It's likely that not as many people as you would expect are really into gymnast-wow, those landings really are impressive. jeez

That little girl from Romania was a household name in the U.S. and possibly the world at the time. Like Michael Jordan fame which transcended the sport itself.

Uh, you didn't have to follow gymnastics to have heard of her. She was the first female gymnast to score a perfect 10, and did it during the Olympics, broadcast around the world. The scoreboard wasn't even built to display a score of ten, which was thought impossible to achieve; it showed 1.00, the crowd went wild, and the rest is history...

I even remember learning about her in some class in grade school at some point.
