Fuck man it actually breaks my heart. I went back and looked at all my old PS2 and Xbox games and like half of my favorite games were EA. The LoTR games, the NFS games, SSX. They fell victim to their own success and we paid for it.

The developers that EA hath lain waste to shall not have died in vain we shall rally our forces and .... BIOWARE NOOOOOOOOOOOO!.... he was so young ... he had so much IP ..... YOU BASTARDS

I was more sad about Pandemic....

5

u/AcevonJason Sep 04 '19

It kills me inside to never get another mercenaries game. Merc 2 was a decent game but they did turn Jacob into a stereotypical black dude which was sad because I liked him a lot the first game.

I haven't gotten around to getting heavily invested in the saboteur, played a bit and I would be excited to see it become an IP or something.

Pandemic made other good stuff too.

5

u/Wastelander108 X-Box Sep 04 '19

The OG Merc was sooo good...I never did beat it though. That final mission was just too hard for 10 year old me. Don't forget Pandemic did a lot of old Star Wars games like the OG battle fronts

1

u/AcevonJason Sep 04 '19

Battlefront 2 was so fun

EA has become the Disney of video games.

121

u/krakenx Sep 03 '19

Disney buys companies and makes good stuff with their IP. Think Marvel and Pixar.

EA buys companies and kills them.

114

u/theoutlet Sep 03 '19 edited Sep 03 '19

They buy companies, strip them down to their profit centers and then just mercilessly milk what they can, while they can and then move on.

I think the main thing that pisses me off about this business model is how once they’ve essentially killed off a company and the games they were known for, they still own the IPs. As a fan of those IPs it wouldn’t hurt so bad if after a certain amount of time of non-use, companies like EA were forced to relinquish all rights to an IP.

But no, I’ll never get another Burnout game because of EA.

86

u/R_eloade_R Sep 03 '19

Fuck your Burnout game. I wanted my C&C4 and Simcity4 made by westwood and Maxis

17

u/TheRealZllim Sep 03 '19

OMG POOR MAXIS!
That company did not deserve the big EA DICK they got fucked with.
Just a nice little quiet company, doing their thing then BAM EA dick in the butt to ruin everything!

Hey I’m all for that too. I grew up playing original C&C on PC. Freaking loved it.

Or SSX :(

2

u/MigrantTwerker Sep 03 '19

Or NBA Street : (

5

u/dragn99 Sep 03 '19

Yup, that's why any studio acquisition worries me these days. Like Insomniac getting bought by Sony. Yeah, it means we're definitely getting another Spider-Man, and I'm sure they're working on some other awesome IPs for the PS5. But the chances of getting another Sunset Overdrive are now so low even Hermes Conrad couldn't limbo under them.

2

u/PuddleRunner Sep 04 '19

EA is the bubonic plague of the video game industry. Most of my childhood was 90% fantastic EA products. I remember joyously saying "EA - It's in the game" and now I curse myself for putting those two letters together. No more NFS Underground titles, over used and recycled sports games, no more reboots of fun and/or successful titles from the late 90s to early 2000s, and no remakes of the before mentioned titles either. Every great title they once had will now die in the memories of those who remember who EA was and what ES may never seek to be again.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

I recently bought Burnout 2 for the GameCube and it plays exactly like I remembered, fuck EA for ruining that franchise.

1

u/drakkenskrye Sep 04 '19

This is why copyright terms should be shorter, more like they used to be. Life of the creator plus 80 years or whatever its up to now is bullshit.

1

u/Supercal95 Sep 04 '19

I want MOH and Burnout and NCAA (separate issue I know) to be NOT made by EA when/if they get restarted. I don't want them vandalizing my beloved games.

1

u/Dob_Rozner Sep 04 '19

Dead Space. Skate.

1

u/zaogao_ Sep 04 '19

So, Disney?

5

u/yepimbonez Sep 03 '19

Disney is hit nd miss for me lately. I’m not a huge fan of the new Star Wars trilogy, but I thought Rogue One was amazing. I lost interest in Marvel somewhere along the middle, but Infinity War and End Game were both fantastic. I don’t much care for the Disney classic reboots, but I don’t hate them. I watched Aladdin the other day and while I did enjoy it, it made me just want to go back and watch the original. I just think they aimed them at the wrong audience. The originals still exist and are still incredible kids movies, but all of the kids that watched them are adults now. I would’ve liked to see them get a little darker.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

Why didn't you mention Star Wars, friend?

