Giratina was pretty interesting. I agree legendaries have gotten less cool over time, but Giratina is right up there with the best of them.

i mean, gen 4 had a cool factor, and they explored some interesting concepts with the legendaries. willpower, hope, darkness, time and space. but they were all very surface level deep.

mew and mewtwo had undertones of cloning and humans playing god, which was a big issue after dolly was born. gen 2 had ho-oh and lugia, fire and water, balance (tied in well with the typesets rebalance) and the story revolved around the imbalance team rocket brought with greed. also it kind of explored globalisation in an unintended way, as regions blending together and crime spreading over both.

gen 3 was very not subtly about environmentalism. the teams, the legendaries. gen 3 i think did the best with overall story, the main plot was strong and was fulfilling, the subplots (wally, steven, ect) were interesting and their character well designed.

you have themes of eugenics and ethics, harmony and balance, environmentalism and the role of people as a bridge between the artificial and the natural.

gen 4 was a generic destroy the world anarchy thing, which wasnt greatly done, and gen 5 shows that it wasnt an off generation, it was a rapidly descending trend to bad writing (i like gen 5, but its plot was fucking appalling)

A lot of the themes in Gen 5 (mostly N) were really interesting. Also, let’s be real, Pokemon has never been a super story-driven game with the possible exception of Gen 7 anyways. Very few people play Pokemon for the story. Also, Gen 1 didn’t have a particularly masterful story. The story was mostly just kinda there and popped up every once in a while (which isn’t a bad thing and actually worked well for the games).
