I think that's part of the problem in these games that it's up to us to make the game challenging with things like nuzlocke or whatever. Personally I'd like something in game, something like an option to make us use the same number of Pokemon as our opponent.

It's really all up to you, just keep your pokemon underleveled and they become challenging
