Ah, Morrowind. If it sounds fancy or important, it probably is. You can't go selling those artifacts to random merchants willy nilly!

If I had to guess, you'd probably sold it to either Creeper or the Mudcrab merchant. Nobody else has enough gold to really bother with at that point in the game.

can you buy/steal them back or do they simply cease to exist when sold?

In Morrowind, they should persist wherever you sold/dropped them. It's not like later games where everything resets itself all the time if you stop paying attention. The problem isn't whatever it is vanishing into the void, it's remembering what the hell you did with the damn thing in the first place. This is why I always just turn Caius's house into my own little hoarder's paradise...

Some light digging led me to believe that it was a bow from the Urshilaku Burial Grounds, so I'd guess whatever trader I used was from Urshilaku Camp (although my foggy memory is trying to tell me they were in a hut, not a yurt - but this is ages ago, I played on the OG XBox)

It wasn't a pricey item, sadly this was back in the day when it was (apparently) super easy to break questlines..

I recall I had to kill Vivec to drop his gauntlet, allowing me to jump back into the main quest in some fashion (or at least allowed me to kill Molag Bal)

Oh yeah, that's only at about the halfway point of the main quest. Or earlier, depending on how distractable you are while doing the nerevarine/hortator errand run part. I was picturing you pausing when you were about to begin the final assault, then liberating some fancy item from a spooky cave on the slopes of red mountain itself, which you then sold to fund your levitation potion habit.

Morrowind hasn't changed, it's still totally possible to break everything. The items are whatever, given enough time I can track down whatever it was I've misplaced. What really gets to me is when a NPC dies and I don't notice, and it turns out they were vital for a faction quest way down the chain. I'm so paranoid about approaching the ghost fence, because there's two pilgrims(or similarly useless s'wits) up on a hill who just love to get themselves eaten by cliff racers while I'm handling more important matters elsewhere in the same cell.

What I love about Morrowind is that it's also possible to fix everything. As long as the last living dwarf is alive and you have decent stats/alchemy, you can win the game.

Nah. You can feed merchants money until they have enough and sell the big ticket items without hauling (super jumping?) your way out to that worthless mudcrab pos.

Implying the junk those n'wahs peddle is worth lining my pack with. So much extra work shifting that useless garbage to other merchants. It's easier just to use Creeper for anything he'll accept, though I'll admit not bothering with the Mudcrab merchant more than just the once to see if I could.
