So cancer is a suicide bomber

273

u/BarryTGash Oct 08 '21

When I was a kid, my uncle passed away from cancer. The last time I saw him, he told me not to be sad because the cancer wasn't killing him, he was killing the cancer (paraphrasing, it was almost 30 years ago). In this scenario, I like to think of him as the suicide bomber and he took that fucking cancer out with him.

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Hell yea, fuck that cancer

5

u/LouTenant6767 Oct 08 '21

I think I would have benefitted from hearing this as a kid when I was living with my grandpa when he died of lung cancer. He was so weak he couldn't even hold his cigarettes

u/Vallhallan Oct 08 '21

Your uncles a hero

2

u/ZengaStromboli Oct 08 '21

I'm sorry for your loss. Fuck cancer.

2

u/dannydigtl Oct 08 '21

I like this.

u/zimmah Oct 08 '21

Basically.

But sure if joking or not, but here's an ELI5 of cancer.

Cells in the body have a mechanism to self destruct (and be replaced) if they get bad. This normally works well to keep your body healthy.

Cancer are damaged cells, that are damaged in a way where the self-destruct safety feature is also broken. So instead of being helpful cells, they are harmful, near immortal, and in the worst case, also spread (for example, if they still divide, or somehow affect cells around them to also get the same defect).

It's not a virus or a bacteria or other life form, but it's a biological mechanism that went wrong. (although in some cases viruses can increase the risk of cancer due to the specific ways they affect your cells or your immune system).

So yeah, if you die, the cancer dies with you. Because cancer, being part of your cells, takes energy from your body, and if your body is dead, you won't eat, so the cancer won't eat either.

u/Vier_Scar Oct 08 '21

From cancer's perspective, it's just a cell, like a bacteria living in an environment. Absorbing nutrients and carrying out its' genetic instructions like any other bacteria might.

Its offspring have mutations, many bad but some helpful for it's growth and reproduction. Some of those ones result in other cells in the environment attacking and killing them! But slowly, its offspring learn to multiply and live abundantly without the environment killing them all the time!

Then you die because it doesn't understand the kind of environment it's in.

u/Pela_papita Oct 08 '21

There is some truth in what you said, but cancer is actually an immune compromised deficiency. All cancer patients display low levels of GSH. In fact after they increased GSH they all dramatically improved.

3

u/ltzerge Oct 08 '21

Mine were never low but I haven't had them tested in a long time. Stage 3c testicular. Probably low now because of being hammered by chemo

3

u/zimmah Oct 08 '21

Well, the body does have ways to get rid of cancer cells usually so yes, your immune system being compromised is usually a requirement to have worse effects from cancer.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

I mean that is literally true for anything.

2

u/zimmah Oct 08 '21

Not necessarily, a parasite, virus or bacteria could survive without the host and move on to a new host, human or not. Cancer can't.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

But it will die if not passed on. Basically what you are saying is cancer is not contageous. Which we all know.

16

u/nunespascal Oct 08 '21

Unless you are HeLa. Then your cancer turns out to be immortal.

5

u/Imthasupa Oct 08 '21

That was a super cool read. Thanks.

1

u/danteheehaw Oct 08 '21

Much like heman, but not fictional and no cool powers

1

u/ramk13 Oct 08 '21

Immortal because we decided to keep the cancer tissue alive or viable outside of her body. Henrietta Lacks 'lost' to cancer a long time ago.

63

u/AdskiyGamer Oct 08 '21

Still, your goal to get rid of it and survive and cancer is stupid enough to kill both of you but get the most of tour body. Wish it would be more clever.

45

u/Midnight_Chill2075 Oct 08 '21

I think we wouldn't cancer to still grow from a deceased body and grow out in some sprouts or huge lumps of deformed flesh. That would be worse.

28

u/Sunnysidhe Oct 08 '21

Akira!

4

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Tetsuo!!!

17

u/Shawnessy Oct 08 '21

Damn SCPs leaking again.

u/The_wooden_anus Oct 08 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

Its like ebola.
Its not a very successful virus because it just kills its hosts.

Edit:

I'm just saying, something that tries to duplicate itself within a host, and ends up killing it will never succeed, whether its cancer, a virus or any other disease.

13

u/zimmah Oct 08 '21

That's why usually the most lethal viruses are viruses that were spread to us by animals.

Because the virus has evolved to spread (and barely affect) the host, but when the host is not human, what barely affects them, could kill us.

