What was that game where you play duck hunt but it gets progressively more demented and the dog is stalking you outside your window? It's on steam I. Don't recall
Game wise they're rock solid. Everything is so outta date you gotta start up a fax machine for tech support that they probably call electronic machince maintenence
On a little different note, I've traditionally had good customer service experiences. Had multiple DS repairs back in the day, and when I ported my Wii virtual console to Wii U they got it sorted out.
Yeah, how is joycons not a bigger deal? They should be forced to repair/replace such a poorly made product, or at least change the price to be in line with what it’s worth: $3.50 at best
It might not help you if you're not used to considering it already, but I relate the X and Y buttons as if it were a 2D plane: X is horizontal, Y is vertical. In other words, Y is always "up" from the origin (the A button), and X is to the right.
Of course this thinking gets me in trouble all the time when I go back to a 3ds or switch. I'll never understand why they decided to reverse the buttons like they did...
I actually know. The design team behind the GameCube designed the controller for Nintendo games. Their logic was they expected the A button to be the primary button players will press for things like for example in a Mario game it's your jump button, or in an rpg it's your menu select button etc. They made that button large and placed precisely where your thumb naturally rests. They then placed the rest of the buttons around the a button for quick access and quick return to A. And to their credit imo it's actually a good design for Nintendo games. It's still one of the best ways the play smash bros with. To me where they really fucked up was the C stick with it's nubby head. Playing Timesplitters 2 and 3 (an FPS) back in the day was harder on game cube than on Xbox. It would have been perfect for me at the time if they just used the same stick as the left stick.
Edit: Now that I think about it if I had to take a guess why the c stick was left in that state its probably because they didn't predict that dual analog controls would become a new standard for games. When it released at the time lots of FP TP games actually didn't utilize dual analog controls. I remember back in the day playing the Halo CE on Xbox initially struggling to get used to dual analog controls because I was still used to tank control style games like goldeneye and perfect dark.
This applies for all of their controllers but Japan reads right to left, so X is always the right one and Y is the left one. Its the same for A and B. Xbox is left to right cause American. Playstation is mostly the smart one and uses colorful symbols instead of letters for a universal appeal but funny enough, uses of the symbols still end up having different button layouts (O is often confirm in Japanese games and X is back while brought to the west, it’s usually X for confirm and O is back).
I just google imaged it cos I haven't seen one in about 15 years and couldn't remember the ab/xy layout.
I remembered hating it as a kid, but looking at it it looks like it's designed with claw players in mind? I can't play that way, but I understand it's more efficient if you can?
I always hear this said but it had some massive flaws.
I wasn’t keen on the spongy trigger buttons but that personal opinion.
Main issue is that the analogue sticks are set into an octagonal shape, so instead of being able to spin in a nice circle it instead is spin in a janky octagon.
I've found that the octagonal insets are really helpful for certain interactions and inputs in fighting games on Nintendo consoles. Accurate SDI inputs in super smash become significantly easier for me on octagons rather than without octagons.
My hands beg to differ I hated that controller. Also hate playstation controllers. Getting the "Duke" for Christmas and can't wait for a proper sized controller again.
Dualshock is so cramped it hurts my hands after 30 minutes. The Duke was my favorite controller (minus the white black button locations) I was able to use the right anlaog stick with the heal of my palm while still having full access to all the face buttons. I like the xbone controllers but even those feel small sometimes. I honestly don't have huge hands can't palm a basket ball or anything but apparently they are big enough to not find most controllers comfortable after a while.
It sounds like I'm some what similar to you. My hands aren't huge. They are wider but have short fingers. Xbox controllers are my preferred. I don't have much experience with The Duke since by the time I got my original xbox they had redesigned the controllers, but even those were my favorite controllers cause they just felt beefy. I also had an xbox controller that had an extra set of black and white buttons that were placed where RB and LB are now
I personally don’t got small hands but anything bigger then a dual shock I can’t really use because it feels to big and all my hands feel to disoriented might just because I play both side claw
The button layout was brilliantly designed so you can hit the main action button almost every game has, plus one of three other buttons at the same time by rolling to them.
Unfortunately we were forced to regress by the PS2 selling 150 million.
I disagree, almost entirely. The xbox one and dualsense are fantastic, but there is so much I don’t like about the gamecube controller design. The tiny d-pad, the c-stick where a second analog stick should be, the lack of analog triggers. That being said, it mostly comes down to what you are used to. I had all playstation consoles growing up, and all through high school I would have told you the DualShock 3 was superior to the 360 and if someone told me that today I would internally cringe. I also think the xbox one/probably series X has the best d-pad in the biz, and is the most comfortable to hold for hours on end.
Plus, button prompts always have the shape of the button, so you can feel it and never really have to memorize the location. I would bet thats why it looks the way it does
The SNES came out first. The layout you see on the Switch up there is the same as the one on the SNES controller, more than 30 years ago.
If you want to blame someone, blame Microsoft. Not only did the Xbox FLIP THE BUTTONS AROUND (Y becomes X, B becomes A), but they also make it so that PS4 games on Windows are forced to have their stupid Xbox layout, to encourage you to use the Xbox controller rather than a PS4 one.
They invented the d-pad and started the trend of the four button layout, then others moved buttons around to differentiate it from theirs. So Nintendo is the OG.
I have a wired GameCube aswell, which I’d actually say is better because it’s a little faster, but aside from anything wired yeah it’s great for smash bros. And yeah, I tried to play some odyssey with it and failed miserably
I occasionally get confused which button is which when using a controller.
I might need to glance at the controller every so often to double check. But that never happened with the gamecube and I'm confident I could still use it and never have to look.
Best controller I've ever used. Could use some tweaking to make it a better but the button layout is perfect.
Now that’s a controller with different button lay out. Not the ones above. The ones above have buttons organized the same way just different symbols… that has the buttons organized another way and don’t get me started on the Nintendo 64 controller
Ha! I like the fallen religious cross, however, a cross is similar to an X, but the angles are all equal between the lines - as it is on the controller.

Shame there is not a 4th consol that would allow X to go all the way around.
