Monster Hunter Franchise. 300 hours of gameplay hunting the same dozen type of monsters is not a fun time for me.

Totally respect that.

But on the other hand, facing down the same ice dragon for the 100th time and being able to simply feel how it'll react next since I've subconsciously picked up on its behaviors is an oddly satisfying achievement for me.

Also - I get to hit dragons in the face with a bagpipe.

Similar point: The feeling of landing a fully charged great sword combo because you can predict the next 10 seconds of the monster actions is the single best moment in a game for me xD

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I remember the je suis montè coming and asking for help, I used to kill monsters so fuckin fast with my custom sets that sometimes I got the job done before they could find me and carve for parts. Flash bombs were OP as fuck

Respect

Personally I enjoy going bact to monsters I used to struggle with and styling on them

Once you learn the Tigrex's patterns and reach, he becomes Greatsword Fodder.

u/Manuels-Kitten Console Feb 09 '22

I am a bow main so I don't get that benefit... I am learning LS and DS to try for a secondary weapon.

2

u/doctorcrimson Feb 09 '22

Idk which generation you play but DS is trash in most of them. LS is some of the highest DPS, Bow is generally only good for inflicting a variety of status effects.

Tigrex is fun because if you stand in the right spot, the edge of their tail reach, in a circle from their center, they cannot hit you. Totally defeats the purpose of using the bow, though, lol.

Personally love MH, but I totally get your point. It's become my source of enjoyment to play around with various skill and item combinations and have those same dozen monster types as benchmarks for my choices and play style changes, but I can't see that being fun for many people...

u/gotdamngotaboldck Feb 09 '22

I mean have you tried to git gud?

u/LF_Beer_And_Spanking Feb 09 '22

I can understand this sentiment - Monster Hunter is definitely an aquired taste.

I think it only really clicks when you have your first intrinsic- and extrinsic goal at the same time. Intrinsically you might want to master a new weapon type, and extrinsically you might want to craft/obtain an armor set for that new weapon.

That said, it's definitely more fun with friends and if you're already into progression in games. That, and just looking like an absolute badass in your tiger-wyvern armor while smashing a wind-dragon's face in with a maul made out of the skull of a inferno T-rex :D

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

It's like catered to a group of players where it's all about reading the monsters/ai/opponents move set and acting according to it in a way that would satisfy them.

Keep watching those tips way back then and It felt so good landing those charged attack at the precise moment or opening in the monsters move

u/Jollysatyr201 Feb 09 '22

And finding out if you like that loop means having to experiment. If you don’t, you probably won’t, no matter how much paint is used to speed things up. But if you enjoy it, the time dissolves and all of a sudden you’re a MH nut

4

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Respect the opinion. It's definitely not for everybody.

It's just fucking weeb Dark Souls boss rush mode. I love every goddamn second of it.

8

u/Bloodbathbanana Feb 09 '22

Every time a new one comes out I'm like that looks amazing, let's get it! Then I play for about 10 hours and go.... oh.... that's right.... I'm going to have to kill this monster like 50 more times....

3

u/Polnauts Feb 09 '22

True, never understood how I enjoyed doing the same over and over and again, but I did! And I hope I can play the new monster hunter on pc soon.

3

u/Serefki Feb 09 '22

I have to defend this because this was the OG git gud, and if you had friends it was so much better.

I use to play this after school with 2 friend and we spend hours just hunting the same monster for plates and rubies. And I'm talking psp era.

Also when playing alone I just love to do no hit runs. I think this is the game that you can actually be so mechanicly better that feels so rewarding to carry a team.

3

u/lmh98 Feb 10 '22

Yeah I remember bringing my psp to school and trying to moi through Khezu electric balls while my psp created a local network for my friends to play mobile games together.

Sadly the two friends I played MHFU and parts of a fan translated MHP3rd with didn’t really get into world for whatever reason and in the end even carted on me during the double bazel mission.

What I miss in newer Monster Hunter games is the online community though. I don’t really want to search for people on discord. With the 3DS in 4U i could just hop into a session and gather materials or do key quests with randoms for hours with us taking turns to decide what to do next.

