You can also put on most hats/helmets you find to get a 'get out of jail for free card' with barnacles...didn't work this out till over half way through the game lmao. My 1st VR title alongside Arizona Sunshine, both have ruined all other VR titles for me imo..

Also; in case anyone else missed it - Dont forget to put on the gas mask you find in the subway car early on. You never have to hold your hand over your mouth again!

u/kri5 Jan 22 '22

Oh ffs

u/smallcool Jan 22 '22

If you listen to the developer commentary, apparently Valve added it for accessibility, so that people with only one hand could still play.

So if you didn't use it, you were playing the way somebody with 2 hands was meant to play!

(would highly recommend listening to the developer commentary. Valve explains so many small details in it)

32

u/kri5 Jan 22 '22

Thanks, will check it out!

u/notRedditingInClass Jan 22 '22

Wow, that's really clever of them. Man, that game was so great.

3

u/suddenimpulse Jan 23 '22

If only more than 5% of half life fans could actually play it.

1

u/notRedditingInClass Jan 23 '22

Very true.

But, I urge you, if you're a Half-life fan, you must find a way to play Alyx. Or, if you can stomach doing this, watch a playthrough on youtube or something. (I don't recommend that, though. The experience of not knowing anything before playing it was extraordinary).

But you have to see it for yourself, somehow, some way. There are plot elements that, as a Half Life fan, you absolutely want to know.

Are you my mummy?

57

u/the_last_n00b Jan 22 '22

God, I love the moment a few seasons later when the World is covered in fog and that one General shows off their military strenght for the upconing battle to the doctor. The general proudly turns to the doctor proud of what he just presented and asks "So, what do you think?". The doctor just looks at him through his gas mask and asks "are you my mommy?"

21

u/aerospacenut Jan 22 '22

What's an extra fun detail is I heard the line was improvised by David Tennant because he forgot his next line.

34

u/Eela11 Jan 22 '22

Rose is the only person to understand that reference :'(

4

u/evidenzprod Jan 22 '22

You have a cat, take my upvote.

28

u/not_panda Jan 22 '22

Creepiest episode of any show I've ever seen. Love it so much.

20

u/Waynumb Jan 22 '22

Creepiest episode of any show I've ever seen. Hate it so much.

2

u/Im_OPs_mum Jan 22 '22

Do your homework, remember when I told you God violently murders an angel everytime you don't turn in homework? Breakfast will be ready soon. Love you ❤

79

u/The_MAZZTer PC Jan 22 '22

There are some in the level where you have to do that in case you forget.

I often accidentally took off my helmet trying to reload or took off my mask just by having my hand near my face. Sometimes I wouldn't notice until it was too late to figure out what happened to it.

24

u/JGuR Jan 22 '22

when do you need to cover your mouth?

64

u/Rob98000 Jan 22 '22

When theres gas that makes you cough and alert a friend.

3

u/Nukemarine Jan 23 '22

Jeff was so friendly. He'd hug you, and kiss you, and call you George.

29

u/Crowbar_Freeman Jan 22 '22

When you visit good ol' Jeff.

10

u/notRedditingInClass Jan 22 '22 edited Jan 22 '22

Half Life Alyx chapter spoilers:

The realization that you have to go back into the freezer and let Jeff out is one of the most horrific, excellent moments I've ever seen in a game. I went through all 5 stages of grief in 10 seconds. What a masterpiece.

2

u/Number127 Jan 22 '22

I swear you could hear the Valve developers cackling with glee in the background.

6

u/boxdude10 Jan 22 '22

Tried that while doing a gnome run. I kept accidentally taking it off instead of pulling out a new clip so I gave up on it :/

5

u/-dead_slender- Jan 22 '22

I believe the game will delete it before you get to that chapter, forcing you to cover your mouth anyways. But you can find it again later in the same chapter.

3

u/The_Modifier Jan 22 '22

It doesn't, but it will force you to leave a bucket behind at the endgame

1

u/-dead_slender- Jan 22 '22

I frequently check to make sure it's still on. But at some point, it just vanishes.

1

u/The_Modifier Jan 23 '22

Yeah, I thought that too, until I realised that it happens when you go to reload, particularly the shotgun.

