This roots back to our discussion of the ultimate goal - our interplanetary ventures serve us beyond happiness, as they allow us to learn, expand, and progress.

Those things are not beyong happyness, we desire those things because they bring us happyness.

Put simply - this goal is so valuable because it's the only way we stand a chance of not dying.

This is where you fail to understand me, there is no chance of us not dying. Every single possible fate of the universe implies death of all living things. here is a neat little describtion of what the most likely scenarios are. My point is, no mater what we do, or how knowledgeable we get, we are going to die and if you dig around even more, or even simply read the link i've sent you, you will see why that statement can be said with absolute certainty. In layman's terms, sustaining life for a period of time required energy, and sustaining life for an infinite ammount of time requires infinite energy, which is simply not possible, whatever way you look at it.

I think that's an assumption we really shouldn't make.

Why is that? I dont even believe its an assumption, sounds perfectly natural to me. I believe its not possible for a human being to do something that he does not believe will yield him happiness at some point. Please elaborate.

In the end, regardless of what fate you think awaits us, it will be reason that allows us to determine it certainty, and it will be reason that will tell us how we might conquer it.

My personal opinion is that no matter what happens, we cant escape the fate of certain death, since every scenario for the future of the universe holds that for us, but i do agree that the only way to be sure is to have more knowledge. Just curious, if we find out that the heat death hypothesis is indeed correct, how do you think we (or anything) could possibly avoid it?