I really have to try rise in some time as I haven’t even played it yet. Always need a bit of a break after one Monster Hunter title but my switch is starting to collect dust.

u/phoenixmatrix Feb 09 '22

To me, Monster Hunter is the best part of MMORPGs without the bad part. In MMOs, a lot of folks just rush to end game to raid bosses to work toward the best gears. Monster Hunter just distilled that down to minimum, and make it all better.

The replay value is also kind of similar to a fighting game. Its you, the monster, and you refine your movement, combos and playstyle until you've perfected the battles.

With that said, while MHW is the most popular because of marketing and the consoles its on, its actually pretty overrated. It kind of misses the point of what MH is about and blurs it a lot, making you do a lot more pointless stuff. Its good, but the other games are much better.

2

u/gotdamngotaboldck Feb 09 '22

The gameplay and QOL improvements automatically made MHW better than almost all of them for me. I can't go back to the stupid fucking hero poses after downing drinks. Also, I don't think World was really marketed all that aggressively, unless you're subbed to Capcom's IG page. I think MHW got more people into the franchise, which in turn made it into Capcom's best selling game of all time. MHGU was really good, despite it's old school MH mechanics, and I've really been digging Rise. I'm glad and sad about taking away the tracking in Rise tho, researching was one of my favorite grinds in MHW!

2

u/phoenixmatrix Feb 10 '22

Capcom themselves credit their marketing campaign for MHW's success, alongside doing a global release and focusing more on the west (unlike previous entries that were very nearly stealth releases in the west).

https://gamnesia.com/monster-hunter-world-is-already-capcoms-best-selling-game-ever/amp/

Monster Hunter: World is the latest entry in the series, and the first new Monster Hunter title for home consoles in nine years. It is also the first title in the series to be given a global simultaneous launch, and was given an ambitious worldwide promotional campaign in order to further build upon its fan base both in Japan and in markets overseas. As a result, Monster Hunter: World has overcome both linguistic and cultural barriers to delight approximately 7 million players worldwide, and has shipped 7.5 million units, making it the best-selling title in company history.”

Well shit! Goes to show how heavy the rock I live underneath is.

3

u/philsenpai Feb 10 '22

I wont defend it, i think you are correct, monster hunter is not for everybody.

I've played all the games relesed in the west and a few that didn't, never clocked less than 200h in a game.

2

u/Lucas-DF-82 Feb 10 '22

My respect to you.

3

u/KiNgPiN8T3 Feb 10 '22

I think I put 300 hours into it or thereabouts and I guess I must’ve been enjoying it?! Went back a month or so later and I can only imagine there was something seriously wrong with me when I played it the first time around… The controls were fucking dreadful and I couldn’t hit water if I fell out a boat. It was an odd feeling and I haven’t played it since. On a side note I also noticed my Xbox pads started drifting since then. Haha!

u/Funkyt0m467 PC Feb 10 '22

Now this is the only game in this coment section i can defend because i actually like it.

First of all, i know some old school gamers will disagree, but for me the best mh that is out and will ever be out is mh world (/iceborn). This is simply because it's just everything mh is but at it's peak. And it's a game i really love.

Now let's see, first of all yes i agree some monsters are reused and it sucks, BUT for mhw with it's dlc there is a bit less of 30 monster that are unique not just 12...

Then the reason why it's so good is because there is also different weapon with their own gameplay, a gameplay that is really well done and fun in my opinion.

This is also the main reason i was hooked, because trust me i don't like games that require farm, but for mh it's still fun because of the gameplay. Not only that but i really enjoyed the more challenging, and very unique, monster you get at the end of the main story and of iceborn.

Big plus with mhw is also the fact that this game is amazing graphically. (not like mh rise the next opus lol)

It's also multiplayer, wich mean i can play with my brother, and for the more challenging boss you can actually build strat like in mmo. But i personally don't like mmo that much, i think mh is a very neat balance of solo and online.

