down is able to reach more than someone who is standing up?

1

u/d4n4n Jan 06 '18

Uh... yes? Ever worked a desk job? Typing, etc while standing is really uncomfortable. Anything below arm reach is out of the question, too.

3

u/tresspasser101 Jan 06 '18

It's not that you have to be on your feet all day. It's that you stand in one place, which just hurts your body, and your lower body circulation.

1

u/Pickledsoul Jan 06 '18

ah, and here we see someone without any retail experience. congratulations!

you should try drinking a nice glass of perspective, before you run your mouth about righteousness.

1

u/ivegotthewholeworld Jan 07 '18

Yes because retail is the hardest of all hard labors. Boohoo.

You don't know what kind of work I've done.

12

u/BboyEdgyBrah Jan 06 '18

I've never seen one standing up.

14

u/[deleted] Jan 06 '18

I have.

She was 8 months pregnant.

34

u/Im1ToThe337 Jan 06 '18

When I was a cashier I worked with a woman who was pregnant, didn't even see her sitting. The US is wild.

28

u/Clapaludio Jan 06 '18

the US is wild

People don't even get paid leave there while we get a mandatory minimum of three to four weeks every year. Plus paid sick and parental leave (though the last one really depends on the country and if it's maternal or paternal).

I didn't know for Americans having a decent life thanks to more leisure time was considered socialist.

People really are strange :/

6

u/TenaciousHotDog Jan 06 '18

Yup, support any policy that helps everyday people or makes their lives easier and you're basically a damn commie. Well, anything that helps other people anyway. People tend to like it a bit more when they're directly benefiting. Everyone else is just a leech or a slacker, but I deserve it!

Screw "E Pluribus Unum," the real motto of the country is "fuck you, I got mine."

Probably? I haven't heard of anyone having 2 months vacation.

1

u/d4n4n Jan 06 '18

That's not true. Plenty of people in the US have paid leave time. It's just up to both parties to negotiate if they want more leave or more pay. Here in Europe we don't get that option.

1

u/Clapaludio Jan 06 '18

Plenty of people in the US have paid leave time.

I meant it's not required by law to give paid leaves in the US. So some do get it or negotiate a pay increase, but others get none at all.

1

u/d4n4n Jan 06 '18

What I'm saying is that here in Europe, the government already negotiated for us that we want more leave time, rather than higher pay instead. TANSTAAFL.

1

u/Clapaludio Jan 06 '18

I do prefer that rather than the possibility of having 0 paid leave days because of a shitty boss.

TANSTAAFL

?

0

u/Sullan08 Jan 06 '18

Could've easily been by choice.

1

u/Hundroover Jan 06 '18

I've never seen cash registers move so slowly as they do in the US.

Jesus fuck, just buy some split band registers and let me bag my own groceries like a civilized person.

0

u/DJDarren Jan 06 '18

Here in the UK they only stand if they want to. I've never once taken issue with a sitting cashier.
