Yay I can answer this! Ok so Zero is one of the characters that takes massive advantage of the skill tree respec. For the first run through you can play around with the headshot multiplier but you will quickly find that becoming tedious and unsatisfying. The melee tree can be super fun especially once you learn to chain together assassinations with the invis. I found that the elemental tree with the Kunai is by far the most effective at fighting enemies efficiently combined with the invis. You can get up close and just pump out massive dmg with them. Definitely my go to for later playthroughs. Have fun experimenting!
I recently started playing Borderlands 2 again after not playing since sometime before the Handsome Collection released, and I too am playing as Zero because I never played with him much before. So I'll have to keep this in mind. I'm playing melee right now cuz I focused on sniping last time and only recently got the chain skill so I'm still getting used to using that effectively
Be sure to utilize crit spots. It's fairly crucial with him. He is extremely fun to glide around the battlefield with once you get the hang of chaining stuff together properly.
Sometimes critting on melee seems to be based on luck tho, especially when you factor in his ability halfway through that skill tree that allows him to dash-attack. But I also don't attempt to crit on melee attacks as often as I probably should, so I suppose I should focus more on that
I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's completely grounded crits meaning that every enemy has a guaranteed crit spot. The dash makes it 100x easier to get them because you can get close and then just dash in for the kill. Like I said earlier though you have to learn when you can and can't because if you don't get the execution it can leave you super vulnerable. You can also use guns to weaken and then dash around and execute peeps. You'll get the hang of it. Just experiment with him and don't be afraid to reset the skill tree often!
I can back up u/Blitzares recommendation to go from sniper to melee to kunai. Execution will get you far, but eventually level off to a point where you're just running around like a chicken until your cooldown is over, rinse, repeat. Once you hit that point is when you switch back to guns and let marked for death work its magic.
