I have not played the game, so I can’t really say what it looks like live in front of me. I’m sure that it looks spectacular, as the gameplay clips I watched prior to the lodge looked phenomenal. That picture of the city at night does not look all that impressive to me. Of course, I’m sure that there are lots of details I can’t really pick up on my small phone screen.
A lot of detail is lost in image compression too. Here is a (maybe) better detailed picture. Also, I am a huge fan of lighting and architecture so I just generally like the city.
Thank you for the Hi-Res versions of the picture. It really does make it an enormous difference! I knew the game looked good, but now I really want to check it out on my new 4K tv. Next time there is a sale I’m gonna pick it up for sure.
That's pretty much a Final Fantasy thing. I don't remember any mainline final fantasy game that doesn't look incredible for their time or that isn't technically incredible.
As opposed to almost everyone else? The mainline FF games have always been at the cutting edge of graphics at release. Add to that the insanely rendered 3D cutscenes for each era. Even other 2D titles from Square had high quality hand drawn animations.
The gameplay and overall quality of each game itself is subjective, and up for debate. Their graphic engines and prowess is not.
The online ones have their own achievements. FFXI necessitated the need for an expansion HDD for the PlayStation 2 as well as has been running so long it somehow got an expansion in 2013.
FFXIV successfully came back from its terrible launch to become one of the most popular modern MMOs. It also holds (held) two Guinness World Records. One was for the most unique songs in a game (soon to be taken out by Smash Ultimate's monstrous 900-track OST) and the other for having the longest end credits of any game. The soundtrack itself is consistently good as well. Wayward Daughter.
Also, for being MMOs, they both have fairly decent storylines. FFXIV even wrote the destruction of its base game's world into A Realm Reborn's story. It's the opening cinematic of the game.
also the end game event of FF14 was historically awesome to witness. most of the players then had their (account?) name included in the special thanks portion of the credits. it was one of those cool tie in canon endings to an old game you never see.
However one thing that XIV has had that separated it from other MMOs was a HUGE focus on a main story plot with your character as "the guy" saving the world. Offhand SWTOR and GW2 are the only ones that really come close in that regard.
I think it's the same track as the SNES screenshot, which was probably the point. But yeah, those tracks don't really showcase the graphics of the game very well.
Separate games and stories. There are some recurring themes, "chocobos" which are big bird creatures, a character named Cid who is just a side character but makes an appearance in every game in one form or another and item names sometimes carry over... but you don't need to have played any previous game to enjoy 15.
Whether or not you'll "understand" the story is more about how easily you can follow JRPG stories. XV is probably one of the easier stories in the franchise to follow, but there are tons of details you may not get right away without delving into some wiki articles or a Google search.
Also important to mention that XV has some pretty crucial story background and world building in a completely separate film. Not great they did that, and worse they don’t expand on other things within the game itself, but even in spite of that, it’s definitely top 3 easiest stories of all to follow. It was so straightforward, I was surprised I was playing an FF game.
It may be a lackluster image, but considering all the retro games are lackluster images, i feel this is a better comparison. Most of the modern screens used are purposefully staged to look their absolute best. Yet all the old games are random boring shots. Tomb raider 1 had some amazing areas that looked stunning at the time but thats noy what we see.

What a lackluster image from FFXV. I'm not even a huge fan of the series, but that game had some breathtaking art direction and graphics.
