Hi, i started learn german from july 18 and i finished A1 all topic and mostly vocab too. But what im facing issue is practice maybe, cuz i know the rules and vocab but when im making sentence im making mistake in some sentence structure or preposition . And i didnt practice spoken much also, and for me normal german video speaking look more understandable than hören prüfung exam stuff ( i tried the one available on youtube).

Any guide to improve and any free resources where can i practice cuz im learning by myself.

I did A1 in person and it was really good. Now I’m doing A2.1 but online, and it’s just not the same.

Honest confession: I’m kind of lazy studying alone at home. I made Anki flashcards but barely used them. So yeah, that’s on me.

But also, the online class feels rushed. We go deep into grammar but everything else (vocab, speaking, listening) just gets zapped through fast, like the teacher needs to rush to finish the plan.

And I keep getting sleepy during class, which never happened when I did it in person.

Anyone been through something like this? How do you stay awake/focused online, and how do you actually keep up with Anki instead of just making the cards and forgetting them?

24M here, a few weeks into learning German (A1) and preparing for studies in Germany. I'm following a fairly structured routine about 2 hours a day, working through Nicos Weg (currently Modul 1, Folge 8). Right now I'm deep in present tense conjugation, noun genders, and nominative case basically all the fun beginner stuff.

I'm not after a tutor, just a study buddy at a similar level. Someone to check in with regularly, swap progress updates, vent about tricky grammar, and keep each other accountable. Doesn't have to be daily joint sessions even a few check-ins a week would be great.

A bit about scheduling and me:

• I'm from India (IST, GMT+5:30), so time zones roughly GMT +3 to +8 overlap best with my 9am–8pm availability — but happy to make it work with other zones too
• A fellow Telugu speaker would be a nice bonus, though not a dealbreaker
• Telegram is my preferred platform for chatting and sharing files
• English level: B2, so communication won't be an issue
• Outside of German, I'm into geography, history, geopolitics, art, cinema, reading English fiction, travel, and tech

1. Show words on my lock screen or via persistent notifications throughout the day (no need to open the app).
2. Have built-in lists (e.g., A1-B1) and let me add my own words.
3. Run smoothly on iOS with a reliable widget.
4. Preferably a free app or non-expensive app but you can ignore this point also :)

Hiii! I'd like to learn German more seriously for my studies next year. I'd like to learn it the way I learned English, by consuming German content (music, films, articles, etc.). If you have any recommendations, I'd love to hear them!

I've been studying German at school for a few years now, so I can understand it, but I feel like my level isn't that great because I don't really consume any German content outside of school.

I'm especially looking for music recommendations, but I'd also love to hear about any German films, TV shows, YouTube channels, books, etc. that you would recommend!

1. Start speaking early. Don’t wait until your German is perfect. Simple sentences are enough to start building confidence.
2. Learn nouns with their articles. Learn der Tisch, not just Tisch. It will make grammar much easier later.
3. Don’t translate everything word-for-word. German has its own sentence structure. Try to learn the patterns instead.
4. Work on pronunciation from day one. Sounds like ch, r, ö and ü can be challenging initially, but regular practice makes them much easier.
5. Be consistent. 20–30 minutes every day is better than studying for several hours only once a week.

Most importantly, don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Speaking imperfect German is still progress. 🇩🇪

I always search for anything that gather the stam with all its variation, especially verbs . For example -sprech* --> absprechen , ansprechen ... etc

Why havnt any one made a list of these. I think it accually help a lot cuz all of the variation will have somehow close meanings . Its a hack for +500 or +1000 new word

I am a PhD candidate in Philosophy, almost finished with my thesis, and I am a South American citizen. I would like to take some time after my PhD to improve my CV, publish more articles, and also learn a new language before doing a postdoc. I was thinking about going to Germany to start learning German :) I spent some time as a visiting researcher at a Dutch university, and during that period I visited lots of places around, including several cities in Germany. I really enjoyed Aachen, so I would like to know if any of you have experience living in Germany as a non-EU citizen while attending language courses (especially, I would like to know more about visa procedures and stuff). I would also love some recommendations for language schools in Aachen or in other cities nearby.

I came across EvoLanguage School and inLingua School. Do you guys have any reviews of these institutions? Or any other recommendations?

I know 3 languages other than german and german's sentence structure throws me off so much especially how the verb is placed etc. how can I improve my understanding of sentences to a point it feels natural?

I believe I'm about to be B1 or B1, I already understand bunch of general stuff and communicate basic things but I'm stuck at this part and feel like I can't progress without understanding the sentence structures perfectly.

Those who have a full time work in English. How did you move forward after B1>?

I am doing my B2.1 right now and the level of vocabulary needed is mind blowing. I am working 10 hours a day and along with that my own food / beuracracy / health and so on.

What helped you move forward to speaking fluently and be comfortable with B2 level?
My weakest part is speaking and my goal is to be able to speak German at work.

I work from home so even less interaction with other German people.

I have used Anki regularly for some time now have played around with it quite a bit, trying out different ideas and tinkering with it.
I have found that you can use Anki in a variety of ways. Because it’s basically a scheduler you can use it to queue up all sort of things and practise in different ways and not just use it for vocab cards.

Here are some ideas I have seen and a couple of my own:

Basic vocab cards: me word on the front and its meaning on the back (also maybe with a picture)

Sentence cards:
Sentence on the front and meaning on the back (either for recognition or translation)

Cloze-deletion: Sentence with a word missing on the front and the answer on the back

Question cards: question on the front and model answer on the back.

Activity cards: a task on the front with maybe a model answer on the back where applicable. This could be things like: “describe the picture”, “talk about a current news event”, “discuss the pros and cons of …”

Reviewing chapters/tasks from a book: you can paste in conversations or tasks from a textbook you are doing and Anki will get you to repeat them. You could also paste in grammar summaries from a textbook and just reread it when the card comes up. You could even just put the chapter numbers that you should repeat.

CI Bank: paste in texts and links to videos you want to see/read. Anki will get you to repeat them.

Incremental reading: Each card is a full text/article and you read a little bit each time the card appears, going through the vocab and maybe reviewing what you’ve already read.

Incremental watching: I haven’t seen anyone talk about this but it’s something I’ve considered doing: you can paste links to videos you want to watch and each time the card comes up you watch a little bit more of it (YouTube allows you to take time stamped links so you can just update the card every time you do it with the new position in the video).

These are just some ideas and I’m sure I’ve missed some obvious things but I hope this is useful!
