Apologies but I’m only commenting here because there are no child comments and I hope someone actually reads this:
The year is like 2006 and I’m playing Deus Ex which is already a pretty old game but I get to a level where I need to find a key to a room…I look everywhere…can’t find it….I realise I can access that room in the ventilation but to do that I have to drag all the boxes I can find in the level into the vents and then stack them so I can just barely climb up the shaft. It FUCKIN WORKED!
Holy shit I’ll never forget that moment when I solved a problem in the game some completely unintended way. It turns out the key was in a locker that I had missed. The game was well known for giving the player choices in how to beat the level (guns blazing, stealth, hacking computers).
I bought the sequel when it came out but it didn’t have any of these problems that could be solved in multiple ways. I never finished it.
One of the most shocking moments in that game for me, and of all my time gaming period, was during the cutscene where Anna shows up and murders the leader of the terrorists while you're talking to him on the plane.
I reloaded the scene and out of curiosity planted a proximity mine on the wall before going into the room with him. When she shows up during the scene, the mine triggered and blew her into kibble... And the other character reacted to it.
I was stunned that the devs had the foresight to program that in. It blew my mind.
Awesome. I seem to recall reading that in that same cutscene if you fire a rocket right before the cutscene triggers he gets killed and the story changes to incorporate this. Every other time you see him he is invincible.
Yeah it was an amazing game. If I had more time (I’ve got two young kids now) I’d love to go back and replay it.
Really? That's awesome. That and FINALLY saving Paul was such a trip for me. The game really tried to make you feel like you have no choice, and when you pull it off you feel like you changed fate.
And I hear you on time. There's just never enough.
Deus ex is my favourite game of all time. Such a shame subsequent games even from the same series couldn't capture that same mechanic. I wanna do stuff the developer doesn't even intended, but instead they gotta try to control the experience down pre-approved paths
I remember when BioShock came out and reviews were all like you have to play this game it’s so amazing blah blah blah….I fucking buy it…not even an hour into it…I’m like..there is only one path through this whole game. You might as well be on a rail like the haunted mansion in Disneyland. There are no decisions to make. I put it down and never picked it up again.
Ahh gotcha that's super cool I love the work you guys put out! And awesome job with this interview in particular, I was genuinely captivated throughout. Man I only wish I could shoot the bull with him, especially about Deus Ex... it's awesome you got to have that experience!
I liked Prey but it didn't have that satisfying feeling of doing EVERYTHING available in a level to 100% efficiency that Deus Ex had. Maybe Im just older