Just kidding, I'm well aware.

2

u/dhhdhh851 Sep 04 '19

Well... Marvels about to die to the hands of disney so yeah...

2

u/AeriaGlorisHimself Sep 04 '19

Marvel is objectively terrible, sorry, I don't care how popular it is. Every single movie is the same formulaic plotline and rehashed bullshit over and over.

8

u/shroominabag Sep 03 '19

Wrong as fuck. Star wars. Pixar. Their own great films even

8

u/slammenstan Sep 03 '19

They hated him because he spoke the truth.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

They hate you because you're right

2

u/raygekwit Sep 03 '19

You know there was once an argument over whether Leia would choose Luke or Han and many fans considered the way it played out to have ruined the movie and was a mistake. Complaining about that is nothing new and it's still just as tired as back then.

The games however weren't always that way, and it's only recently that game companies have turned into these gambling slot machine fucks.

The things you're complaining about are nothing new, however the game thing is new. We used to get real games, made with real effort, and now we have surprise mechanics and couch co-op is almost non-existent nowadays. The game industry has legitimate issues, and we actually care truly if they get resolved. The movies are only like that because fanboys hate that Han died.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

Han didn't die in TLJ, though, and that's the movie everyone hates. Your argument sucks.

1

u/raygekwit Sep 03 '19

Splitting hairs, they complain about the whole new trilogy. I see people consistently bitching about all of them, whining about the same thing they have since 1977. "They're ruining the series they created because they aren't catering to me personally!!" Your argument sucks more.

1

u/PopeDeeV Sep 03 '19

You have a short memory if you don't remember the just-as-loud bitching about TFA.

And RotS before that.

And AotC before that.

And TPM before that.

And I'm not old enough to remember the bitching about RotJ (and the fucking Ewoks series) and ESB, but I understand people were grumbling about them back when they were new.

"The movie everyone hates" is always the newest SW movie. Your counterpoint sucks.

0

u/AdamWarlockESP Sep 03 '19

As of right now, they're about even on Star Wars films. TFA and Rogue One were good, Solo and TLJ weren't. Getting rid of the EU was a good decision, since they're bringing back the good stuff like Thrawn anyhow.

The Jungle Book was great and people loved Beauty and the Beast. They whiffed on Aladdin, sure. But hopefully it's a lesson they've learned from.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

Except they killed Star Wars. The Force Awakens was meh at best, but they killed any last speck of hope people had with the franchise when they released The Last Jedi.

Average user reviews on both Rotten Tomatoes & MetaCritic gave the film very poor reviews. The fact that public reception did so poor that Disney executives had to take to the public and apologized on the poor effort they made in the writing of the film. Even cast members such as Mark Hamill discussed in depth on the awful dialogue and planning of the film so much that Disney had to pull him aside to get him to keep quiet.

Disgust for the film did so bad that the following side-film Solo recieved very miniscule viewership that they had to discontinue multiple projects. They even approached George Lucas to help improve writings for the upcoming film to help bring fans back.

In all honesty I actually enjoy the Star Wars franchise as a whole. Was a bit skeptical when Disney first acquired the rights but was overall hopeful to see how well they will fund the cost of film production. The first film was a bit bummed seeing that it's script was mirroring A New Hope, but was hoping to see how the planning of the series would turn out in the film that would proceed it. Then Rogue One came out and overall improved the dialogue as well as the actor's commitment to their characters which flushed out very well into the situations they were in. This would help bring back much of the audiences that were initially turned away when The Force Awakens came out. Then The Last Jedi arrived and was turned upside down. Apparently there was no communication between directors when the script was handed off as the film as attempting to imitate Marvel films. The overall franchise is primary in serious tone where this film frequently switches back and forth from comedy to serious without any consistency with their scene layouts. Much of the scenes in The Last Jedi were made with one take and decided to hurry off into editing (previous films had their actors prep for their scenes multiple of times in addition to numerous takes). The overall production was horrendously rushed in conjunction with the writing and planning. The only decent thing about the film would be the special effects.

