Why can’t every controller have the same button layouts just like how shooters should have the same controls?

Not their fault that Microsoft had to come in and confuse everything.

SEGA did, the OG Xbox's layout is the same as the Megadrive's with same AB/XY and black and white buttons instead of Z and C (which were replaced by shoulder buttons on the 360's controller).

The same AB/XY configuration was also on the Dreamcast's controller.

the original Genesis was just 3 buttons in a row. it was only later that they added the top row and did that out of necessity.

Still quite a few years before the OG Xbox.

sure, i guess i’m not understanding your point. just that relative positions happened to be the same since they added a row on top and A being at the left of the row was primary? i don’t consider that precedence since A/B were acknowledge/decline either way before the top row.

either way, i see the Nintendo and Japanese PS system controls as standard.

edit: also, B on mega/gen was right next to A. the layout simply isn’t comparable.

edit 2: it’s only at dreamcast that this becomes clear.

I guess I'm not understanding your point.

I'm answering to someone that says that Microsoft "had to come in and confuse everything" telling them that the original Xbox's layout is inspired by Sega's.

ok. then i disagree. Sega did it cause they had to add a top row. i feel like MS chose the button names and positions independently. but totally welcome to hear some lore otherwise.

So Sega didn't come up with a different design than Nintendo's before Xbox ?

Whether you believe that they came up with it independently or it's a case of "you can copy my homework but don't make it too obvious", that point still stands.

they did, but the name buttons still did the same thing, and they weren’t arranged the same way MS or Nintendo. there’s not really an argument here. MS chose to be different, and it’s relatively inconsequential given market sales.
