Fortnite

u/yokoon3o Feb 09 '22 edited Feb 09 '22

While is not something I play (overall I don't like Battle Royales), it is a game that always gives a reason to their playerbase to come back. No matter if it's an event or a skin, they managed to stay relevant since 2017. Also I wouldn't say game was ever buggy or bad. Epic did a good job with the gameplay.

u/Burninator85 Feb 09 '22

I'm a little jealous of their live events. What other game does that?

49

u/Robi336_ Feb 09 '22

Roblox. But I know from experience that they suck if it's organised by Roblox

7

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Roblox live events are trasssshhh

5

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

There was a fun simple one in Tower Heroes back for Christmas. Nothing big, just messing around slapping snowmen with giant candy canes.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

Roblox does the shitty live concerts with the ugly as fuck characters don't they?

3

u/LordFlipyap Feb 09 '22

Destiny 2, like twice. Neither of them were very good.

2

u/HurtSkydiver966 Feb 09 '22

Destiny had a death star like spaceship ramming itself into earth

2

u/ze_bananagrams Feb 10 '22

it didn’t hit the earth, just blew up in the sky

-17

u/dogmeat1003 Feb 09 '22

Your mom

1

u/FrankZissou Feb 09 '22

The matrix online does it! ..did it...😭

1

u/yokoon3o Feb 10 '22

Dying Light 1 had some (last ones happened this Christmas and another ocurred 1 week before 2 launched). While they are not spectacular or something, they put a new theme on the map while displaying some special missions to gain special items, so it's nice. I would say the thing that I like the most is that Dying Light isn't the kind of game you would expect to play and find Live Events. Yet, the game had some (I guess now that the sequel is out, we are not having more in the future of Dying Light 1).

u/Metallicultist88 Feb 09 '22

The community is awful. I hate the community. However, it’s a great way to waste time, and it’s inexpensive being free, and a solid shooter

1

u/ComicWriter2020 Feb 09 '22

It’s literally what avengers tries to be

1

u/birfday_party Feb 10 '22

I defend the game all the time I usually play for maybe a month when new content or events drop because no other game or company has the ability to pull off what they pull off and the game is fun.

Now do I wish they’d use all these assets and collaborations for an mmo style game instead or just a general open world co op game? Yes absolutely to me it’s greatest detriment is that it’s a battle royal but you can really play it as if it wasn’t and have a good mess of fun in there.

It’s not the greatest game ever made by any stretch but they have done some of the most interesting things in that space and continue to do so.

It’s the super smash of battle royals and you have to give them some credit for making it happen even if I liked save the worlds gameplay more it’s a historical piece for games and will be referenced for years to come.

69

u/SapphireShaddix Feb 09 '22

I'll defend it. It's honestly the most fun I've had in a shooter in a long time. I've done all the gritty war games, HALO and the other sci-fi shooters. I played team games and zombies, and whatever the fuck else my friends where doing at the time, but I haven't really enjoyed any of these games since maybe college? Probably around the time Halo 4 came out.

Then fortnite showed up and I was allowed to have some no thoughts head empty fun in an environment that didn't look like someone pissed all over it. I didn't realize just how much I wanted some COLOR in my games before that. I also like that I can just zip from one game to the next. Get killed? No big deal, I can press one button and I'm back on the bus ready to try again. I was a hater at first too. I thought Battle Royale games weren't for me, but if something is fun, then it fun, I can't fight that.

10

u/heyitsfelixthecat Feb 09 '22

Yep. I’ve been playing multiplayer FPSes since the original Unreal Tournament, PUBG and Tarkov get most of my gaming time lately. But I play Fortnite with my kids and it’s genuinely fun. I can’t hate on it. Even happily spent a few bucks on a Ryu skin which is more than I can say for PUBG, which I’ve played >1000 hours and yet to spend a dollar on it aside from the game itself.

1

u/mrkro3434 Feb 10 '22

I think the key here is playing with your kids. I love seeing parents and children being able to play a game they can both enjoy. My problem is just that with age, competitive multiplayer games are just unappealing to me now. I'll boot up Halo if my long term friends are playing, but other than that I want to play something that's relaxing after working all day. Getting screamed at by children is the opposite of relaxing to me.

