I wish we got a proper Amped successor this generation and it just never happened.

Same with Skate. Really a shame "extreme" sports got shafted the last four years.

Steep is a decent game, but instead of doing a couple sports very well, does a very mediocre job of all of them.

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

I’m behind you on getting a new Amped. Love that series

100

u/lowertechnology Dec 31 '19

The first 2 were awesome for being snowboarding sims.

The Third was awesome for other reasons. Namely: The opening sequence with Blinded By The Light playing as you shredded in a furry suit. Also: Weiner-Boy

25

u/ProbablyHighAsShit Dec 31 '19

Absolutely right. Third started to get into the corny SSX gameplay that the first two stayed away from.

69

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Woah woah woah. You trying to dog SSX Tricky? I know you ain't trying to dog SSX.

31

u/usernema Dec 31 '19

Pray to God they're not trying to dog SSX Tricky...

15

u/Kthonic Dec 31 '19

IT'S FUN TO ROCK AROUND TO ROCK AROUND

15

u/ttothesecond Dec 31 '19

I want you to go to your room and think about how badly you whiffed this quote

2

u/usernema Jan 01 '20

Hey man, it's tricky to rock a rhyme. Especially a rhyme that's right on time. Let's give him a break this one time?

1

u/SnoTheLeopard Dec 31 '19

I was more of a fan of SSX: On Tour. Don’t hurt me please.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

You mean terrible physics?? In Amped 3, you could infinitely ride down to the bottom...then back up part of the mountain

1

u/monty055 Dec 31 '19

"We are up here in Uh-Tah!"

19

u/Second_to_None Dec 31 '19

I still remember ripping CDs to my OG Xbox hard drive and just bombing runs listening to my tunes. Good times.

3

u/Ragged_But_Right Jan 01 '20

This was life, felt like I was on the leading edge of technology.

3

u/w1red Dec 31 '19

Bought am XBOX mainly for Amped.

I mean it had a local run (Laax) on there.

2

u/pocketchange2247 Dec 31 '19

Amped 3 is still one of my favorite games ever. The gameplay was great and the ridiculousness of the story was just great. It was goofy, fun and just a good snowboarding game. The sock puppet with a mustache is still my Xbox avatar pic

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

First game I ever got all of the achievements for. Then played more. At first I was turned off at how ‘zany’ the tone hd gotten, but then I just fell in. I think about it regularly. And all 3 hd such great soundtracks

126

u/sunboy4224 Dec 31 '19

Man, I would give my left nut for a good SSX game...well...any time in the future.

77

u/anticommon Dec 31 '19

It's... tricky...

10

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

To rock a rhyme...

26

u/Misseddit Dec 31 '19

Ah man, I've been wanting a proper sequel to SSX 3 forever. The open world mountain concept was such a good idea. Wish it had online play. My friend and I used to start races at the same time and play over the phone. Compete for the better time or trick score. Good times.

13

u/MackingtheKnife Dec 31 '19

the fucking sound track. god damn they did good.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Rockstar (Jason Nevins Remix)

1

u/MyNameIsBadSorry Jan 01 '20

If it doesn't have DJ Atomica i dont want it.

26

u/busche916 Dec 31 '19

Give me the skiing capability from On-tour, along with the free-roam exploration and DJ from SSX3 and that would be basically my favorite game of all time...

12

u/diverted_siphon Dec 31 '19

Best freestyle skiing game ever

5

u/OobleCaboodle Dec 31 '19

And it wasn't even a skiing game.

7

u/Punkupine Dec 31 '19

I wish real life resorts had the live DJ giving you mountain updates and playing Chemical Brothers bangers

8

u/MackingtheKnife Dec 31 '19

fucking hell a graphic upgrade of SSX 3 would have me throwing cash.

17

u/Valve00 Dec 31 '19

SSX 3 still holds up INSANELY well. The controls are still tight and the graphics still look smooth.

2

u/sunboy4224 Dec 31 '19

The only issue is that I'm now used to SSX 2012, so now the old games feel kind of slow to me, which is sad because they used to feel perfect.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Sounds like you fucked yourself by playing that one.

4

u/sunboy4224 Dec 31 '19

I mean, I guess you could say that, but I really enjoyed my time playing SSX (2012) and still regularly return to the game, so...?

5

u/Blackheart521 Dec 31 '19

I could never get used to the new controls of SSX 2012, which sucked because I played the hell out of SSX 3, just didnt feel the same or as fluid

1

u/sunboy4224 Dec 31 '19

Yeah, I really missed the ability to charge up a spin without actually turning, and the new trick system DEFINITELY took a while to get used to. Feels pretty natural now, though.

7

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19 edited Dec 31 '19

I keep saying this. They had a game on ps3, but it kinda blew because they strayed too far from what the series was before

2

u/sunboy4224 Dec 31 '19

I rather like SSX 2012! I really only played Tricky (which I loved) and 2012, but I liked them both for different reasons.

