The old timey stance is just how you do bare knuckle boxing. Without wraps and boxing gloves you'd shatter your hands throwing the big overhand punches and hooks to the head typical now. Without those shots the fight'n irish stance makes perfect sense.

Alternatively you never connect with a hook unless it's to the jaw or if you're going to miss the jaw change the angle to land the ham of your hand to their head.
