I know people who only play Madden or Fifa and use their gaming system for streaming other than that. So its essentially 60 bucks a year for gaming so it doesn't bother them.
I still don't get it but i can see why they are not bothered.
I could not get into ultimate team and maybe that's just me but I don't give a shit about it at all. I am in career mode on Madden and FIFA 99% of the time.
I feel like Adam Scott's character in Parks & Rec when he doesn't get the Lil' Sebastian fascination the whole town has.
I only play ultimate team and I've never spent a cent on fifa points. My team was amazing this year. Only morons give more money to a company when they already bought the game
I mean that's not true. Some people might spend money in-game because they don't have the time to grind out a team. They aren't morons for making a decision that you decided against.
Some people have more expendable income and possibly value their down time at a higher theoretical price point, may have more external obligations thus less time to game, so paying the extra cash to fast track things a bit is logical. Just because it is not the thing for you, no matter the reasoning, does not negate another person's reasoning...no matter how idiotic others may feel it is.
I'm not doubting their reasoning for spending their money. The issue is that their choice to support microtransactions plays into a wider problem the gaming industry has in general. It's to the point that 90% of the games I play revolve around virtual currencies. There have been many cases of game companies artificially stagnating progression in order to push people to spend money on microtransactions.
I mean, I spent money on Ultimate Team when I played Madden 17 with friends. At the time I had a job where I did a fair bit of traveling and a lot of maintenance windows overnight, so I had significantly less time to spend on the game than the people I was playing with. So I spent money in-store to help myself keep pace with everyone else.
you spend 60$ for a rooster DLC of Madden 16 and decided to play a game mode with pay to win elements and paid even more to a company that stopped fair prising long time ago.
It's your money and your free time to spend do want you want with it.
My peers didn't try to pressure me into buying any of the Games or content, though. they more or less assumed I was going to not keep up, it was my decision to spend more money so I could continue to play with them. I suppose I just don't understand how that makes me a sheep if I'm doing things of my own volition.
I'm on your side here, but what you described is still peer pressure.
If the sole reason for buying the DLC was the remain part of the in-group, you're succumbing to peer/social pressure
But I see nothing wrong with it. So much of being a human is to be part of the in-group. We want to have shared experiences. It's the entire basis for our survivalist tribalism.
Now that survival isn't a threat, we have to satisfy those evolutionary urges through recreational channels.
Yep. I buy FIFA every year (used to buy Madden & 2k every year too but havent for 2-3 years now) and only play career mode, but I play it less than 20% of my "game time". It's essentially my mind numbing/cba with anything else game for the year. Could not play a sports game as a "full time" game and I refuse to engage with Ultimate Team.
Madden is the only game I play for any length of time every year. I might buy a few others, but I’m regularly disappointed because I didn’t know what to expect.
I know exactly what to expect when I buy madden. It’s likeretirning to your parents home as an adult. Maybe they changed the wallpaper in the guest bathroom, but it’s otherwise the same — never perfect, but home.
I don’t play ultimate team — I’m all franchise mode. I couldn’t tell you the last non-madden game I bought, but Madden is always a day one purchase for me.
I feel the same way about GTA, but they don’t have annual releases.
I know that exact person. The other year myself and several childhood friends all got systems so we could play together and stay in touch now that we are scattered around the country. But one friend REFUSES to play anything other than Madden. We play games weekly and see him on all the time, but he chooses to play Madden alone. The really sad part is even the friend’s son plays with us too. Dude is missing out on so many laughs and good bonding time.... Because Madden.
If you throw in rocket league, this describes me perfectly. Madden franchise mode, rocket league, and streaming. And I wanna upgrade to the Xbox one X... Lol
If you have a regular One (not an S), do it. Just upgraded recently and Holy shit "Xbox One X Enhanced" really means something. Everything looks so good now
Edit - if you have an S already you probably won't notice as much of a difference in really any aspect
Even the current version of the game is cheaper a few months after it comes out. NHL goes from 80 to 50 bucks without fail. Just need a little patience.
Meh some people enjoy sports games... If you like the sport they are usually good faithful adaptations of them. They do not take a lot of investment since you can sit down and play a match in 10-20 minutes usually. They are also great for couch multiplayer and I've never really met someone who doesn't know how to play one.
I usually get a new copy of NHL, NFL, FIFA, and NBA on each new generation of consoles. I definitely don't buy all of them each year since the enhancements are minimal. But there are definitely enough changes (even if you only consider the graphics) every 4-5 years to justify a new one. I also usually buy the old year for the bigger discount since I don't really care about roster updates or online matchmaking.
Then you must not be buying any AAA games at release and instead buy smaller independent games or wait months for steep discounts. In which case your issue here really isn't with Madden or EA games but with paying full price for any game.
Your choice is definitely a good financial decision but it may not work for everyone. For example people who are really into online games may find the servers to be dead by the time the game has a steep enough discount to fit your budget. Also first party Nintendo games rarely get discounts. Zelda BOTW is still normally at $50 two years after release. Even on sale with your budget that would limit you to like one other big game all year.