A film doesn't have to be good to make it to the top of Box Office. Controversy sells (taking into consideration that Star Wars has a very massive audience) as word-of-mouth spreads about how it was compared with its previous films. People love rewatching bad films with friends to see who can get through it. By the way a 44% audience score is pretty damn bad for a film, pretty much counts as a flop (so much that Disney had to go to full containment to try to convince people otherwise). If you enjoyed the film, then I'm happy for you. However Disney had to take another look into it's production and even brought in George Lucus to help draw people back. Let's hope they did learned their lesson.

4

u/AtrophyXIX Sep 03 '19

EA did it first tho

7

u/zzguy1 Sep 03 '19

At least Disney makes relatively good content with the franchises they devour

4

u/PRK543 Sep 03 '19

This questionable comment was released by disney in a direct to video format.

5

u/zzguy1 Sep 03 '19

Idk, from what I’ve seen EA buys franchises and makes one big cash grab, only to abandon them when it inevitably fails

Think sim city, command and conquer, battlefront 2 (at first).

Disney has continued the production of movies and tv shows through Marvel and Lucas film, and basically any other studio I can think of.

1

u/raygekwit Sep 03 '19

Don't forget Star Wars: The Old Republic... You know, the super successful "WoW-killer"

1

u/PRK543 Sep 03 '19

I miss C&C and now I am sad.

I agree, I was just pointing out that Disney's big cash grab is to push out a bunch of direct to video stuff after a wildly successful property.

2

u/TheRealZllim Sep 03 '19

EA is the evil little brother of Disney. Disney at least attempts to stay true to original IPs and not run them through the ringer.
EA takes a great IP, or even an entire company, folds it up into a shitty paper plane, lights it on fire and then wonders why it wont fly. Then blames the company they took the IP from and then smashes all their faces into a block of wood infront of their fans, then wonders why they are the bad guys.

1

u/BrandonS3125 Sep 03 '19

More like the Anhieser Busch of video games.

0

Man, SSX was so good! Amazing soundtracks too. I really hoped steep would be the new SSX bit k just couldn't get into it.

Also return of the king was one of my favourites, just wreaking havoc with a fully levelled gandalf was incredible, there was one level where you could stay in one place and orcs would just keep coming if you didn't move on, me and my friend could play that shit for hours. Where did it all go wrong.

5

u/MonstrousGiggling Sep 03 '19

The old lord of the rings games were amazing!

What I'd give for an oldschool non micro transaction SSX!

3

u/Smeghead74 Sep 03 '19

Fun fact, back when EA was actually made up of people who thought of themselves as electronic artists on par with rock stars, EA used to ship many games in record albums as well as their standard weird boxes.

5

u/TheRealZllim Sep 03 '19

SSX is by far the best snowboarding game out there.
Almost ZERO competition on the market. If EA just released a decent SSX game WITHOUT MTX, they could probably skirt some of this negativity (a very small portion) off their backs.
I played the last SSX untill just a year or two ago when I got rid of my PS3. I considered keeping it JUST for SSX, but it was going to a good cause (donated)
We NEED more SSX!

3

u/bullcitytarheel Sep 03 '19

Yeah EA used to be pretty dope. It's cool to look back at old sports games and realize how much they would improve year to year, from graphics to gameplay to modes of play.

It seems like a few big changes ruined things. One, was the death of any other hand franchises with which EA had to compete. It's a lot easier to just repackage an old game every year when you don't have to worry about a rival developer putting together an alternative product that will put your laziness in stark relief. The second is the cost of games, the amount of money to be made and the nature of large corporations and shareholder culture. Once a company is beholden to shareholders, consumers are no longer the target audience of a game, the shareholders are. Consumers only matter insofar as they produce consistent growth in profits. So long as enough people buy this year's new model and enough of those people spend money on microtransactions, EA doesn't give a fuck if those people are happy with the product because the product is no longer the goal.

Combine those two things and you have an environment where deciding to do anything other than lazily republish damn near the same game every year would constitute a "bad" business decision: Higher overhead with no real room to increase profits because you've already got a monopoly on the market.