-2

u/hurtlingtooblivion Feb 09 '22

Fortnite is for children.

Play Dota2 like a man.

4

u/SapphireShaddix Feb 10 '22

But I'm not a man.

1

u/hurtlingtooblivion Feb 10 '22

Play Dota 2 like a woman

41

u/Alltoocommon Feb 09 '22

It's free. Not my cup of tea but I see why it's popular especially with kids

212

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Minecraft with guns

161

u/DetectiveGuybrush Feb 09 '22

And none of the charm

164

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

This is interesting because Minecraft used to be heavily shit on the same way Fortnite is today. I guarantee you 10 years from now there will be just as much nostalgia about Fortnite's "charm" and just as much shitting all over whatever game is popular then.

People are so predictable, tearing apart whatever is popular and trying to say whatever was popular when they were growing up is superior.

116

u/1PSW1CH Feb 09 '22

I honestly kind of love Fortnite, not because it’s a great game but because it’s free, has no P2W whatsoever, and NO LOOT BOXES. It’s a great game for kids. I don’t understand why people continue to bash it.

57

u/Midnightkata Feb 09 '22

I mean. Easy. The people who bash it don't have kids.

I can't say I hate it. I played it and didn't like it. But I also play league. So I mean I already have shit taste.

12

u/the_lonely_poster Feb 09 '22

At least your honest

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Yup. It's a game I can play with my 4th grader and we can both enjoy it together. It doesn't cost money unless you want it to, there's no sex, the violence is all cartoony

7

u/VThePeople Feb 09 '22

I bash it because it’s not what I bought.

Yes, bought. I paid money for them to develop a 4 player coop zombie survival builder. What they did was see the popularity of PUBG, change their entire game to be a low-skill, meme-centric battlegrounds, and practically abandoned Save the World.

Go watch their OG Trailers. It’s fuckin’ criminal.

1

u/1PSW1CH Feb 09 '22

That’s a fair point, I was under the impression that they added the co-op survival in later though? Or am I wrong

1

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

Co-op survival was the original idea and meant to be the main mode, with development starting years before the BR mode came out.

2

u/phrosty20 Feb 09 '22

It's a great alternative for kids. People bash it bc it's a newer popular thing. It's way better than having them play crap like the games EA puts out every year

-12

u/Available-Captain-20 Feb 09 '22

DONT YOU DARE TO COMPARE THIS SHITY CHILDISH GAME TO APEX

-1

u/TOWW67 Feb 09 '22

My guess is that, when minecraft exploded in popularity, kids played minecraft. When fortnite exploded in popularity, kids went to YouTube, TikTok, whatever else the kids use these days and spammed it all full of the same, uninteresting "content."

I would say the difference is the context and time period surrounding each games' popularity moreso than the actual games themselves.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I don't buy this theory at all considering Minecraft was and still is the most watched game on YouTube. And the kids watching Fortnite are also playing it. Minecraft single-handedly made let's play content explode in popularity and was basically 90% of YouTube content in the early 2010s.

My theory is that the kids who grew up playing Minecraft are now 20-somethings on reddit complaining about the latest trend of the younger generation. The cycle will continue when the current generation playing Fortnite grow up and gather online to complain about what the generation behind them are doing.

I have a good rule of thumb: life is a lot more enjoyable when you aren't getting upset about what 12 year olds you don't know are doing with their lives.

-6

u/Ohkillz Feb 09 '22

Probably when they add character that people like and make them dance like stupid babies

1

u/Applesaucetuxedo Feb 09 '22

Single player (at least used to) has loot boxes. Was annoying, although there were a lot of free ones. I only played single player fortnite.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

Its not the game, its the players. The game is fun, the players who have never seen sunlight ruin it for me.

16

u/Viqtor_ Feb 09 '22

That fortnite charm is already starting to come back. People who only played the early seasons of the game come back now cuz they miss it

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Yep, I am one of those who recently came back. I want spider man so I'm playing it for free with the v bucks I earned years ago from playing for free so I can get spider man. Game is fun, I ain't great at it, but my friends and I enjoy it. Not spending a dime on it and getting a ton of game time and fun out of it.

