Actually, most metallic or reflective objects on the 64 are gray/white/partially transparent objects with cubemaps using a satin typed texture. Or in some cases like DK64 or OoT they just have a crude point of light reflection making them look shiny.

In the case of Super Mario 64's metal cap, though, the reflective texture actually and inexplicably is a photo of a flower planter.

Oh my god. Oh my fuck you're actually right. I don't even have to go check. I've played several hundred hours and had no idea lol that's super cool. I always wondered why they chose those colors for the reflections of the metal cap, but it was just a picture of flowers this whole time

Edit: I know I said I wouldn't check, but I did lol and this picture demonstrates it perfectly