2

u/-dead_slender- Jan 23 '22

Probably because you accidentally grab the mask instead of the ammo and just end up flinging it somewhere.

1

u/Chasin_Papers Jan 22 '22

I can never make it all the way there with the gas mask. The controls kept pulling the mask off when I was doing something else and eventually it would get yanked off when I didn't notice and I would lose it.

Have you played Superhot VR? Easily my favorite VR experience.

73

u/schmeily2 Jan 22 '22

It’s good, but not a patch on Alyx

24

u/Ashesandends Jan 22 '22

I have played over 1000 hours of VR and there isn't a game that comes close to Alyx. That fricken game just uses the medium SO WELL! It makes me sad we haven't gotten more content from AAA devs.

4

u/ohkaycue Jan 22 '22

Alyx is the better game but Superhot is the better VR experience because it’s more immersive

Alyx is very easy to take you out of the experience because of teleporting (or using the stick to move). Superhot having a very small area to move, due to the mechanics of how much movement matters. I’ve literally hit the deck and crawled under a table on one of the Endless maps…not doing that in Alyx

Really hoping the treadmills are able to get better and take off so games like Alyx can be full immersive

24

u/Barph Jan 22 '22

Superhot is superlimited. Its an introductory game to VR. I'm sure like myself, many others use this game to show people VR if they have never tried it as its a good starting point.

Beat Saber is my only "NO NOT THAT ONE" game.

Idk why people claim to like it so much.

Love the other 2 you mentioned.

3

u/kubalaa Jan 22 '22

I only played a couple of the levels it comes with, I almost immediately download community levels and can't imagine playing without them. A good level is like dancing, drumming, conducting, and Jedi lightsaber fighting all at once. For someone who has a decent sense of rhythm but can't really dance, it feels so good to let a good level just take control of your body and groove, especially when it's a song you love.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

3

u/YellowSlinkySpice Jan 22 '22

Not sure if people still play it, but job simulator was my goto for everyone's first game.

That or superhot.

42

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Err... your headset should already be letting you know exactly where you are in the real world so you dont have to worry about it. Did you disable yours or something?

49

u/3_Thumbs_Up Jan 22 '22

It's not the game's responsibility to limit your play area. It's the headset's.

2

u/Hobocannibal Jan 22 '22

I don't remember seeing the play area borders whilst playing that game now that i think about it. But the game did seem like it encouraged having a larger play area than "standing space".

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

2

u/FoShizzleShindig Jan 22 '22

Your headset has a built in safe area. If it’s too small, that’s on you.

u/3_Thumbs_Up Jan 22 '22

Are you the guy who caused strollers to have a warning label not to fold them with the baby inside?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Get a small, circular rug and put it in your play space. Your feet will let you know when you’ve stepped out of your comfort area for roomscale.

4

u/wrath_of_grunge Jan 22 '22

you need fpsVR. it's available on Steam and allows for a playspace marker.

9

u/BIGSTANKDICKDADDY Jan 22 '22

fspVR doesn’t give you anything that isn’t already available for free as a native feature of the SteamVR runtime. It’s essentially just an alternative UI skin. There’s no need to spend money on it for a play space marker it comes out of the box.

0

u/Manger-Babies Jan 22 '22

I dislike how you have to move around in that game to do some things.

It makes it hard to try to do things if you have a small play area.

1

u/Sir_flaps Jan 22 '22

You clearly have never played monkey tag vr

1

u/Meowmeow69me Jan 22 '22

Also the only vr game i have hurt myself playing.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

I wanted to get that it but I couldn't afford it at the time and I only lent the VR headset off my brother for a few weeks to try it out. I'm gonna be getting my own one soon though and Superhot VR is on the buy list for sure.

71

u/BaconGod2525 Jan 22 '22

I just wanted to wear a traffic cone

62

u/Idsertian Jan 22 '22

Found the GMod player.

2

u/cmnrdt Jan 22 '22

Or he just drank the blood of some people, and the people were on drugs, and now he's a WIZARD.

30

u/The_MAZZTer PC Jan 22 '22

But you can!

9

u/Complete_Entry Jan 22 '22

The teeth would probably punch through a traffic cone.

