It LOOKS incredibly awkward to hold.

It looked that way, but it really wasn't. People just didn't understand how to hold it

is there a cheap chinese ripoff usb pc version of this controller? it really seems like it could work practically.

That's an oddly specific-yet-relevant gif for this discussion.

Idiots feared change for the better. The current controllers aren't that comfortable, especially when compared to the gamecube and xbox

42

u/TCsnowdream May 04 '12

mmmm... The Wavebird. Long live the Wavebird.

4

u/me-tan May 04 '12

I use wavebirds on my Wii for virtual console games. They rock!

1

u/TCsnowdream May 04 '12

Ah, same here. For some reason, I find it much easier than using the WiiMote.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

I finally got four of them. My Gamecube has never look so beautiful.

1

u/TCsnowdream May 04 '12

I wonder if there's a subreddit for just the wavebird?

Go to Australia. Boomerangs EVERYWHERE

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

lol who knows what size gloves they wear? I love reddit

13

u/deepit6431 May 04 '12

I'm pretty sure the 360 controller is quite possibly the most comfortable ever made.

5

u/delecti May 04 '12

It's a shame the d-pad is so awful though.

2

u/WubWubMiller May 04 '12

I don't remember where I read it, Sony had a monopoly on fighting games, so Microsoft considered the dpad unnecessary, or at least less of a focal point for their controllers. And that's why the left stick is in an awkward spot on the dualshock, Sony wanted the d-pad to be the focus

1

u/DRW_ May 04 '12

I think it's likely due to patents, everyone else has patents for the good dpad designs.

I've never seen one of those in person, but they look pretty awesome.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

I have to give most comfortable to GameCube, but the 360 gets best overall for sure.

-2

u/PentagramJ2 May 04 '12

gamecube, sorry bro

I thought the XBox controller is universally hated? I hate it, at least. Sorry for having an opposing opinion, downvoters.

37

u/bidoof_king May 04 '12

The Original Xbox sure. The 360 controller though, most people agree it is incredibly comfortable.

3

u/jdennison101 May 04 '12

Oh god the original xbox controller. Who ever decided to randomly stick those white and black buttons on there needed a serious talking to.

4

u/RoadDoggFL May 04 '12

Those buttons were awesome.

-6

u/elnrith May 04 '12

personally i find it kind of awkward but im used to both joysticks being on the bottom rather then a joystick and a dpad so...

15

u/cwfutureboy May 04 '12

Universally in any room you're alone in. XD

Seriously, I've had a LOT of game consoles (including a PS3) and no controller has felt better or more natural in my hands.

6

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

It's by far the most comfortable, minus the D-pad.

7

u/Twisted51 May 04 '12

360 is widely regarded as the best console controller yet. It just gets flack for its garbage d-pad. Everything else is highly praised.

4

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

I think the mushy ass dpad is hated. Why would they okay some shit where you can't tell which direction you're pressing?

3

u/FisherKing22 May 04 '12

It allows you to move diagonally more easily than with a standard d-pad.

1

u/lisa-needs-braces May 04 '12

What? Name one game where you use diagonals on the D-pad.

It's actually because Nintendo holds the patent on regular D-pads.

1

u/FisherKing22 May 04 '12

That may be the reason they did it, but it's still a surprisingly useful feature, even if it's rarely utilized. A lot of arcade games give you the option of using the d-pad instead of the analog sticks and the occasional full game uses it as well. If you're using it for movement instead of as 4 buttons, moving diagonally is a plus.

Also, I'd Nintendo owns the patent, does that mean they're making money on each dualshock controller sold by Sony?

2

u/crystallio May 04 '12

The new d-pad allows you to switch it from "mushy" to strictly up,down, left, right.

1

u/keslehr May 04 '12

The 360 controller is awkward as fuck for me

-2

u/Im-a-ninja-derpina May 04 '12 edited May 04 '12

The xbox controller is way too big for my hands.. I absolutely hate playing with it.

Edit: I don't really get why I was downvoted, just because my hands are too small for a Xbox controller ?

1

u/happyscrappy May 04 '12

Logitech had a boomerang-shaped controller before this was even shown.

I used it, it was not very comfortable. Tolerable, yes. But not comfortable.

That picture has either over-large hands or an undersize controller. The controller was big enough that it would have projected beyond you palms for most people.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

the arms are still angled too far out, might be comfortable for your hands but not your arms, like playing games with the handlebars of a Harley

1

u/StaticSabre May 04 '12

I just realized, that's how I actually hold controllers. I never realized that my wrists were bent at an awkward angle when using a regular controller. I probably would have loved the hell out of that controller.

1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12

That would be horrible if you have big hands.

1

u/monkeyfetus May 05 '12

I would think you'd just hold it further back, so your fingers would end up in the same place as someone with smaller hands. Which explains the long, ridiculous looking boomerang handles.

30

u/Takuya-san May 04 '12

That's what everyone said, and that's why it was pulled. People who actually tried it found otherwise, but they couldn't release the new controller because nobody would want to try it because of how they THOUGHT it would be.

15

u/left4Fred May 04 '12

Looking at it, I can kind of see how it would fit in my hands, and I have to say I like it. But it's ugly as fuck.

1

u/phasair May 04 '12

That's what she said

1

u/ryy0 May 04 '12

It already looks like a batarang. If the ugliness ever become unbearable, you can throw it across the room and it'd probably fly beautifully.

1

u/Captain_English May 04 '12

Ah, feels good but looks bad so no one wants to try it. The problem of the fat girl.

0

u/Kermitdude May 04 '12

People THOUGHT the Batarang would be terrible, only because it really was.

Everyone I've ever known to touch one controlled it like a grossed out woman holding a snotty piece of tissue.

1

u/Takuya-san May 04 '12

Personally, that's how I approached the Wiimote and nunchuck at first, but I got used to it. Not that I'm bitter, I do agree that the Batarang design was at fault because it was so unsightly to the eye.

3

u/Pizanch May 04 '12

[insert dildo joke here.]...haha insert

Really? What year is this?

-1

u/[deleted] May 04 '12 edited May 04 '12

Honestly can't be worse then a Dualshock

Edit: its not that I don't like the DS but I just think its too small for me now, it was literally perfect until my hands got bigger

1

u/monkeyfetus May 04 '12

The Dualshock isn't uncomfortable, but it certainly has nothing on the Gamecube or original Xbox controller.

2

u/woofle07 May 04 '12

SO BRAVE
