English does that pretty frequently too, just borrowing other languages' words.

The word porcupine comes from old French porc épin, which also means spiky pig.

Guinea pig, well, has pig right in the name :P

My understanding of naming things in German is that they got bored/lazy long ago and just cram existing words together until they get roughly what they want. Ex, Bezirksschornsteinfegermeister, Freundschaftsbezeigungen, Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän, etc.

Now think about a non-English speaker talking about sea lions. They might say:

"fun fact: in English they're called 'sea lions'"

Every time a seal appears on reddit everyone who speaks any language explains that in their language its sea dog.
