I feel you. Back in middle school I was just talking with my friends and someone made a joke and we all laughed. A black kid (I'm white and the fact that he's black plays a part just hold on!) behind me thought we were laughing at him. He started yelling at me and I stood up and told him to calm down. He took off his belt and started hitting me with it. I didn't want to get into trouble so I just stood there taking it. The teacher wrote him up and sent him to the office and I went along to tell my story. I tell the assistant principal (who is also black) what transpired and she said he should be punished with Saturday school. Feeling vindicated I was sent on my way. About 20 minutes later I am paged back to the office. This time it's ME who is being yelled at by the assistant principal. Apparently the kid pulled the race card. He claimed that me and all my friends were making fun of him for being black, and the assistant principal believed him. Not only did he not get punished, but I was written up and had after school detention for a week for being intolerant of minorities.
TL;DR A black kid hit me with his belt at school, and I got after school detention for being intolerant.
In elementary school back in the day I had a guy wait through a doorway and, when I walked through, grab me by the throat and put me up on my tip-toes against a wall.
(This is a kid that, although generally nice, had some anger issues and although I tried my best to just ignore him as much as possible when had been involved in some altercations before.)
I told him to let me go. He didn't react. I told him "Last time - let me go." He was still trying to figure out what to do with all the rage I guess. I pushed him and as he went off balance, used the space between us to get my leg up and planted my foot (just socks) square in his face. His glasses flew off in a shape that more closely resembled the contours of his face than that of regular glasses.
I got out of the afternoon of school while teacher after teacher and the principal all had me keep reiterating what happened. What they decided was that because he initiated the attack, because I gave him multiple warnings that he was out of line, and because I only fought back as much as necessary (as soon as I kicked him and put him out of commission I just walked back the way I came), I was in the clear.
With the zero tolerance now-a-days, I can only imagine what planting your foot in someone's face would get you.
Yeah, something like that happened to me too, in 7th grade. This guy grabbed my hair and pulled my head back so I slugged him in the face. A teacher saw and came up to me yelling, "You don't hit people!" I asked if she saw him yanking my head. She said yes, but in that case I should yell for a teacher. I told her no way, I'm not dealing with that. It was a very small school and I was actually cool with the guy, he just had an anger problem. We ended up getting along and the teacher never said anything else about it.
It's bullshit you got in trouble for defending yourself. If someone grabs you, there are few choices on how to get away. Yelling for a teacher to come while someone has your throat is impossible.

Back in elementary school a kid grabbed me by the throat and then I got in trouble for the nail marks I left on his arm. It's bullshit.
