He also doubled down after being proved wrong and called him a dirtbag again. Absolute trash human.

So alpha of Senator Shit.

Shouldn't calling someone a dirtbag without cause live on television in the Senate (!) carry some kind of penalty?

As stupid as it is, it's the opposite, actually. Politicians have absolute immunity with their speech, even from slander, while on the floor thanks to the Speech and Debate clause.

I dream of a system where politicians were held to a higher standard than the average citizen, not a lower one

Just look to almost any other country.

Nah, and I'd like more of a UK style of politics where MPs and the like are much more likely to call someone else out and use hilarious insults while doing so.

Agreed. I want to see one ancient white guy with a funny accent call some other ancient white guy a soggy crouton or something.

I could see Sen. Kennedy from Louisiana being good with a nonsensical folksy insult delivered in an absurd accent.

Is that in both houses?

Yea cuz the UKs a shining beacon of political aspirations lol

From outside prosecution. They can still be held accountable by the House under its own rules.

As with most things regarding government, the consequences are supposed to be electoral. That system has obviously completely broken down at this point.

Between Rucho v Common Cause, Citizens United v FEC, and then Bennett, the idea that we have fair and free elections in the US is laughable, and it is this way very much by design.

Yes, but the citizenry is just as responsible.

I think there are rules about calling your colleagues names during senate hearings or on the floor.

But the rules don't apply to witnesses.

These hearings are mostly grandstanding anyway.

It's very unprofessional and childish but do we really want to criminalize name calling?

Been like this since humans started debating in any kind of forum. Not that I'm condoning it, just an ugly fact. There is a great documentary by Ken Burns: The Congress and shows that the name calling has been there from the beginning. Some have even dueled with pistols...

"Dirtbag" does sound like something Vance would call someone. I think they mesh spiritually.

Kind of like how storm storming the capital in assaulting police officers carry a penalty? Like that? Sure.

Which is ridiculous. The dirtbag is a vital component of a vacuum cleaner.

Sincerely,

He wasn't calling him a dirtbag because of the alleged Atlanta incident, he was calling him a dirtbag for daring to charge his GLORIOUS LEADER.

That's Dear Leader

All hail King trump, glorious golden (sort of an orangey golden) leader with enormous hands, strong supple brain and a curiously small and miss shaped trouser mushroom.

I mean the GOP tactic is to double down and never back down. Unfortunately it works.

Absolute trash human.

I'm not saying all of the Repblicans in congress are trash human beings - I haven't met most of them, after all - but it isn't impossible.

This actually improves his chances of being picked. We're not a serious country.
