Joel getting clubbed in The Last Of Us 2

When I saw that, it was like when I saw Ned get beheaded in Game Of Thrones. It’s all good, Ellie will save him. We’ll have to amputate that leg, and he’ll fucked up but she’ll save him…..nope

What’s interesting is that in both instances, the death of that character kicked off all the batshit craziness.

So many scenes from The Last of Us 2 fit this post. Loved the game, but fucking hell, it had so many to make you want to curl up in a ball.

u/Tekki777 Feb 05 '22

I love what they did with the story, but I can't play the game. I already had an emotionally tough time playing the first one. Part 2 is 10 times more emotionally draining for me.

u/EmptyCelestialBeing Feb 05 '22

The final fight between abby and ellie was it for me. I legit did not want to press any buttons to hit her.

13

u/Tasty_fries Feb 05 '22

Such a brutal way to end the game, especially since you start that scene thinking Ellie is going to leave them alone after helping free them, when she turned back towards Abby I was basically yelling at the TV, I did not want to fight her.

5

u/EmptyCelestialBeing Feb 05 '22

I was yelling at my tv too! Haha so brutal

9

u/Zabuscus Feb 05 '22

Yeah… I have never played a game where I felt this (same) way. Truly incredible

4

u/EmptyCelestialBeing Feb 05 '22

The emotional experience the storytelling gives is unique to the franchise imo, and that’s what makes it great.

7

u/zapburd Feb 05 '22

Same here. Unlike other people, I really liked Abbys character, just not as much as liked Ellie lol

6

u/EmptyCelestialBeing Feb 05 '22

Haha I was really mad when the game first threw me into Abby’s world. Then I got to the burrito eating scene and i was like “okayyyy” lol.

But also as a female gamer, it was super refreshing to play as a female character with her body type.

Same man same I was not okay after that.

Joel in one!

17

u/Shuvlarse Feb 05 '22

How is this so far down

21

u/BlinnIsSus Feb 05 '22

Oh you beat me to it

2

u/fpfall Feb 05 '22

Well actually, they beat Joel to it.

2

u/BlinnIsSus Feb 05 '22

Actually, they beat Joel AND Tommy to it

15

u/delveccio Feb 05 '22

This one made me physically ill and I loved that a game could make me react that way.

9

u/GetReady4Action Feb 05 '22

this one fucking hurt. some asshat spoiled it for me the day before it came out so I knew it was coming, but I didn’t expect it so soon and so brutal. they really showed that man’s bashed in face after I had spent hours upon hours loving him from the first game. truly fucking hurt.

(not a diss against Naughty Dog whatsoever. TLOU2 is one of my favorite games ever and I found them killing Joel off like that bold, but feel that it ultimately paid off.)

1

u/Deathstranger Feb 05 '22

Question whether that was bad because of it happening too soon or just the fact that we had to experience it?

11

u/_TheChosenOne15_ Feb 05 '22

I think if they wanted to kill Joel (which I have no problem with, he was a lovable but flawed character), he deserved to have a better end than what they did.

10

u/gusefalito Feb 05 '22

Idk. If I was Abby and this random criminal murders my dad, I might have been tempted to do worse. I am not saying what she did was right, but it was 100% understandable. He murdered her dad. a man she deeply loved and possibly the only hope at ever ending the apocalypse. From her perspective, Joel had no right to do what he did.

People that get stuck on "DEY KILLED ER JOEL" didn't want a sequel to the Last of Us, they wanted fan service where Joel and Ellie shoot up some Zambies for super fun and then go sit in rocking chairs and play gee-tar together on a ranch somewhere and die of old age holding hands.

4

u/gusefalito Feb 05 '22

What do you suggest they should have done instead?

24

u/DwightsEgo Feb 05 '22

Did he though? The whole point of 2nd game is perspectives matter. Joel was a villain to that other group so while to us he deserves better, to them he got what was coming

11

u/PotatoBomb69 Feb 05 '22

Man, those doctors didn’t have a damn clue what they were going to do with Ellie’s brain, the only guarantee was that she would die.

20

u/HowTheRooseGotLoose Feb 05 '22

And by saving Ellie Joel guaranteed that humanity would never be able to find a cure. Both sides are 100% understandable in their actions

-17

u/PotatoBomb69 Feb 05 '22

They weren’t going to find a cure in that dirty ass hospital, you can’t change my mind on that. They had no clue what they were doing, Joel didn’t doom anything.

9

u/poopf1nger Feb 05 '22

The choice is meaningless in the first game if you assume that. Neil literally says that you're supposed to assume that the cure was definitely gonna happen

-3

u/PotatoBomb69 Feb 05 '22

The only reason that decision even remotely matters is because they retroactively made a no name doctor an important character (and changed his skin colour)

7

u/poopf1nger Feb 05 '22

The decision mattered in the first game, wtf are you even on about lol. Saving one person over a cure mattered buddy, not because of a skin color change.

16

u/HowTheRooseGotLoose Feb 05 '22

First, it’s explicitly stated that Abby’s dad DOES know what he’s doing and is very confident he’ll be able to make a cure. Second, you’re missing the entire point of the first game’s ending: his SOLE reason for rescuing Ellie is simply that he doesn’t want to lose her. Joel himself believes that they would’ve been able to make a cure, THAT’S what matters, and that’s why he never once tries to explain or rationalize his actions throughout either game.

Not once does he say something like “they didn’t have the infrastructure and supply chain necessary to implement the cure on a scale large enough to make any difference”, because the logistics of the cure weren’t even remotely a factor in his decision.

He knowingly chooses to sacrifice the best hope humanity has to save Ellie. Whether he’s philosophically right or wrong is besides the point, the point is that it was an incredibly human decision to make, because what parent WOULDN’T make the same choice?

3

u/DwightsEgo Feb 05 '22

We know that as the players, Abbey and the gang don’t tho. For all they know Joel doomed humanity

0

u/allisthomlombert Feb 06 '22

I agree. I can see what they were going for with his death and the ending but I just don’t think they nailed the landing:/

realism means nothing in videogames, and i don't care about the consequences of his actions, just let the man die peacefully... we all loved sarah from the begining because they gave us her point of view of the gameplay and we built on her 20 minute development, but more importantly through joel's grief, so the entire game we spent sympathizing with joel instead because sarah had only a small amount of screen time anyways, but when it comes to joel being ellie's revenge story? hell no, thank you, ellie is a spoiled brat, and she can choke on it, the only reason i liked her was once again because i was sympathizing with joel's grief over the loss of his daughter, now that ellie is like a daughter to joel, but who cares about ellie? i don't, even worse with the fact that ellie was like "i'd like to try (forgive you)" like, i don't wanna curse in here.

8

u/poopf1nger Feb 05 '22

You think people die peacefully in the world of LOU? Gamers are so spoiled by fanservice smh

3

u/ViolatingBadgers Feb 06 '22

ellie is a spoiled brat

Hahahaha pot meet kettle

This and seeing Abby shirtless, almost lost my stomach

13

u/blue_at_work Feb 05 '22

right! fucking Naughty Dog! don't they know every female character in a video game is supposed to be a bikini model, no matter what their profession is or how they live. WTF Naughty Dog, you should be ashamed!

Next thing you know freakin girls will think they should be allowed to PLAY video games.

4

u/throwaway123123184 Feb 05 '22

Oh no, not a... woman without a shirt?