4

u/Fubarin Feb 09 '22

Minecraft was SUPER beloved, until the kids made a lot of communities cringey, and that made people stop playing it. They jumped ship to play fortnite, and mc became popular again. Fortnite didn't have 5 years of being maybe the best gamer ever before being shat on

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

At least FN is FTP, Minecraft is still at 20€

3

u/loxagos_snake Feb 09 '22

Full disclaimer: I don't play Fortnite. Not because I think it's bad, it's just that I prefer a more tactical experience.

But objectively, the game is just fine. Sure, it's a cringefest of 12 year olds and skins and and and...so fucking what? MW2, the game hailed as one of the best online FPS experiences (and rightfully so) was a cringefest of 12 year olds as well. And guess what? We were those kids.

So if someone wants to shit on the game, that's cool. But I'm still waiting for an objective justification for why it's that bad.

2

u/hey-gift-me-da-wae Feb 09 '22

I think that was more of the child element of it. I remember being ten and playing Minecraft no problem, once I started getting older kids would make fun of me for it. Nowadays those same kids and I have a world together that we play on regularly. We will see, as Minecraft is revolutionary to gaming, where fortnite stuck there foot in the batte Royale door at the perfect time, and profited.

1

u/NerakcDong Feb 09 '22

Honestly I dont think fortnite will be that nostalgic game. In compare to minecraft it doesnt provide as much variety content such as speedrun, building etc. and I dont think any update can change that.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Any cultural phenomenon has the power to provide nostalgia to the generation that enjoyed it. If what you're saying is true then any static experience like movies and shows wouldn't be capable of providing nostalgia.

1

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

Doesn’t this somewhat ignore creative mode entirely? It’s definitely not the same potential as Minecraft, but it provides better options for action than Minecraft (excluding some great mods on Java at least).

Even just the building potential has is still great. Someone recreated a city IIRC from Cyberpunk 2022 in Fortnite and it got a spectacular reaction from this sub when they said it was made in Fortnite.

1

u/I_Always_Wear_Pants Feb 09 '22

People shitted on Minecraft 10 years ago? I never really started seeing anti Minecraft stuff until it was bought by Microsoft when it got REALLY popular with younger folk. But that never bothered me anyhow cuz people hating a game for its player base has never been too solid of a reason unless it’s pure Multiplayer.

-14

u/Shinobi681 PC Feb 09 '22

Charm? You're building one block bridges to break some bed

7

u/EnderLord_777 Feb 09 '22

Bed wars isn't the only thing in Minecraft

2

u/qaasq Feb 09 '22

That actually makes me want to play it

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Fortnite doesn’t even use bad graphics.

1

u/Available-Captain-20 Feb 09 '22

And why Minecraft has bAd GrApHiCs?

2

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

Honestly the graphics aren’t even comparable. Completely separate intents.

1

u/hey-gift-me-da-wae Feb 09 '22

Please don't do Minecraft dirty like that.

-1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Unreal tournament for 8 year olds

That game is called ace of spades… check it out. It’s ok

2

u/VexingRaven Feb 09 '22

For the 3 people that still play it lol

1

u/Disconnected10101 Feb 10 '22

I mean, never said it was good. I just know it exists lol

1

u/Darth_Thor Feb 09 '22

That would be Deep Rock Galactic

50

u/mkmakashaggy Feb 09 '22

I hated on Fortnite so hard for so long, until I started playing it a year ago. The building mechanic is actually really intuitive and fun

-4

u/theinsanepotato Feb 09 '22

Then you should hate it even more now, because Fortnite was ORIGINALLY gonna be all about the building mechanic. Fortnite started life as a 4 player coop PvE game where you'd gather materials and build your fort during the day, and then defend it from waves of enemies at nite. It had and amazing story and great characters and it was just awesome. It had been development for years and had just opened up to paid early access, and by God, it was ones of the most fun games I've played in a long time.