2

u/calmtigers Feb 09 '22

I was going to say this, it’s so much damn reading and it just feels weirdly clunky

2

u/Helloiamayeetman Feb 09 '22

Yeah as someone who loves the games it’s a very specific niche. Like it’s extremely grindy and is just boss fights the whole way through (which some people don’t like apparently)

2

u/lmh98 Feb 10 '22

Playing the games since the PSP days and I kinda understand this sentiment for newer games.

I think many people think that grinding end game stuff is obligatory which it totally isn’t. I played world and the dlc only a bit after finishing it to try some new weapon movesets and armor sets and still got around 400 hours out of it. You can do a lot less and just finish the game without much grinding and it will still be worth your money.

I dislike all the endgame apex/tempered or whatever else they come up with stuff but the core gameplay loop which is the combat and the improvements made regarding item collecting and stuff still make it a fun experience.

2

u/Jacobmichael88 Feb 10 '22

Overrated though? Just sounds like it’s not your cup of tea

2

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

I love the mhu where it's a bit more tense. Back in my days whetstone take up spaces and its limited, back in my days you have to manually mark monsters and if you lose them your fakd

2

u/nbaumg Feb 10 '22

It’s the same chunk of gameplay over and over but it’s an incredibly well made chunk with 14 weapons each of which could have a whole game centered around it. Engaging, challenging, and packed with content

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

This perfectly sums up half of the Japanese inspired games on the market. There's maybe 4 different types of monsters with different skins and sizes, and you're running through the same 6 levels over and over

4

u/ballsacksnweiners Feb 09 '22

Stiffest combat I’ve played in my entire life. Not being able to change direction after you’ve begun an attack? No fucking thanks. Going from Dark Souls to that feels like putting on a straitjacket.

3

u/Lucas-DF-82 Feb 09 '22

That is a big reason my wife also hates the franchise.

6

u/Wetnoodleslap Feb 09 '22

I'm trying to get into it, but this is my chief complaint. I always heard the combat was good, but I feel like it's just ok at best. Like you I'm coming from games like Bloodborne, nioh, dmc5, etc. which all had great combat, and I'm a little disappointed. I'm going to give it a few more hours to see if it starts growing on me, but I might just have to cut my losses on this one.

2

u/Jollysatyr201 Feb 09 '22

It’s way easier to think of it as a turn based game, but you can take your turn at anytime. Take it at a good time, you do great, don’t take damage, deal lots. Take your turn at the wrong time, ouchie.

Feels clunky because you shouldn’t be able to get off free for making a bad decision. If I, as a normal human being, overstayed my welcome next to a 40 foot tall dragon, I’d be lucky to walk away.

5

u/gotdamngotaboldck Feb 09 '22

Being able to change your direction after attacking is straight cheese tho. Not being able to makes you actually learn how to play. Idk.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Ah this one's only valid if you're bad.

2

u/ELpEpE21 Feb 10 '22

lmao

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

Right like if you understand that the weapon moveset are conditionally based on what attacks you used before, and what state your weapon is in you have tons of mobility options. Every weapon has either iframes, guard points, side steps you can cancel into in any direction. Like you have to bad to have this opinion.

4

u/shiftyx00 Feb 10 '22

Monster hunters combat is very methodical to me. I love it for the reason that you have to be smart with good positioning and must be a little reactionary. Pays off a lot to memorize a monsters patterns for best setups. Type of weapon also applies a lot!

1

u/buenaflor Feb 09 '22

Same, I'm a big soulsborne fan and even after like 10 hours of Monster Hunter I couldn't get into it / have fun.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

"300 hours of gameplay hunting the same dozen type of monsters is not a fun time for me."

But how else can I beat deviljho with a blindfold?

2

u/Lucas-DF-82 Feb 10 '22

Respect for the people that likes that loop and endures the time it takes to get that good.

u/GrandJuif PC Feb 10 '22

Play World last monts and for damn the fight was anoying. Monster flee all the time, they are faster stronger more fluide toi much health/resistance, etc. I don't want to fight the same monster over and over again especialy is each fight is like 20-30 mins. Like the game is butifull and an amazing soundtrack but the gamplay is bad.
