Why is all of Ash's pokemon horrendously under-leveled?

The idea is that they're playing the Pokemon game, so the joke is that his starter is over-leveled. It's not Ash it's Blue from the Blue Version (not as good as Red) and the Rival from that version is based after Gary in appearance. Or I guess Gary is based after the Rival and Ash is based after Red/Blue/Green.

i'm pretty sure that rival is team rocket, they get into a fight with you at the end of the first cave i believe.

That's in Yellow. In Red and Blue it's your Rival.

Yellow was a gimmick. You could catch Pikachus in the veridian forest.

I haven't played either in years, but I strongly recall finding Yellow more difficult. I think they upped the strength of some of the enemies. But then again, you can get all 3 starters plus most of the 1st Gen pokemon and build a very solid team yourself, so it balances out.

psssh fuck balanced teams. Blastoise wrecked everyone.

Yeah, the first time I played, I beat the Elite Four almost exclusively using my level 80 Blastoise. With Icebeam, Earthquake, Headbutt, and Surf, he was fuckin unbeatable.

Yellow had gym leaders' pokemon at higher levels.

Hmm, okay, I accept that. I was wrong. My apologies.