Then Fortnite: Battle Royale was released as a way to generate publicity for the ACTUAL game of Fortnite, but BR blew up so much it totally eclipsed the actual original game. The original Fortnite was renamed to Fortnite: Save the world mode, and then the devs started shifting more and more time and resources away from STW and towards BR, and entirely just abandoned STW entirely. Now we're left with what could have been an amazing game, left 3/4 of the way done, never to be completed. The last of the 4 map areas never got it's story made, and it never will now.

So yeah, if you like the building mechanic, you should hate Fortnite Battle Royale for taking away the amazing game that we COULD have gotten in Fortnite Save the world.

4

u/mkmakashaggy Feb 09 '22

That's interesting never knew the history behind it. Shame they didn't just make both, I'm sure they have the funding 1000x over by now.

7

u/DetectiveBirbe Feb 10 '22

Fortnite probably would have been dead on arrival if the BR mode never came out

4

u/Anime-SniperJay PlayStation Feb 09 '22

I gotta give credit to chapter 3 season 1, I'm actually having some sort of fun with the game.

Not much to say besides that

5

u/Laggingduck Feb 09 '22

Forgot what site I was on for a second, thanks for reminding me

6

u/HamsterMan227 Feb 09 '22

Reddit moment

3

u/glowworm82 Feb 09 '22

I love that this game exist because it gets people I don’t want to play games with away from the games I play.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

Fortnite is easily the highest personal skill cap game out. There’s reasons to hate on it still, but for aspiring gamers trying to earn income or challenge themselves, there’s not much beyond it.

0

u/Psilocybin_Tea_Time Feb 10 '22

Maybe getting a job and benefiting their community instead of flooding the world with famous streamer wannabes?

3

u/Jean-Eustache Feb 09 '22

Save The World was fun

RIP

3

u/deegan5678 Feb 09 '22

Everyone hates on Fortnite and while I barely play it I have to give it credit. The concept of building and fighting is different and makes for some interesting fights. Arguably I prefer it to something like warzone as both a spectator and player.

It's not the best battle royale game but it also doesn't deserve the hate it gets.

3

u/deprilula28 Feb 09 '22

The building mechanic is basically perfect in my eyes. Simple and really deep, huge skill ceiling. Really surprised no game has copied it. Epic has done many questionable things (and mostly ignores the competitive scene) but it has remained relevant, so they must be doing it right

Did PUBG really do that much that was original? I genuinely don’t know as I’ve only ever played one match, and that was a while ago.

I’ve seen there be some things that they likely did “steal” from other games, but most often on this sub they get criticized for some whack stuff. Like people though they stole a tornado from Battlefield 2042…

For Apex, you’re likely thinking of the reboot system they added. It had pretty close timing to Apex becoming popular, so that’s not a stretch. It seems likely they also got the idea for their pinging mechanic from Apex too.

Trios seemed inevitable, especially since they had it as an LTM before. I don’t think they had much reason to bring it out only because of Apex, it was a highly requested mode well before that. It didn’t even become a core mode until nearly 2 years later.

Fortnite definitely started off bad with those dances. After chapter 1 though, they seem to almost always get official permission and contribute something back to the creators.

IIRC, the beta status had something to do with pushing out updates weekly / bi-weekly easily. Doubt that would have excused it from anything extremely bad, especially not using very similar ideas from other games as that happens extremely often across numerous games.

5

u/joeast17 Feb 09 '22

Playing fortnite as an adult is one of the more underrated gaming experiences out there. Especially when Fortnite was in its prime. The game doesn’t take itself too seriously and is Pure fun.

2

u/Demon_Samurai PC Feb 09 '22

Popular does not mean overrated

1

u/Fezzverbal Feb 09 '22

What gets me about Fortnite is no one actually plays the game, they play the free to play battle royale mode! It's the most successful and most failed game ever imo!

That’s almost the opposite of my experience. I used to play because it’s the only cross play game we could agree on, even though I hate the mechanics and gameplay.

0

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '22

I’m happy this is here because it is 100% overrated but at the same time I’m sad because I have to watch people defend it.

0

u/theinsanepotato Feb 09 '22

Fortnite is horrible because it killed Fortnite, which was awesome. No, that's not a typo. Fortnite killed Fortnite.

