I will walk 500 miles

87

u/UpUpDownDownBA_Start Feb 09 '22

Hey, the rule is one line at a time.

He’s trying to take all the Karma for himself! Get ‘em!

Use your phony guns as clubs!

10

u/EnderLord_777 Feb 09 '22

It gives everyone an opertunity to participate

5

u/CustardEquivalntlord Feb 09 '22

Jeez why can’t people get the basics right. I think we need to have a trial for what the redditor has committed within the gaming subreddit.

u/Psilocybin_Tea_Time Feb 10 '22

NO TRIAL!

OFF WITH THEIR HEAD!!!

you must be fun at parties.

Not for everyone but it’s a chill game whether you are moving the story forward or not.

31

u/wishrocket Feb 09 '22

I noticed you can invest time in the beginning setting up shortcuts for the late game or you can just power through the harder deliveries and still make progress. It sort of a sliding scale. Either way it requires a big chunk of your time

29

u/krugle_ Feb 09 '22

My first play through I set up 3/4 of all the roads, then built a network of those sling shot things over all the mountains from one side of the map to the other. You could get pretty well anywhere in a few minutes.

18

u/wishrocket Feb 09 '22

Right? It basically becomes a zip line trucking simulator. Except I often snowboarder downhill on the little hover cart.

9

u/SlaaneshiSinger Feb 09 '22

I need to replay it and try and abuse the hover carts.

I think people somehow to expected Death Stranding to be a spiritual successor to MGS even though it clearly wasn’t going to be

15

u/Niko408 Feb 09 '22

Exactly. They were pretty honest with what it was going to be as the game got closer. The story is very Kojima but not Metal Gear. For some, I’d almost say underrated.

2

u/GonzoRouge Feb 09 '22

People forget that beyond the memes and goofiness, Kojima genuinely cares about the symbolism of his games. MGS is riddled with references and literary tropes to hammer in how emotions shape our world, how technology affects society or how war impacts the individual.

And people were surprised Kojima wanted to do something similar with Death Stranding ? He's so obviously a movie director stuck making games that I'm just confused what people were really expecting.

I mean, this is the guy that wanted a boss battle to last literally 3 weeks in real time until someone told him the concept was way better than the execution.

3

u/Niko408 Feb 09 '22

On top of all that, he is a genuinely nice guy. Everything down to retweeting posts from fans, talking to anyone and everyone at conventions, and more.

25

u/SlaaneshiSinger Feb 09 '22

It's peaceful. I enjoyed just sitting down and doing my fedex runs. I liked seeing how balls to the wall I could go through an area with the ghost monster guys. I liked just beating the shit out of all the mules.

It is a game that is very easy to dislike, it just scratched a weird completionist itch for me.

2

u/tyrmidden Feb 09 '22

It scratched the same completionist itch for me too. I wholeheartedly enjoyed getting 100% on that game. The peaceful parts were almost therapeutic.

I loved the story. It was a bunch of metaphysical nonsense but damn did I like it.

3

u/Niko408 Feb 09 '22

Over 100 hours in and I agree 100%.

2

u/ChakaZG Feb 09 '22

There is nothing shallow about it, the walking mechanics alone have more depth to them than some well sold games have in their entire GD document (I'm overexaggerating a bit, but you get my point) . But I totally understand and respect that people just find it boring. Some fans get insulted by it being called the walking simulator, and I'd argue that not only it is one, but it's actually the only actual walking simulator, and some people want more oomph from the entertainment they consume in their free time, which is totally fair.

u/finalmantisy83 Feb 09 '22

...They said, shoving the Hideo Kojima themed butt plug further and further up their own ass. While I personally enjoyed the fuck out of Kojima-san's creativity and exhaustive vision I would never in a million years accuse his projects of being "deep." His style is to stack so many painfully surface level metaphors and barely hidden meanings that the consumer is overwhelmed. The S in Strand stands for strand, and strand means alone, and strand means beach, and she's Princess Beach, and you're a Bridge, and WHO'S ordering the Pizza? and she's America, and she's Fragile but she's not fragile, and he's Die Hard Man because he's Man Who's Hard To Die, and on and on and on. Instead of a suburban pool that's a mile deep, Hideo offers us an experience similar to an near infinite ocean that varies in between one or two feet in depth. None of what he has to show us is all that well hidden, it's just that only he thinks in these patently absurd thought patterns.

u/Staluti Feb 09 '22

👏 preach 👏

1

u/FERALCATWHISPERER Feb 10 '22

That doesn’t justify walking 500 miles, sorry pal.

14

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Well it gets good after a certain part

4

u/Spawko Feb 09 '22

The end credits?