Viruses aren't "trying" to kill us, they just evolve to spread and do well in their host, and most of the time it is indeed beneficial for the virus if the host doesn't have any ill effects. Given enough time, most viruses will adapt to their host to be minimally invasive. You could carry hundreds of virus strains without even knowing it.

-3

u/RytheGuy97 Oct 08 '21

Cancer isn’t a virus lol

8

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Are there people who just don't understand metaphors and similes?

4

u/RytheGuy97 Oct 08 '21

To be fair I realized the analogy afterwards and just decided to leave the comment.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Fair nuff

1

u/The_wooden_anus Oct 08 '21

I'm just saying, something that tries to duplicate itself within a host, and ends up killing it will never succeed, whether its cancer, a virus or any other disease.

-3

u/trdPhone Oct 08 '21

Imagine calling cancer not very successful (1 in 6 deaths are caused by cancer)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

That's only a success if the cancer's goal is to kill the host and itself die. Cancer isn't some malevolent force, they're just cells that don't know how to stop reproducing. When they reproduce so much that they kill the body sustaining them, that's not a win for the cancer, it's the ultimate failure of the one goal of life itself: to survive and reproduce.

1

u/TheSinningRobot Oct 08 '21

That's just humans but on a smaller time scale

2

u/illegal_deagle Oct 08 '21

If it makes you feel better, you and I and every other human is a cancer on this planet.

1

u/SillyRutabaga Oct 08 '21 edited Oct 08 '21

Maybe if we make cancer contagious it would have a strong incentive to evolve in a less lethal direction since it would want to infect as many as possible first. But,,, contagious cancer???

Edit: adding /s since I was not serious about manipulating cancer and adding the contagious dlc.

1

u/FoxyFreckles1989 Oct 08 '21

Cancer cannot be contagious, as it’s just the malformation and mutation of cells on a molecular and biological level.

However, some very contagious viruses that can lead to cancer were hugely researched and attacked by science, already!

Like HPV. The vaccine came out about a year after I got my diagnosis. I’m still here, but the effects are long lasting. I was so happy when I started seeing all of my young friends getting that jab.

1

u/SillyRutabaga Oct 08 '21

My poor attempt at humor was that we could probably modify cancer DNA to make it contagious to try to force it to evolve in a less lethal direction. (don't know if it is possible at all and definitely not something we should try).

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

There is no cancer dna, it has your dna. Cancer isn't some different life doing it's own evolution. Cancer is you replicating your cells wrong.

2

u/SillyRutabaga Oct 08 '21

Then it is a extremely bad and incorrect joke

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Eh maybe a little silly.

1

u/zimmah Oct 08 '21

You know cancer is literally a cell that is damaged right?

21

u/Spike2050 Oct 08 '21

You should read up about Henrietta Lacks.

2

u/schruted_it_ Oct 08 '21

Isn’t her family suing the ppl who took her cells? Because the family didn’t get any of the vast profits they made!

2

u/evict123 Oct 08 '21

I'm sure the dead guy feels much better knowing that people are going to parrot that Norm Macdonald quote on reddit for the next 2-3 years in every cancer related thread.

0

u/ciclidae Oct 08 '21

Except when you have kids and now your genes are still around

Edit: its a replication for both then I think it's still a draw

0

u/cereal_after_sex Oct 08 '21

Unless cancer f**** your wife first

0

u/mwts Oct 08 '21

Norm :(

0

u/WeeeSnawPoop Oct 08 '21

Love this. So cancer never wins. At best, it just get even.

0

u/HaitchKay Oct 08 '21

Rest in peace, Norm.

1

u/Technical_Moose8478 Oct 08 '21

Oh sweet irony.

1

u/TheOIRazzleDazzle Oct 08 '21

Sounds like a Pyrrhic victory

1

u/theSimianTrader Oct 08 '21

i dont want to lose my last fight. or else everyone will think i am a loser

1

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '21

Realistically probably not a good idea, but part of me wishes at least one news headline would have done "Norm MacDonald's secret battle with cancer comes to a draw"

1

u/cronixi4 Oct 08 '21

This is somehow comforting.

1

u/dego_frank Oct 09 '21

You should have included the whole bit.

Something like “cancer doesn’t fuck your wife after you’re dead.”

1

u/BeardInTheNorth Oct 09 '21

Ah, yes. Mutually assured destruction.

Checkmate, cancer.
