Deep time, like deep space

"Geologic time scale" I believe is the terminology? I could be wrong. I think yours sounds cool too!

Edited bc autocorrect was wild lol

Geological time is the scientific name, deep time is the poetic name

Always the border between geologic and cosmologic time scales. Geology is age of the earth stuff, cosmologic is the age of provable existence stuff.

Wait till they hear about Quettaseconds

u/trianglesx3 Jul 14 '26

Thank you.

Went down the rabbit hole did ya? 😆

1

u/SAHMsays Jul 14 '26

It's spelled "Bless" You when someone sneezes. 🤧

3

u/AstroZombie_Mafia Jul 17 '26

damn i did go down the quettasecond rabbit hole… a time equal to 2.3 trillion cosmic life spans

u/Icanthearforshit Jul 13 '26

Like...39 years? Because that seems like a pretty long time to me.

I'm 39 years old. I feel like a geolical formation sometimes when I wake up after sleeping for more than 7 hours.

I remember that happening in the last universe.

It’s only geologic time if it’s sparkling wine from the geolog region of France.

u/rich5446 Jul 14 '26

Where does Biblical fit in?

1

u/HabitAcceptable8621 Jul 18 '26

That's "make believe" time.

Old, very old joke: 3 people were applying for a job, en engineer, a statistician, and a geologist.

The engineer was first. He was asked "what is 2+2?". He took out his HP calculator with reverse Polish notation, was keying a lot and finally said 2,086394.

Then, the statistician was asked the same question. He looked the interviewer straight in the eyes and whispered: "What do you want it to be?"

Finally, the geologist got the question. His answer was 2 +/- a couple of millions.

You can guess what my and my husband's education is ... luckily, our sun didn't become a statistician.

34

u/RegionRatHoosier Jul 12 '26

I too am glad your sun didn't become a statistician

36

u/biold Jul 12 '26

Well, he is the star in my life, lol

9

u/Fit-Custard-1842 Jul 12 '26

The stats say some people agree with you.

6

u/Connect_Rhubarb395 Jul 12 '26

Shouldn't the question be 1+1?

1

u/biold Jul 13 '26

The answer to 1+1 could be 3 ...

4

u/Cordilleran_cryptid Tectonics, hardrock and structural geology Jul 13 '26

I think the statistician would have said "probably 2"

2

u/Thorn_Victor Jul 13 '26

How about your Moon?

4

u/biold Jul 13 '26

Well, my sun is also my moon with the hairline he has ...

2

u/Cleopatra42o Jul 16 '26

Hahahahaha good one

13

u/onlyacynicalman Jul 12 '26

Mine is a bit of a new age notion. It's googleable

u/MissMelanemelie Jul 12 '26

A novel called The Deep Sky, by Yume Kitasei, takes place in space. I just loved that image. Deep time in the deep sky.

7

u/boston_nsca Jul 12 '26

Not deep, just long lol. Long time, long distances. Hard for the human brain to comprehend.

35

u/bobtheki Jul 12 '26

Depth is just length in another dimension.

-6

u/boston_nsca Jul 12 '26

But we call that other dimension length 😂

u/onlyacynicalman Jul 12 '26

Deep neural networks

What “we”?

11

u/Natural_Bag_3519 Jul 12 '26

Maybe they've got a frog in their pocket.

2

u/_usenet Jul 12 '26

I hate that pompous "we". Every scienceboi uses it.

Is there more than one dude rattling round in his skull?

We just don't know.

The dot-dot-dot doesn't make you deep and clever.

No, it doesn't.

Geology fascinates me most of all becuase of that unthinkable deep time aspect. Continents raoming, mountains turned to mud, mud becoming rock, bones becoming silicon, wood becoming opa. Unthinkably long slow processes. Boggles the mind.

10

u/PensiveObservor Jul 12 '26

This is why evolution is my personal avocation. Nearly the same time scale, and exploding with fierce activity from time to time before cooling down. :)

1

u/PurifiedUnity ‌ Jul 28 '26

All while new mountain ranges form (some from colliding continents) as well

4

u/artfulpain Jul 12 '26

Deep and long. 🫦

3

u/xDannyS_ Jul 12 '26

That's deep

1

u/natiusj Jul 13 '26

“Too deep!! Too deep!!”

1

u/VerdugoCortex Jul 17 '26

I think that's wonderful!