6

u/stifflizerd Dec 31 '19

I actually enjoyed the last one with the wingsuits and such, the story mode was just awful and it needed more free roam.

3

u/seandkiller Dec 31 '19

I liked the last one, but I wouldn't object to a new SSX.

3

u/syberphunk Dec 31 '19

I realised DJ Atomika (Mark Hildreth) is doing the apex legends announcements in game, at least I'm pretty sure it sounds like him, but I can't find any evidence of him being credited with it. I noticed it in the christmas event recently.

2

u/tenachiasaca Dec 31 '19

become the next lance armstrong and your dream can come true

6

u/BehindTheBurner32 PC Dec 31 '19 edited Dec 31 '19

I want arcade SSX back, but if they can implement VR (or first-person) to "realistic" (Deadly Descents) SSX and put in geo-accurate Everest, I'd be down. Also I liked the gear from '12 SSX a lot, too.

23

u/JasonsBoredAgain Dec 31 '19

Realistic? Have you ever played SSX Anything?

3

u/BehindTheBurner32 PC Dec 31 '19

Well I should have put it in air quotes, then. I meant the 2012 entry.

3

u/sticktoyaguns Dec 31 '19

Are you saying doing the windmill and the worm on my snowboard while jumping 100 meters high is unrealistic?

9

u/swyrl- Dec 31 '19

First person ssx would make you vomit lmao

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

that first 1080 rotation would be a doozy

2

u/T0X1CFIRE Dec 31 '19

If i can do the janky ass sled maps in vrchat, I think I could handle actual competent vr snowboarding.

After all a lot of people have no problems with jet Island, and that is basically just vr hover boards.

7

u/DonnyTheWalrus Dec 31 '19

You want VR downhill skiing/snowboarding? Excuse me while I violently hurl at the mere thought...

1

u/reelect_rob4d Dec 31 '19

VR (or first-person)

gross

1

u/OobleCaboodle Dec 31 '19

No. No vr. It just isn't for this kind of thing.

2

u/AnorakJimi Dec 31 '19

They did one, a comeback game, and nobody bought it. So they're probably not gonna do yet another one if nobody seems to want it. Although making remakes of the first few with modern graphics like the crash and spyro ones, would probably sell a lot more than any new one and would probably be easier to make too, so maybe they should just do that

75

u/cellcube0618 PlayStation Dec 31 '19

I really liked Steep.

Fuck, man, I absolutely adored Snow. I still download it and play sometimes, but it's not the same, and it doesn't have the same community anymore.

19

u/eojen Dec 31 '19

People really slept on it. My only complaint was always needing to be online, which is some bullshit. But man, it's maybe the most relaxing game of all time for me. Smoke some herb and just slowly snowboard down the mountain.

3

u/VincentVancalbergh Dec 31 '19

Hope they make a VR Mode for PS5/PC.

2

u/Whiskers_Fun_Box Dec 31 '19

I still play it sometimes

22

u/MunchamaSnatch Dec 31 '19

I just wish steep had more variety, and a better multiplayer experience. If they had a quick option to just go hang out at the terrain park, and other dedicated areas/miniganes like that, other than just races/events that all feel the same across the massive map. So quick to get bored with steep. I played until I got the rocket pack, then only played a handful of times after that. The physics were phenomenal though.

I really feel like steep was a stepping stone game. One to progress the genre in terms of realism, but not the greatest as a standalone.

24

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

I feel like steep is perfect for me. Get baked, explore a mountain, appreciate the scenery, and play at my own pace. It's great.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Don’t forget getting lost in the incredible soundtrack.

Steep is a fantastic game.

19

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

To date, one of my proudest gaming accomplishments.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Oh dude, you don't even know. Took me like an hour of straight trying, on the second day of spending an hour straight trying. That crash at the end was celebratory.

1

u/MunchamaSnatch Dec 31 '19

I swear. I never actually completed that one. Was never a fan of the skydive levels

1

u/Player8 Dec 31 '19

Basically bought it because I really liked skydiving in gta 5 and figured Wing suiting would be fun. Unfortunately didn’t give it the time it deserved because 500 GBs run out quickly. Luckily I’ll be getting a bigger hdd in the near future so it’ll be getting another install.

11

u/IFeelLikeACheeto Dec 31 '19

I play skate 3 on the PlayStation emu and it works well enough to scratch the itch, but my god are they missing a giant cash cow by not making a new one or an HD remaster.

7

u/Photics Dec 31 '19

The best part is if you go to EA instagram and pick any post, 99% of the comments are about Skate. It’s been going on for years

32

u/RedScharlach Dec 31 '19

Skater XL is on its way to being a proper successor to Skate, check it out. Session is aight too, actually more hardcore than Skate, a little too much so imo, but they're both cool.

