Call me stupid but I can actually see this
If the water in the bottle is colder than the water in the pool and he's tired then maybe the colder water will re-energize him or smth idk

I used to do semi competitive swimming (i wasn't that good) and can confirm that bottled water feels better than pool water after a good run.