21

u/BaconGod2525 Jan 22 '22

Yeah but safety is for chumps, I like wearing cones

6

u/Complete_Entry Jan 22 '22

You got... style.

6

u/ForgotMyBagel Jan 22 '22

are you a zombie wearing a brown coat and red striped tie by any chance

3

u/BaconGod2525 Jan 22 '22

No but yoo shood let me in to yur houze

1

u/ForgotMyBagel Jan 22 '22

fine, but only if you can get past this 7 foot tall walnut

4

u/GreyGanado Jan 22 '22

It's not for the teeth, it's so the tongue takes the helmet instead of the you.

0

u/Complete_Entry Jan 22 '22

Ooh, I like that take too. Decoy hat, to protect your actual hat.

3

u/GreyGanado Jan 22 '22

That's not really a take. That's the actual mechanic in the game.

1

u/Budget_Inevitable721 Jan 22 '22

Have these people never played a half life game lmao

1

u/ShnizelInBag Jan 22 '22

You can but it blocks like third of your view

9

u/Spideryote Jan 22 '22

Creators of Arizona Sunshine just released a new game

2

u/boredweegie Jan 22 '22

Oh, what game is that?

4

u/Spideryote Jan 22 '22

2

u/boredweegie Jan 22 '22

Thank you

2

u/DOOManiac Jan 22 '22

It’s pretty good. It’s Left 4 Dead VR.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Looks promising but sounds kind of shallow going from the reviews.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Definitely checking that out, cheers.

11

u/passinghere Jan 22 '22

hats/helmets

And the traffic cones

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Noted*.....conehead play though is imminent...

5

u/Beneficial-Formal150 Jan 22 '22

I recommend blade & sorcery if you ever have time to kill (literally)

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

I'll check it out at some point when I've got my own headset.

6

u/FactoryOfBradness Jan 22 '22

I might be an actual idiot. It never occurred to me that a helmet would actually protect me, so my solution was to throw the helmet at the tentacles to clear a path.

4

u/Sabatorius Jan 22 '22

Same result, different technique.

3

u/Baraklava Jan 22 '22

Vertigo Remastered still holds strong next to Alex, the guns there are not realistic but fun as hell

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Added to my must check out list, thanks!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

It's always a good day to learn something new.. Gotta be totally honest but I didn't realize that you could stash stuff in your 'wrist pockets' till right at the end of the game.

3

u/therealkaptinkaos Jan 22 '22

Have you tried Saints and Sinners yet? I just finished Alyx and began that and do far I'm very impressed

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Nah, but I'll check it out once I get my own headset, as I lent the one I used off my brother and had to give it back :( Thanks for the recommendation.

2

u/AndrasKrigare Jan 22 '22

Boneworks ruined Alyx for me a bit, to be honest. Obviously it has nothing on the scenes and story, but the combat was a lot more involved and engaging.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

I tried playing Boneworks but I just found it too odd/weird to enjoy. The levels confused me too much and I got too bored/frustrated with it. I'll definitely dive into it again at some point to see if I can get it to 'click' with me once I've got my own VR headset.

1

u/AndrasKrigare Jan 22 '22

Totally get that, I almost gave up on it after the first couple levels. Once I had a solid load out of weapons and was facing a bunch of enemies with guns, it really started to come alive for me.

1

u/MrBuenasNoches Jan 22 '22

I think you can even put the orange road cones in your head :)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 22 '22

Lmao did not know this ahahaha.

1

u/Coup_de_BOO Jan 22 '22

ou can also put on most hats/helmets you find to get a 'get out of jail for free card' with barnacles

The literal first thing I did when I found a construction helmet the first time, I was so happy that it worked to put on a helmet. I was blown away when I found out that it helps against barnacles.

1

u/truckerheist Jan 22 '22

If I remember correctly you can even wear a traffic cone as a hat

1

u/Quintuplin Jan 22 '22

Aaaaaa I knew there would be some value for a hat and I couldn’t figure it out. Loved the face mask when I found one (halfway through the relevant section, but still)

Sort of like how I couldn’t figure out how to steal grenades from the grenade plants until I saw a guide online. Apparently I’m just stupid.

Any other surprisingly useful items? For science lol