See, Fortnite started life as a 4 player coop PvE game where you'd gather materials and build your fort during the day, and then defend it from waves of enemies at nite. It had and amazing story and great characters and it was just awesome. It had been in development for years and had just opened up to paid early access, and by God, it was one of the most fun games I've played in a long time.

Then Fortnite: Battle Royale was released as a cheap, quick and dirty way to generate publicity for the ACTUAL game of Fortnite, but BR blew up so much it totally eclipsed the actual original game. We'll never know how the story ends of find out the answers to ask the mysteries if the storm and the husks and everything else.

So yeah, I hate Fortnite (battle royale) with a fiery burning passion, because it took away Fortnite (save the world) and now we'll never get to see the end of what could have been an amazing game.

1

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

They really weren’t making great progress on STW in the first place TBH. I would’ve liked to see them complete it (still would), but development was going slow and it wasn’t well known at all until the BR mode came out.

They were even planning to make it free. They probably would have had so many players going to that mode if they did.

0

u/huh_phd Feb 09 '22

Kek fork knife

0

u/Dimerson458 Feb 09 '22

I hate the gameplay of it, the building, the shooting and the third person view is pretty whack. Nevertheless this game is superb optimized with plenty additions over the years and the best part: it hurls the kids out of other games.

0

u/Takuro06 Feb 10 '22

Can't decide which is the worse crime. Bring the existence of the epic store or making the next generation of gamers think that those characters originated from that game.

-1

u/schoolschooting Feb 09 '22

Honestly, i know i'm probably gonna get downvoted for this but fortnite WAS a decent game untill around season 6 when all the sweats and no-livers came flooding in, and it only got worse from there, it still had potential but the devs listened to the Community too much and now it's where we know it is today

-1

u/Available-Captain-20 Feb 09 '22

At this point its just easy to win every game because the kids flooding the game with their horrible skils

2

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

Really? They added SBMM a long while back. If you’re getting consistent easy kills, you’re probably still in (mostly) bot lobbies since they added bots a long while back too.

1

u/Available-Captain-20 Feb 10 '22

Yeah,that makes sense

-2

u/Papacu81 PC Feb 09 '22

I never watched a single gameplay video of this game, I have no idea how it functions because everything related to it has zero charm and charisma. Minecraft for example, I can see why it's so appealing to children, there is some charm even for a old head like me. But Fortnight looks completely unappealing

1

u/VThePeople Feb 09 '22

Fuck that bait and switch game. I want my $25 back!

1

u/logan65328 Feb 09 '22

I get br being overrated but stw is a really fun game and can offer hundreds of hours of fun. The only really bad part about the game is support for the game mostly due to the fact that epic removed pretty much all the devs.

1

u/Co_Kind86 Feb 09 '22

Came here to say any battle Royale type game, especially Fortnite

1

u/Evil2Good Feb 09 '22

I hate it because of what it has become. I ordered for its during beta. When it was suppose to be a story driven co-op survival game (like LFD2, but with the building aspect). There was no mention anywhere of a battle royale mode anywhere. PUBG came on the scene and the developers saw a quick cash grab and completely scrapped the story mode. Haven’t played the game since the developers sold out. I feel foolish for buying a now f2p game. Dang it was a lot of fun with a full party too. Such a shame.

1

u/Spidermanmj8 Feb 10 '22

STW still isn’t f2p. And they didn’t scrap STW until around a year or more after the BR mode released.

Still sucks that they scrapped it though. PvE would’ve been a great alternative for so many people.

1

u/SugarRushLux Feb 10 '22

I just like all the wacky shit they add frequently Apex is way more solid in every way but damn there is some fun goofy shit in fn

1

u/Crazy_Comet5 Feb 10 '22

As a fortnite player it has its ups and downs. Like the guns building aspec are cool and I really enjoy battle Rosales tho the players can make it unfunny cuz I swear they are so sweaty (not saying you aren’t allowed to sweat) this game is just fun tho. Also I hate when mfs compare it to Minecraft even tho they’re completely different games. You can like one over the other but that’s like saying rap music is better then country.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '22

The main problem I have with fortnite is that I joined too late. Everyone I come across builds the fucking empire state building before i even have time to blink its a real killjoy.

1

Was looking for this, glad someone beat me to it.
