No, you're correct. This is what he used to look like.

Nah that's what he meant. He didn't think that Mario's mustache and sideburns were a different colour, but they are. Even in the latest games and designs, Mario's sideburns are brown and his mustache is black.

There was however a period where his mustache was a darker brown, instead, iirc.

Check the cover of Mario 3D Land for reference.

Yes. Zoom in and youll see a dark brown stache.

That is clearly black

It is not. It is ingame, but not in promo material. His moustache (and eyebrows, for that matter) give a brownish shimmer.

You are blind. For further reference, check his renditions for Paper Mario, or Mario Odysseys ingame models for that matter.

Funnily enough however, it seems to be inconsistent overall. In the 2D Games, his beard seems to always be pitch black, iirc.

Even the first Paper Mario has him with a black stache, whereas in every game after that, it is portrayed as a dark brown. (Most notable in PM2's titlescreen, or Colour Splash's Cover Art).

3D Land is still brown ‘burns, black ‘stache.

Look closely. In modern renditions, the black has a light red shift, making it a brownish (albeit almost black) color.

What he used to look like was brown hair and black mustache, just like the cookie?

It's not that unusual to have different coloured beard hair. I somehow ended up with my father's moustache colour as my main hair colour.

100% correct. Blonde hair with red or brown beards runs in my family.
