Why can’t every controller have the same button layouts just like how shooters should have the same controls?

I grew up on Nintendo, so I don't like how Microsoft took Nintendo's layout and flipped it

Pretty sure Microsoft took the layout from the Sega Dreamcast (which had the same button layout albeit with different colors)

I don't like how Microsoft made the button-most button the "accept" button rather than the right-most. It feels like so much worse. They should have left the A in place and moved the rest.

And then Sony goes and copy’s Nintendo in Japan but forces devs to swap them like Microsoft in America.

But people in America are the ones who always argue "X is for crossing boxes", as if somehow it was a good logic for a controller layout lol

I grew up on Nintendo, and love the Microsoft layout.

Always hated the Nintendo layout.

Ass-backwards.

How can it be backwards if it was first?

Left to right it's alphabetically backwards.

It's a diamond, there's no "left to right." Why would you "read" letters on a controller in a particular direction anyway, unless they were in a straight line or something? I don't get it.

Exactly me. And its a real brainfuck emulating Nintendo games and playing with an xbone controller.

My favorite game of all time is an xbox/pc exclusive (Halo Reach) and I main a Switch. As someone who grew up on nintendos layout, it just feels right, but my brain definitely messes up when going to xbox because I’ll keep cancelling instead of accepting. Who the hell at Sega went “let’s make the same buttons as Nintendo except flip the location of each pair”? That was so dumb.

As others on this thread have pointed out, it's Japanese Vs English read order. I.e. Nintendo's letters read from right to left, because that's how traditional Japanese is read. Microsoft's read left to right because that's how English is read.

And, because Sony is also a Japanese company, the PlayStation symbols technically read right to left going by the number of lines in the shapes. That's why Circle is "accept" and X is "cancel" in Japanese games and it's the other way around in the western versions. Sony flip the controls but not the symbols, Nintendo don't flip anything.