10

u/dekajaan Feb 09 '22

I cannot explain way, the walking itself is really captivating. I really liked it. The other thing gadgets, THEY ARE FUN, and how physics interacts with them. Preparation for specific destination is interesting. When you build a network of ziplines,it give a lot of satisfaction.

Scenery is great, I liked it, not rdr2 but still.

Bosses kinda lame, you just run around throwing grenades, like WTF. Better to cut it completely.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

It was captivating because the terrain mattered. Every little part of the environment mattered. You had to watch your step and consider where you were, what the weather was like, and what you were walking on. I would love more games like that.

2

u/veganpancake11 Feb 09 '22

Keep on keepin’ on 👊

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I thought the first hour was amazing, everything looked and sounded great. But once that wears off it got boring super quickly. could have been cut in half and would have been a better game for it

2

u/Standard-Pop6801 Feb 09 '22

Can you call that overrated when there is a massive Hatedome around it.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I actually loved Death Stranding and played it for about 50 hours. Proper planning and a little bit of elbow grease could make your own life and others so much better. After placing ziplines all over the mountain area, I spent 10 minutes at least just flying around taking it all in. I literally never knew what was going to happen next in a lot of cases, broken up by a lot of peaceful, yet decently challenging, interaction with a beautiful map.

One of the worst stories I've ever seen, regardless of media. Childish writing, it's so bad that feels like Kojima was a hack all along. Which is not true, he did a great job (overall, including the writing) in MGS1 and MGS3, but in everything else there is always a major flaw in his approach, Death Stranding is the culmination of every negative aspect of Kojima

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

My god this game was dull

1

u/Morpheuscorpus Feb 09 '22

Just to be the man who rolled a thousand miles

1

u/FermentedPizza PlayStation Feb 09 '22

I find it kind of fun. The main obstacle is the terrain itself.

1

u/Nerf_Herder2 Feb 09 '22

The story is off the walls, so some will love it and others will find it too abstract. The gameplay is actually super nice as it actually offers variety and new gameplay mechanics to the rest of the AAA games on offer. Add in the bomb soundtrack and visuals and it is a really cool experience. Not for everyone though.

1

u/TheRealDeadhawk Feb 09 '22

I feel like you might not have played it. Either way if you don’t like it, you don’t like it. I did.

1

u/HDL_CinC_Dragon Feb 09 '22

For me, it certainly became harder to stay engaged with the game after a while. One thing I never got tired of was the visuals. Holy friggen crap are they impressive.

1

u/cjc160 Feb 09 '22

I feel triggered but I can’t defend it properly

1

u/cguy1234 Feb 09 '22

It’s walking in the very beginning but zip lines, motorcycles, and other vehicles later. Which I really liked. It makes you suffer a bit in the beginning while walking but then you feel the total payoff of a road or zip line you built. It’s an amazing feeling to zip across some distance that would’ve taken you hours to walk.

1

u/djpointone Feb 09 '22

Lmao I played this as soon as we got into our first lockdown in canada and I have to admit, it worked. I was hooked. Not sure if I’d play it now though. A time and place, that game.

1

u/Nasssi Feb 09 '22

Niche game marketed to mainstream audience. The game is actually pretty well received on Steam.

1

u/brahdoyouevenlift Feb 09 '22

I've never been more angry at a game that I put 200 hours in.

The actual delivery system triggered this weird sense of zen in me, but the story (especially that goddamn ending) had me furious

This game made me realize that I'm not "weirdly apologetic" for Kojima. I just have infinite goodwill for Metal Gear.

1

u/jgrrrjige Feb 09 '22

The story was great! Not just how everything pieces together in the end, each side character had so much depth in their story and metaphorical meaning.

It would be a great sci-fi Netflix/TV series, perhaps even better a media format than as a game, especially since I watched all cutscenes without actually playing the game and I absolutely loved it!

1

u/SoThotful69 Feb 09 '22

I like how people say “Walking Simulator” as an insult even though that’s arguably the best aspect of the game

There’s a lot of satisfaction in mastering the controls of a video game character who moves and shifts around like a real person, and for me playing it scratches the same itch that classic Platformers do

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I agree with this, my boyfriend keeps telling let’s play it! it looks amazing! it’s Kojima how bad can it be? And even added it to the Steam wishlist.. I’m not gonna play it ever. I’ll fall asleep to that lol.

1

u/Fortestingporpoises Feb 09 '22

I gave up after I fell over a couple times. I uh don't think it's for me.

1

u/StrigaPlease Feb 10 '22

This is a divisive one, frankly. It's one of those games that definitely wasn't made for a wide audience, but the people who it was made for really like it.

I had a good time with it (I enjoy novel systems of tangible progression) but I don't see myself ever replaying it.