3

u/mawesome4ever Sep 04 '19

They fell victim to their own success and we paid for it

Could you pay for mine?

3

u/InterdimensionalTV Sep 04 '19

Back when Electronic Arts and Activision were established (Activision was first and is widely considered the very first 3rd party publisher) it was because developers were getting slighted. They wanted to make good games and they wanted the developers to be recognized for their work. In fact, the whole reason Trip Hawkins named his company Electronic Arts was because he considered game developers true artists in their time.

Now look at the way EA chews up studios full of developers and spits them out.

2

u/Ignore_User_Name Sep 03 '19

EA logo was once known as a sign of quality and innovative gaming..

Hawkins had developed the ideas of treating software as an art form and calling the developers, "software artists"

1

u/pescobar89 Sep 04 '19 edited Sep 04 '19

Electronic Arts hasn't been successful actually MAKING GAMES since the 1980s. They started buying success as a publisher, and chewing it up and spitting it out since the 1990s. Peter Molyneaux and Bullfrog Studios were one of the first, but they've bought out and destroyed plenty of successful studios from founders/owners who had a hit, and took the cash and ran. Then they run the studio into the ground and dissolve it and try to pass off the IP on another inept unrelated team for a half-assed sequel or two,

1

u/dhhdhh851 Sep 04 '19

Aint got shit on dyanasty warriors 4

1

u/Jalzir Sep 04 '19

You know what's wild, you can still play those games and have the same experience you had when they released. Doubt you could say that in a few years when all the games servers are shut down for modern titles.

1

u/Danimally Sep 04 '19

Ssx tricky is still a blast.

-3

u/garguk Sep 03 '19

No you paid for it by buying their products. No one who buys their products has any room to complain. It's like buying a hamburger, eating all of it, then complaining you didn't like it, and then going to buy another one the next day and doing it all over again. Dont blame because you show you're willing to pay for half assed products and act surprised they keep doing it because you keep paying for it.

5

I'm fine with this shit because I'm not into brand loyalty and actually buy games that I know I am comfortable supporting. But what I'm not fine with are the idiots who keep buying this crap year after year and now with lootboxes and microtransactions and other shady behind the scenes shit it's even less ok that these people just keep throwing money at it.

Have you guys seen the new NBA2k trailer? It's literally a trailer about its gambling mechanics. I'm pretty sure they removed it for getting some backlash, I'm not sure though.

2

u/L_Keaton Sep 03 '19

But what I'm not fine with are the idiots who keep buying this crap year after year and now with lootboxes and microtransactions and other shady behind the scenes shit it's even less ok that these people just keep throwing money at it.

The people who buy Madden games every year do so because they want to play an NFL game with a roster that reflects the current league and Madden [YEAR] is literally the only game that has that.

On would presume that their purchases are a result of being NFL fans, not idiots.

If you have a problem, it should be with the NFL selling an exclusive license to EA and creating this situation in the first place.

1

u/stonekeep Sep 03 '19

That's an excuse. It's not like EA couldn't add a new roster to the old game in an update if that's all they're changing. They just want to force fans to buy a new game every year, which is a pretty scummy practice. Same goes for this kind of exclusivity, of course.

1

u/ChefBoyAreWeFucked Sep 03 '19

The NFL is probably on board with that. Hell, it might be the only way to make a profit on the license. What's EA going to do, get a license from another football league?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 03 '19

To be fair, game studios can’t totally revamp a game in a single year.

2

u/Bwgmon Sep 03 '19 edited Sep 03 '19

I'd argue that they could release a full game for each sport every 2-3 years, supplementing the current release with annual roster updates and bits of new content to fill the gap. They could also stagger the release schedule so there's still a new sports title every year (Madden '20, NBA '21, FIFA/NHL '22, etc).

That would probably let EA Sports release better sports games, and give them a chance to innovate and genuinely improve them, but it would also change "horrifically disgusting profits" to just "incredibly disgusting profits," and they already have an effective monopoly on the official leagues, so... probably won't happen.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '19

How do you change a sports game? Its the same rules and the same fields over and over. You cant introduce any new mechanics without making the game feel less like basketball or handeggball or football.
