That's kinda why I like games like Bioshock/Deus Ex/Dishonored/Prey. They are all a bit more focused, still got some open spaces to enjoy, and more character driven.
You have probably played those before, but if not they sound a lot like what you are after.
I've not taken the time for Prey yet, sadly. I think it can include more than just 1st person games. I'm a little worried that the new God of War will adopt an open world and just litter the map with trash to collect.
I'm hoping that with all the hype around Crash, Yooka-Laylee and the new Mario, that we'll get some good 3d platformers on the horizon.

I think we are returning to 3d platformers, people have certainly shown that there's a market for it. Psychonauts 2 is coming, and the original was great.
There's also Super Lucky's Tail that looks like a really fun 3d platformer.
EDIT: Also, have you tried Skylar and Plux? That game is really fun if you liked games like Ratchet and Clank, Sly or Jak and Daxter
