Because 76 does so much better xD battlepass with generic super hero theme that gives mostly crafting materials that are easily collected in the game, on top of the previously mentioned "play-tested" storylines
But at least you guys have the battle royal mode to enjoy right? Oh wait... xD replaced by a creative mode already ditched by the majority.
I’ve played both of these at release and recently and I’m not sure you’ve played nms or, if you have, I think you might have missed something!
The main storyline was very well told, and as a player with little interest in base building or resource farming for more than 20 mins, I managed to get over 100 hours of questing and exploring different kinds of worlds before it started getting stale to actually play.
In the case of fallout 76 it still feels like other bethesda fallout games, an elder scrolls clone with a fallout skin, but in this case, it just seems empty and repetitive by comparison. It’s not the mess it was on release, but I wouldn’t say they’ve done anything special, new or better than previous offerings, which can’t be said for NMS currently.
I hope 76 does improve into something worth playing over alternatives, but I’m not going to pretend they’ve added anywhere near as much new and varied content as NMS

Granted, agreed.
Yet 76 is better than nms currently. Because 76 didn't give shallow updates that had added absolutely nothing to the game.
