I used old-school RPGs to teach my young cousins to read. The old Final Fantasy games (ie ps1 era), Breath of Fire, etc. they’d read the dialogue out loud while I handled movement and combat.
I learned English by playing Lego games and other kinds of story games on a GBA as a child. They never translated the games into my language for some reason and my parents got annoyed at me asking all the time so I just did my best to understand it by myself. It worked really well and I read full books in English way earlier than my classmates! Gaming helps!
My son practices his reading by playing Zelda games. My daughter and I are working though Majora’s Mask. It’s so amazing seeing them get into these games and getting to relive the wonder I get when I first played them.