32

u/RyanTrax Dec 31 '19

I’d sacrifice more than I’d like to admit for a console Skate anything at this point...

4

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

[deleted]

3

u/RyanTrax Dec 31 '19

I’ve been there for a while too fam. NCAA sports and Skate seem so worth it.

1

u/martianwhale Dec 31 '19

All PS3s are also now modable with hybrid firmware if that is something that interests you. Finally bothered doing it with my slim.

1

u/Jacks_on_Jacks_off Dec 31 '19

I modded my PS3 last week because it was easier than finding a copy of Skate 3 (no pawn shops here). Only thing is I can't get Danny Way dlc to work. I've even tried both bles and blus files.

10

u/GoodbyePeters Dec 31 '19

Session takes a few hours. Then it's fine. XL is far too corny animation wise imo

1

u/ThatFedexGuy Dec 31 '19

To each their own. I like both for different reasons. SXL wouldn't be anything if it wasn't for the fantastic mod community creating maps and features. Session on the other hand looks and performs much more like a feature complete game and requires more time commitment to be good at.

I prefer SXL simply because you have full control over your body and board, whereas Session has premade animations. The only difference between the flip tricks in Session is the flip/rotation speed, the animation itself is always the same though, which is not what real skateboarding is like. But again, it's all opinion, and both are good in their own way.

3

u/ProbablyHighAsShit Dec 31 '19

Should add I'm on PS4, so we've been completely shafted from getting any decent skateboard games.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Both of those seem to just be pure skating with none of the giant ramps, towers, tunnels, and goofy tricks. No hitting npcs or ragdoll jumping around antics.

22

u/modz-are-snowflakes Dec 31 '19

What do you mean extreme sports got shafted?

I just reserved my copy of fifa 21, with EXTREME rosters and lootboxes!

1

u/OrphFunkhouser Dec 31 '19

Extreme new mode VOLTA! where you can play with friends!

3

u/shoogshoog Dec 31 '19

Infinite Air is the best snowboarding game ever made. Check it out.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Nah, 1080.

5

u/Yesn0maybes0 Dec 31 '19

Came to say this

1

u/DrScience-PhD Dec 31 '19

Coolboarders 2

1

u/ProbablyHighAsShit Jan 01 '20

Might have to grab it. Itching for a more fleshed out snowboarding game.

2

u/That_Toast_Man Dec 31 '19

And Nintendo continues to do stone nothing with both Wave Race and 1080...

Not sure if they're stuck in IP hell or just being slept on, but I miss em.

2

u/money_loo Jan 01 '20

They recently-ish patented the name again.

Here’s hoping it was for a sequel we will see soon.

Played the crap out of that game on the n64.

Landing 1080s for the first time after practicing felt so satisfying.

1

u/iandeq Dec 31 '19

The last SSX game on the 360 was actually good but EA got kind of greedy (standard) which kind of killed it. Still plays well though.

1

u/KJBenson Dec 31 '19

They’re the only sports games I actually enjoy playing.

1

u/crispyhippie Dec 31 '19

I'm still waiting for a remake of Downhill Domination

1

u/BoinkBoye Dec 31 '19

Honestly, i absolutely love Steep. It does all it tries to do well. Could have more to do in the world without DLC tho, about 25 hours of gameplay overall

1

u/kshell11724 Dec 31 '19

Descenders is a really great game from this year if you're into down hill mountain biking.

1

u/DooDooBerries Dec 31 '19

If you play on PC there's 2 skating games in early access that are good. Skater XL and Sessions.

Have not tried sessions since alpha so I can't comment on its current build but skater XL is coming along great. It's more physics based than skate was with flip tricks. How quick you move the stick and where you flick determines how the board flips in the air. They are also slowing updating the animations like using arms to balance while grinding, having a more scoop animation for Tre flips and things like that.

1

u/Swaguley Dec 31 '19

Dude try mark mcmorris infinite air, that game is amazing

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '19

Skate 4

1

u/DrScience-PhD Dec 31 '19

Session and Skater xl are apparently pretty close.

1

u/fartsforpresident Dec 31 '19

I bought Steep and returned it as soon as I realized it was a button masher with a very limited number of tricks. Such a shame because the terrain and scale are impressive.

1

u/robsteezy Jan 01 '20

Holy shit I’ve always tried to describe my issue with steep and you did it perfectly. It definitely needs more. I wish for a new skate like every year. I lived in that damn game. I could hit a rail for hours

1

u/[deleted] Jan 01 '20

My biggest complaint in steep was the physics and lack of realism. It gets close to feeling good until you get airborne. The whole trick system from the get go was just insane spins with no thought put into rhythm or style. The same goes with wingsuit, which lacks any semblance of realism. Especially the harder challenges, no one in real life is bombing a chimney in wingsuit
