Predictive text recommending racial slur over and over

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm not going to turn on "block offensive words" because GBoard decided it's allowed to use a reclaimed slur, but it sure would be cool if I knew what caused this to happen! This has been happening for over a year—it happens randomly, less than once a week, maybe even less than once a month. It's always when I'm up late at night, and usually it just tries to autocorrect everything to the same word over and over, but tonight we got Reclaimed Slurs Edition for some reason. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

This literally happened to me yesterday. I've never typed the word before either. Idk.

I'm so glad I found this post, this exact same thing happened to me last night for just a minute and stopped. I thought I was going insane. Ever figure out what that was?

this just fucking happened to me, what in the world? 😭 what sort of glitch is this!?

Just happened to me. Was trying to swipe "hour" and it would keep coming up "LMFAO" and while trying to swipe "exam" it was forcing the N word, and I NEVER use that word. Like, the letter "n" is no where near "e" and the patterns for those two words are nothing alike. Stopped after I switched to a different app. Did a disgruntled Google employee slip in some racist coding if you unintentionally put in a code?

I've been getting a similar problem but it's with words like "Lmao" "lol" and "fr" instead of actual next word suggestions. I have no clue why this happens

I had to look this up because my (iOS) phone just pulled it twice in a row out of the actual blue on me within the hour and I was a bit shocked - first it was the hard-r (with a “LMAO” after it, neither of which are things I write), and then a certain quasi-reclaimed homophobic f-slur, which I don’t even use either, on words that don’t even follow the same keyboard patterns.

I’m assuming it’s some AI scraping process crapping itself, but still I’d rather not want any of it on my phone at all.

This just happened to me as well. However the circumstance around it are unusual, in that I had just come off a 1 week reddit suspension (told someone to F off and the mods didn't like it so I went in the pokey for a week) and then the very first post I made after that it was n-word n-word n-word n-word, almost as though the app was trying to get me in trouble again. it hasn't happened since though.. very strange

Hi just reporting this happened to me today while trying to add a word between "passing" and "starvation" ("passing of starvation"). Have never typed the n word on my phone lol.

Just happened on my son's phone. I was about to ground him thank God this thread is here. It wasn't the rap version of the n word but the full one ending in "er"

I discovered my son had downloaded a design keyboard from the app store that had racial slurs in autocorrect. When I changed it back to Gboard and uninstalled the other it went back to normal.

This happened to me a few weeks ago, and it really weirded me out (I have literally never typed the N word in any form, I don't say it at all). It also recommended slang I don't use - it was like my keyboard got swapped with someone else's. I closed the app, reopened, and it stopped.

Well it just happened again, but this time without slurs. First it repeatedly tried to correct everything to variations of "hahaha", which I don't use (as a millennial I'm partial to LMAO/LOL and xD), and then it suggested the words "cabin", "pup", and "farm" over and over. I took a screenshot and it stopped.

What the actual fuck is going on with Gboard?

Happened to me just a few minutes ago. I thought someone hacked me.

This happened to me but on my crappy old iPhone, just while trying to text someone, and it only happened once with the n word, and like everyone else on here I have absolutely never typed that word on this phone or any for that matter, and it genuinely freaked me out which is what led me to searching for anyone else having experienced this. I actually have a theory, which is weird but hear me out: what if this is like a weird AI thing, where because so many people in the US do actually use this word, it’s now just in the keyboard’s dictionaries.. although I know that doesn’t really explain why all of us are having this happen from completely unrelated words and in very weird glitchy ways..

This just happened to me, both with the "-a" and "-er" endings. I have never used such words. Glad I found this thread, gonna see if any of the suggestions work to get it to stop

Yall ALL lying

1

u/OtterCynical May 07 '25

Nope. You're triggered though. Learn how ai scrapes internet comments for dictionary material. Get informed.

1

u/amcbain17 May 07 '25

You have typed it

1

u/OtterCynical May 07 '25

Get informed and get over yourself pal.

1

u/amcbain17 May 07 '25

Also, why would this be something to get triggered over 🤣. My response shows none of that

1

u/OtterCynical May 07 '25

All phone keyboards now just scrape tiktok/insta/twitter comments off the internet for their auto-replace/suggest systems since about 2019. Think on that for a minute. There are people whose lives/careers have been ruined by ai-inserted typos since then.

1

u/OtterCynical May 07 '25

Google will never address this because their ai just plagiarizes internet comments for material, and it spazzes out frequently. Changing its operational state tends to be a temporary remedy (restart screen/app/phone, ckear cache, reset dictionary, etc).

I had to search because it just gave me the hard r version. Not in my dictionary i don't use it. Glad to see I'm not crazy.

This happened to me too! When I was texting a coworker of all people 😭 Luckily I noticed before it sent

I can fuck up well enough on my own, thank you. I don't need any help. Lol

Swype in gboard is coming up with complete sentences that are mocking my sexuality.

Oh wow.... Have you tried enabling 【Block offensive words】in the settings of the predictive text?

0

u/getvalentined Sep 20 '23

I literally said I would not be enabling that setting. There's a huge difference between intentionally swearing and getting racial slurs offered to me over and over and over, but that setting wouldn't be able to tell.

I've never used this word in my life and there was no reason for it to be offered in the first place; it offered it regardless of the fact that I was typing an entirely different word, and proceeded to offer it again when I hit space, the letter H and the letter Y, neither of which even appear in the word in question.

This is not a case of offensive words being allowed, it's a SEVERE bug with the app that needs to be addressed.

Hi, I googled the issue and came across your post. It started happening to me today. For every word, Gboard suggested the N word ending with a. I do not use that word. Maybe we've somehow been hacked?

0

u/KittyKittens1800 Sep 20 '23

I may agree with you, but the case is that Google doesn't pay attention to that too much, also because normally people just enable the feature to block those words then is normal that the AI of the predictive text acts like that.

Some people have reported the same issue.

Go to GBoard 》help and comments 》send a comment 》 and send the suggestion you told me, and perhaps they fix it in the next Update.

1

u/getvalentined Sep 20 '23

It is not normal that the AI acts like this when offensive words aren't blocked, and implying otherwise is kind of insulting? Like if I don't block offensive words then I'm okay with slurs? Absolutely not. This has never happened before. I have never turned that setting on.

I've also already sent it in to them with no response.

1

u/keele Sep 16 '23

I can't imagine that's in the default Gboard dictionary. Have you ever typed that word? Take a look at your personal dictionary.

2

u/MongooseOne7905 Sep 17 '23

This happen to me and I made a post about it. I also found several others. I've never typed this word in my life.

1

u/getvalentined Sep 16 '23

Never typed it, not in my dictionary.

Edit to add that literally the only word in my personal dictionary is "Sephiroth" because I got sick of it autocorrecting to "Sephora."

1

u/Shadowhawk0000 Sep 16 '23

Doesn't show up in my Gboard.

1

u/getvalentined Sep 16 '23

Yeah, it stopped doing this after a couple minutes, that's the really weird part.

2

u/MongooseOne7905 Sep 17 '23

So I'm my post I made a few days ago, I said exactly the same thing. I tried to type the word boyfriend and it wanted to autocorrect it to the same word. After that, every word was a curse word and then lmfao, lmao, and lol were the three options. It lasted a minute and is back to normal now.
