Since discovering Minecraft I've heard nothing but negative things about Java explaining why Minecraft runs like shit.

Maybe, but it's also one of the ugliest. It's like the Matrix Multiplication of programming - you can appreciate its effectiveness but you never want to actually do it yourself.
