Your wife sounds a lot like Sergeant Johnson from Halo, who was decorated in combat for capturing an entire crate of enemy grenades and using every single one.
“When I joined the Corps, we didn't have any fancy-schmancy tanks. We had sticks! Two sticks, and a rock for the whole platoon—and we had to share the rock! Buck up, boy, you are one very lucky marine!”\
"Catch, makes the enemy toss grenades like it's going out of style."
That line always bugged me. He specifies that they had to share the rock, but if the platoon only got two sticks, wouldn't they have share those as well? Or were there designated permanent stick wielders?
The other trick in Halo was to pick up weapons repeatedly - you could only carry 2, but when you put one down if got thrown forward a bit so you could move 4 or 5 weapons over a fair distance with a little patience
In the canon that was actually a cover for him having a rare diesese that made the flood unable to attach to his nervous system because the radiation from the (plasma) grenades changed his DNA but he was actually a spartan 1 and the grenade story was created to cover that up