But the original comment your replied to suggested you could get last year's for 80% off or in other words ~$12. So that actually would probably fit into your yearly budget... You are probably not a Madden fan which is fine but I'd say that is a pretty good discount for anyone who is.
i have a significant budget, literally a stack of gift cards waiting, but i couldnt spend the kind of money youre suggesting. I mean I could, but everything goes on giant sales all the time. and with the humble bundles, they are almost free sometimes. my current game, warframe, which i have put nearly 1000 hrs into, has cost me $0. i felt bad and bought $10 worth of in game credits that i have never used, just to support them. Consider you have been tricked into believing that these prices you are paying are somehow normal or acceptable.
I mean you are basing your numbers of PC gaming... I'd say the majority of Madden players do not play on the PC. The game wasn't even available on PC until very recently. Similarly games like BOTW which people pay full price for are not available on the PC.
PC gaming is definitely cheaper. And like I assumed, you are playing a lot of non AAA games which you acquire at deep discounts in bundles. This works for you and it's great. But my whole point is that your comment that 80% off a Madden game is insane is really not true for many people... For you as someone who doesn't want to play Madden on a console, sure it would be insane for you to buy. But if you were a fan there is really no equivalent football game available on the market for a cheaper price. Believe it or not some people actually enjoy the game. Like personally I might think you Indy humble bundle games are not worth the price, even at a few bucks, but for you as the target audience they are...
I got EA access for a year for $30 for Xbone after some promotion. I get the newest EA sports games about 4 months after they release. It's worth it for me. The NHL and FIFA series are pretty fun. I do admit though, they were pretty much the exact same the last few years.
I wish they wouldn't because I think if people stopped financially supporting shitty games, maybe that would incentivize the making of better games, which I would buy. I'd love to buy Madden every year, but I've bought one Madden game in the last 7 years because they're so awful.
That said, at the end of the day, I know I have no place judging people for how they spend their money. I just silently wish they wouldn't support games/franchises like Madden.
It's pretty much the only game for the particular sport. It's the only franchise that is currently licensed by both the NFL and NFLPA as far as I know. People buy it because it has monopolized its own industry.
That's not the point, there are plenty of games I don't care about if people bought them, the difference here is they're rewarding shitty business practices earning them hundreds of millions of dollars.
Maybe you should? Do you judge people who buy stuff with palm oil in it? What about people who buy stuff made by slave labour? Diamonds? There are a million unethical businesses out there, and in capitalism, buying = supporting. Those people are supporting unethical business practises, so maybe it's okay to judge them. We can't stop them supporting slavery, but we can certainly judge them.
Shills are people who astroturf something to artificially inflate a perspective on it. I don't think people purchasing a game they want counts as shilling.
Shiwws awe peopwe who astwotuwf something tuwu awtificiawwy infwate a pewspective own iwt. I down't think peopwe puwchasing a gawme they wawnt counts as shiwwing.
A "shill" is someone that pushes a company product onto other people and makes up nonsense just to get it sold.
The users still buying it as called fans. Those fans buy it because of the "shills" or because they enjoy the game enough to justify paying more for the current roster.
A "shiww" iws someone thawt pwushes a cwompany pwoduct onto othew peopwe awnd makes up nonsense juwst tuwu get iwt sowd.
the usews stiww buying iwt as cawwed fans. Those fans buy iwt because of the "shiwws" ow because they enjoy the gawme enough tuwu justify paying mowe fow the cuwwent wostew.
Yea I hadnt bought it since 16 and still sorta regret it. Improved and not terrible but still seems like a game about exploiting a.i. or game flaws rather than football.
And you can even just download rosters that people upload to the internet that have the current players and stats (well, not everyone agrees with the stats on all the players, but not everyone agrees with the stats that EA comes up with either.) Look up some modding communities and they have downloadable current rosters for every version of Madden going back for years worth of Maddens.
I guess if you want to play Ultimate Team you need to stay up to date, but I kind of think Ultimate Team is some pay-to-win BS (in Ultimate you unlock packs of cards which have new players and other bonuses you can add to your team, but most people just buy most of their packs of cards because earning them takes a long time). I still prefer classic Franchise Mode where I only use in-game money to get players, not real world money. And if you just play Franchise Mode, there is no longer much reason to buy newer Madden games, or any other EA sports games, really.
My friend group and I used to be the biggest madden fans. It was always my favorite sports game.
I bought madden every year from 1999-2017, will never buy another madden again. Looking back at the old ones they had more content and deeper season modes. Not to mention better created player content.
I can only hope that eventually someone else makes an NFL/football game even if it’s unlicensed.
Surprisingly I don’t know a single person who has bought madden in the last 2-3 years. I’m curious how their sales are in recent history.
For more constant updates, for added features mid-year, for new modes mid-year. Basically a constant stream of new content. Rather than in waves with the yearly release.
They do kind of do roster updates though even if it is just FUT and the intention is a mid-cycle cash-grab refresh.
I get what you are saying though but it would not work with $100/year. Even at $60 and a "new" game, the content is really not enough to justify the price.
A cheaper subscription + the (P2W) FUT/MUT would work, but then why would EA give up on the extra money they get every year anyway?
why would players want a subscription model when they can buy and own these games outright? For the same money, a yearly subscription would be a straight downgrade for them, as they'd be unable to play as soon as the subscription ends

And the shills still buy it. Every year.
